Cooray taking part in a competitive athletic event after nearly four years fin- ished 22nd in London on Sunday which is now considered the second fastest marathon in the world. “I was thrilled to find that I could run to the timing I was doing some four years ago. I had not taken part in a marathon for four years when I took part in the London Marathon,” Cooray told ‘The Island’ speaking from London yesterday. Cooray’s timing of 2 hours 21.02 min- utes is a minute ahead of the qualifying standard set for the Delhi Commonwealth Games which will be held in 2010 in India. The qualifying standard for Delhi Commonwealth Games is set at 2 hours 22 minutes and 14 seconds for men’s marathons and incidentally the qualify- ing period for the Games started on April 25. “I wanted to see whether I could achieve World Championship standards. I wanted to run below 2 hours and 18 minutes. But I missed it as I ran too fast in the first 20 kilometers,” Cooray regretted. “Since I had not taken part in any events for the last four years I couldn’t manage my run properly,” Cooray said. The 31-year-old athlete left for England after taking part in the Athens Olympics in 2004 and is a SAF Games Gold medalist. Cooray achieved his personal best of two hours 16 minutes and 38 seconds in the SAF Games held in Islamabad in 2004 (Gold) and it was the best Marathon performance in SA Games by a Sri Lankan. Cooray said that he had very little time to practice as he works for a firm there but was happy that he could come- back to his form after starting training some seven months ago. • LANDS of LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, and the STRUGGLE for URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 by Caleb Edwin Owen
LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History-Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen The movement of people to cities has been a significant trend in the recent history of Africa; in the year 2000, the urban population in Africa superseded the rural. African cities are nonetheless underrepresented and misunderstood in historical scholarship. The predominant narrative of the city and urban life, particularly in the post-colonial context, has been one of impoverishment, social disjuncture, and state failure. My dissertation challenges this metanarrative, highlighting how non-elite Kenyan actors, through their struggles for public parks, playgrounds, and other spaces of leisure, had a stake in urban life and contributed to the production of the city. This dissertation highlights the role of recreation as a governing and community interest that shaped the development of urban policy and land use in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya’s two largest cities. Through allocation of land for clubs, the state affirmed its authority as an arbitrator of multiple interests and constituencies. During the 1940s and 1950s, the state, viewing African boredom as a cause of social delinquency, promoted the development of new spaces of leisure— social halls, playing fields, and public gardens. Rather than reaffirming the state’s position as the paternalistic guardian of African interests, these spaces were sites of social and cultural negotiation between urban Kenyans and colonial welfare officers.

THE INNER RING MAY 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope lockdown is treating you all well. Powerplay I have set myself various goals for the lockdown period, of which one of them was to read more. I have always enjoyed reading about the journeys of successful people and their habits, sacrifices and lessons learned along those journeys. One such fascinating journey is that of Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company from 2005 to February 2020. “The ride of a lifetime” is a fascinating reflection on his innovative way of thinking and relentless journey towards excellence. “I talk a lot about “the relentless pursuit of perfection”. In practice this can mean a lot of things, and it is hard to define. It is a mindset, more than a specific set of rules. It is not about perfectionism at all costs. It is about creating an environment in which people refuse to accept mediocrity. It is about pushing back against the urge to say that “good enough” is good enough.” – Robert Iger Thank you all for the positive feedback received last week. It was good to at least have a quick e-catchup and confirmation that you are still going strong. I value your input and therefore urge you to please continue sending your feedback, ideas and thoughts. THE INNER RING Feedback from last week’s “inswinger” – Who is your favourite Dolphins player of all time? The names of Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Hashim Amla, Shaun Pollock, Malcolm Marshall, Barry Richards, Mike Procter, and the current Proteas, Keshav, David and Andile came up quite frequently.

THE INNER RING JUNE 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope you are all still hanging in there and fighting the good fight. Powerplay As sport slowly returns to our lives, I hope that we all take a moment to reflect on the role that sport has played in all of our lives, and that we will appreciate every opportunity granted to engage in sporting activities. Not only does it promote a healthy lifestyle, but it also brings people together. It has played a significant role in the South African economy and has played a huge part in earning the respect of countries around the world, especially those countries that have had the unfortunate experience of being on the wrong side of a perfect South African display, whichever sporting code it may be. Some of the greatest moments in history have been created through sport, and through those gifted individuals and teams who have the magical ability to create something out of nothing, to achieve what was previously perceived to be impossible and to put lasting smiles on those that had the privilege of witnessing those moments. I once witnessed an interview where one of the proud golfers produced in Africa, Nick Price, after winning a tournament said: “It felt like I managed to capture lightning in a bottle” THE INNER RING That phrase captured my attention because it means to accomplish a nearly impossible task, to trap something elusive or fleeting. It is probably the perfect summary of every sportsman or woman’s dream. To achieve the impossible, to raise the bar and to achieve perfection, even if it is just for a small, fleeting moment.
