Cricket Services Managaer Address

“How time flies. Another season has come to an end. The 2018/2019 season has indeed been a busy one for KZN Inland. We enjoyed hosting the Africa Cup which saw us use two venues. This was an overwhelming success and we must thank our friends at UKZN Pietermaritzburg for their support and contribution to the success of that tournament.

Our senior provincial team had an indifferent season. Having the coach leave in the second half of the season meant the assistant coach Yusuf Abdullah had to take over. call ups on the bowling front meant we played our remaining matches with an under-strength attack but the performances of our batters Luke Schlemmer and Grant Roelofsen was a positive as we look to build our team with a new coach for next season.

Thanks and appreciation to all cricket services staff for the sterling work put in during the season. We have achieved the majority of our targets and grown the game in the Inland region during the season just completed. We look forward to the new season which will come with its own challenges.

KZN Inland is looking forward to hosting the Proteas women’s team in May when they play Pakistan. We will also be hosting the U19 series between South Africa and Pakistan in June/July. So, there is no off-season at Inland as we prepare for a host of activities.

We thank all those that have supported us during the 2018/2019 season and look forward to your continued support next season.”

Youth Cricket – Schools Round-Up 2018/2019

“Since I took charge of Youth Cricket at Inland for the past 8 months, it has been a good year filled with many successes, with more improvements to be done at KZN Inland Cricket, we are sure to reach greater heights.

This season we had successful Regional and National weeks trials and Final trials in August to September 2018 hosted by Howick Prep, St Charles College and Hilton College, in preparation for National and Regional weeks. We also had a successful Under 12 and 13 festival in September 2018 at St Charles College, Under 18 Weston and Voortrekker Weeks.

KZN Inland also hosted KZN Coastal versus KZN Inland U11,12 and 13 Festival (The Tollgate Cup) at St Charles College, the festival is also used as a camp for our junior teams in preparation for Regional and

National weeks, also we hosted a successful U15,17,19 boys and U19 Girls National week camp at Michaelhouse in November 2018.

On the down side of things, is that we did not have the results as we wanted at Regional and National Weeks. Reflection has been done and plans put into place come the start of the new season.

I’m proud that KZN Inland hosted a very successful U19 Girls National Week at Michaelhouse in December 2018, not ending there, also hosting a very success Provincial Coca Cola Schools T20 Challenge Finals and a great Regional Final between St Charles College (Inland) versus Westville Boys High (Coastal) at Pietermaritzburg Cricket Oval in February 2019.

As KZN Inland we also recently hosted a successful schools Annual General Meeting with all the Inland schools, also making sure that we still on the right track to drive forward our school/youth cricket to be in a healthier state for us to keep producing future Proteas stars, both in women and men’s cricket.

Overall I would like to thank all the KZN Inland Schools for the passion and assistance they keep offering me in making sure that youth cricket grows in all corners of Inland and would like to thank KZN Inland Cricket and KZN Cricket Union as whole on making sure that we working together hand in hand driving the Youth Cricket Ship together to achieve successful results although there is still so much more to be done.

In closing I would like to thank Michaelhouse in hosting a great U19 Girls tournament, so many good reviews are coming out of it and greatly thank St Charles College for making KZN Inland proud in reaching the Coca Cola Schools T20 National Final in their first year being at National Finals.”

Club Cricket Wrap-Up 2018/2019

“Curatorship of Carter was taken over by the union to maintain the high quality standard of our in Inland. We have maintained the throughout the season and indeed that has paid dividends with the good standard of cricket being played at Carter. We have also assisted Lancashire CC in maintenance of the wicket at Woodlands (Michael Patricks Oval). The 2018/2019 season has been a very stop-start season with the weather prevailing as the winner on many occasions and other times.

Going forth our plan is now to sit with clubs in the premier league and have one on one meetings to discuss the positives and working points to discuss going forward into the new season.

In closing, we have a Premier league play-off fixture between the Premier league last placed team Greytown CC vs Umthsezi CC whom are the Promotional league winners on the 07th April 2019. “

Mini-Cricket Activities

“The KFC Mini Cricket Programme is always a programme that is jammed packed with events. This season it wasn’t any different.

We had a particularly busy season as we launched mini cricket in the Zululand areas and all other areas. These were some of the highlights as most of the office staff attended these mini cricket launches to create awareness, and it has paid off in a big way as I cannot keep up with request for coaches education, player education and just anything that will better mini cricket.

Coaching Courses:

• We managed to host all our coaching courses for all the region falling under the auspices of KZN Inland. We have 18 regions and we managed to conduct these courses by combining the regions.

Festivals:

• Festivals will always be a highlight of the KFC Mini Cricket Program. • This season we were lucky to have also have additional assistance from LSM – Local Store Marketers who assisted in a big way.

Seminars:

• Our Provincial Seminar was a huge success, and it was done a bit differently this year as it was in the evening. • The Regional seminars that was introduced also contributed to the fact that the region were informed at all times of events and the regional coordinators were really good in assisting to get the coaches together for whatever event the union had.

Last but not least I want to thank each and everyone who have played a magnificent role in the big and successful season we had, as it is as always a team effort. Mini Cricket is played throughout the year so the hard work never stops, but I am always looking forward to new and exciting challenges and opportunities. “

Off-Season Training in Cricket by Leanna Kell (Newitts.com).

Off-season training in cricket By Leana Kell

The cricket season is currently taking a hiatus and many amateur cricket players may be enjoying a well-earned break, but Newitts is here to remind players it's not time to sit on your laurels just yet!

Certainly, the cricket season can be very demanding. It's busy, and long, and it demands high physical and mental commitment if players are to survive and come out of it triumphant. But for players to stay on form throughout the winter, a certain degree of off-season cricket training must be done.

Below, Newitts offers some off-season training tips to cricket players throughout the winter months.

Take a break.

Despite the importance of keeping fit during the cricket off-season, you are also entitled to a well-earned break. Every cricket player needs time to relax the mind and get the thoughts of technique and pressure of performance out of their systems for a few weeks. Taking a holiday or immersing yourself in a completely different sporting activity for a while, will help sway your mind away from cricket and give your bo dy and mind a rest. Join a yoga group.

Yoga is a popular sport, and one of the best forms of exercise for cricket players out of season. Similarly to Yoga, cricket playing is all about timing and touch. Yoga trains the brain to stay mindful and focused on the task at hand. In a similar way, cricket is all about stay ing focused on the ball at a specific time. A player's concentration can be the difference between making a good decision or not, therefore it is imperative that this skill is practiced regularly. Practice Pilates.

During the height of winter in December and January, Pilates is an excellent way to train the mind and body whilst your body takes a rest from the gym. Pilates strengthens your inner core and keeps your body strong. Pilates focuses on core strength and alignment and for those cricket players with any back issues, it can be invaluable. Once your foundations are strong and the weather starts to thaw, you can then return to heavier power weight sessions in time for the rigor of the full cricket season.

Start meditating.

This may not seem like an obvious connection to cricket, but meditation is becoming increasingly popular in Western society, and if performed regularly it can be a powerful tool to train the mind for cricket. The ability to bat for a length of time comes from mental concentration, patience and the ability to do simple things repeatedly. In a similar way, meditation trains the mind to focus on 'the breath' - cricket players such as have described how they focus on the breath in between balls to keep a clear min, (Newitts.com).
