FOREWORD

The Statistical Bulletin-2019 provides an overview of trends in Odisha’s tourism and hospitality sector, including inter alia tourist visits, hospitality accommodation related information and budgeted outlays and expenditures which offer insights into the government’s emerging focus. The report is compiled on the basis of available tourist data collected from various sources. The data have been analyzed on the basis of season of arrival, mode of transport, country-wise & state-wise break-up of tourists, tourist arrival to the State etc. Estimates of earnings through tourism and employment generated thereof have also been given. Important aspects of the report are summarized in the chapter “HIGHLIGHTS”. I hope this will be an indicative resource manual for research students, scholars, academicians, planners and others interested in Travel and Tourism Industry.

COUNTRY WISE BREAK- UP OF FOREIGN TOURISTS VISITING THE STATE

USA and Japan were the major tourist generating markets for Odisha during the year 2019 with 11709 and 10956 tourists respectively and followed by China-9508, U.K.- 8546, France-6195, Italy-5984, Netherlands- 5389, Germany-5126, Malayasia – 4694, and Bangladesh-3934. The number of foreign tourist arrival from different countries during last 3 years is given below in the following table.

STATE WISE BREAK- UP OF DOMESTIC TOURISTS VISITING THE STATE West Bengal continued to be the major tourist generating state for Odisha contributing 21,43,070 tourists i. e 14.00% of the total domestic tourists of 1,53,07,637 during 2019 and followed by Maharashtra – 4,01,061 , - 3,83,194, Andhra Pradesh- 3,69,312, - 3,52,576 , Uttar Pradesh- 3,50,549 , – 3,12,275, Tamilnadu -2,44,923, Bihar - 2,41,859 and Karnataka- 1,83,689. The number of domestic tourist visits from different States and Union Territories to Odisha during 2019 is given below in the following table.

IN FLOW OF MONEY THROUGH TOURIST SPENDING (EXPENDITURE) IN ODISHA It is difficult to estimate the earnings of the State from tourism because of the vary nature of the industry and the different sectors that are affected by it. However, an attempt was made to assess it by following sample survey method. A Tourist Profile Survey was conducted by the Department of Tourism, Govt. of Odisha during the year 2013-14. At that time the average duration of stay was found out to be 11.0 days in case of Foreign Tourist and 3.7 days in case of a Domestic Tourist. Similarly the average per capita expenditure was found out to be Rs.4167/- for a Foreign Tourist and Rs.2763/- for a Domestic Tourist. In the year 2018-19 another Tourist Profile Survey was conducted by the Department of Tourism to find out the changes , if any occurred in the Tourist Profiles . It was found that average duration of stay is 9.75 days in case of a Foreign Tourist and 3.75 days in case of a Domestic Tourist . Similarly the average per capita expenditure was found to be Rs. 4275 /- in case of Foreign Tourist and Rs.2655 /- in case of Domestic Tourist. The inflow of money through tourist expenditure for the year 2015 to 2019 is estimated on the basis of changed figures as mentioned above. The estimated figures are shown below in a table.
