SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE OF

1. Location : Puri district is one of the centrally located districts in Odisha. It lies between 85o 9’ to 86 o25’ East longitude and between 19 o28’ to 20 o10’ North latitude. It is bounded by the Khurdha district in north, in south, district in the east and district in the west.

2. Climate : The climatic condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April to May and cold during December to January The monsoon generally breaks during the month of June, Annual rainfall of the district was 1051.8 m.m. during the year 2011 which is lower than the normal rainfall 1408.8 m.m.).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 3479.0 sq.kms and 16.99 lakhs of population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 2.23 percent of the states territory and shares 4.05 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 488 per sq. kms. As against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 1715 villages (including 124 un-inhabited villages) covering 11 blocks. 11 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 325133.( 19.1% ) and schedule tribe population 6129 ( 0.4% ). The literacy percentage of the district covers 84.7 against 72.9 of the state.

4. Agriculture: - During the year 2010-11, the net area sown was 144 thousand hectares against 4681 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 3922248 quintals, 307 quintals ragi, 68578 quintals mung, 29399 quintals biri, 6366 quintals kulthi, and 3310 quintals til, 54175 quintals groundnuts, 181 quintals mustard, and 47882 quintals potatoes and 29100 quintals of Sugarcane in Puri district. The consumption of fertilizers is about 17.97 thousand MT with a breakage of 9.28 MT thousand nitrogenous, 4.63 thousand MT phosphatic and 4.06 thousand MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 64 Kg. during the year 2010-11 as reported by DAO, Puri.

1 5. Irrigation : During the year 2010-11, it is reported by District Agriculture Officer, Puri that the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 103452 hectares and 47102 hectares respectively from different sources in the district.

6. Education : There were 2480 nos. of Primary & Upper primary schools, 770 nos. of Middle schools, 356 nos. of Secondary schools and 47 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2010-11.

7. Health : The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 66 nos. of the Allopathic medical institutions with 751 beds facilities. 16 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 24 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2010-11.

8. Veterinary Services : During the year 2010-11, 15 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 147 nos. of livestock Aid centers and 127 nos. of Artificial Insemination centres were functioning in Puri district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2010-11, 205 nos. of small scale industries have established with total capital investment of about Rs.837.00 lakhs with 1473 nos. of Employment generated in Puri district.

10. Power : Consumption of electricity in Puri district during the year 2010-11 covers 229.850 million units and villages so far electrified as on Feb’2011 is 1590 which constitutes 99.9 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Tourist : There are 20 nos. of tourist centers such as , Balighai, Baliharchandi, Barala (Balunkeswarpitha), Biswanath Hill, Beleswar, Brahmagiri, Chaurasi, Chilika, Jhaniapira, Kakatpur, , Kuruma, , Pipli, Puri, , Ramachandi, Satyabadi and Baligoan and identified by department of Tourism and Culture, Odisha. During the year

2 2011, the numbers of Domestic tourists were 15833106 and foreign tourists were 69539 who visited the tourists spots of the district.

12. Transport & Communication : During 2010-11, 132 Kms. of National Highways, 9 Kms. of state highways, 138 Kms. Major district roads, 287 kms of other district roads, 688 Kms of P.S. roads, 8738 Kms, of Gram Panchayat roads and 24 Kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 42.56 kms. of Railway lines with 10 nos. of railway stations and passenger halts are continuing in the district.

13. Banking: - As on March’ 2011 there were 125 nos. of schedule commercial banks having 2661 crores rupees deposit and 1103 crores rupees credit in the district. 
