Another season has come to an end. The 2018/2019 season has indeed been a busy one for KZN Inland. We enjoyed hosting the Africa Cup which saw us use two venues. This was an overwhelming success and we must thank our friends at UKZN Pietermaritzburg for their support and contribution to the success of that tournament. Our senior provincial team had an indifferent season. Having the coach leave in the second half of the season meant the assistant coach Yusuf Abdullah had to take over. Dolphins call ups on the bowling front meant we played our remaining matches with an under-strength attack but the performances of our batters Luke Schlemmer and Grant Roelofsen was a positive as we look to build our team with a new coach for next season. Thanks and appreciation to all cricket services staff for the sterling work put in during the season. We have achieved the majority of our targets and grown the game in the Inland region during the season just completed. We look forward to the new season which will come with its own challenges. KZN Inland is looking forward to hosting the Proteas women’s team in May when they play Pakistan. We will also be hosting the U19 series between South Africa and Pakistan in June/July. So, there is no off-season at Inland as we prepare for a host of activities. We thank all those that have supported us during the 2018/2019 season and look forward to your continued support next season.” Jason Sathiaseelan – KwaZulu-Natal Crikcet Inland Cricket Services Manager. KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Inland THE INLANDER |APRIL 2019| PAGE 2 Youth Cricket – Schools Round-Up 2018/2019 “Since I took charge of Youth Cricket at Inland for the past 8 months, it has been a good year filled with many successes, with more improvements to be done at KZN Inland Cricket, we are sure to reach greater heights. This season we had successful Regional and National weeks trials and Final trials in August to September 2018 hosted by Howick Prep, St Charles College and Hilton College, in preparation for National and Regional weeks. We also had a successful Under 12 and 13 festival in September 2018 at St Charles College, Under 18 Weston and Voortrekker Weeks. KZN Inland also hosted KZN Coastal versus KZN Inland U11,12 and 13 Festival (The Tollgate Cup) at St Charles College, the festival is also used as a camp for our junior teams in preparation for Regional and National weeks, also we hosted a successful U15,17,19 boys and U19 Girls National week camp at Michaelhouse in November 2018. On the down side of things, is that we did not have the results as we wanted at Regional and National Weeks. Reflection has been done and plans put into place come the start of the new season. I’m proud that KZN Inland hosted a very successful U19 Girls National Week at Michaelhouse in December 2018, not ending there, also hosting a very success Provincial Coca Cola Schools T20 Challenge Finals and a great Regional Final between St Charles College (Inland) versus Westville Boys High (Coastal) at Pietermaritzburg Cricket Oval in February 2019. As KZN Inland we also recently hosted a successful schools Annual General Meeting with all the Inland schools, also making sure that we still on the right track to drive forward our school/youth cricket to be in a healthier state for us to keep producing future Proteas stars, both in women and men’s cricket. Overall I would like to thank all the KZN Inland Schools for the passion and assistance they keep offering me in making sure that youth cricket grows in all corners of Inland and would like to thank KZN Inland Cricket and KZN Cricket Union as whole on making sure that we working together hand in hand driving the Youth Cricket Ship together to achieve successful results although there is still so much more to be done. In closing I would like to thank Michaelhouse in hosting a great U19 Girls tournament, so many good reviews are coming out of it and greatly thank St Charles College for making KZN Inland proud in reaching the Coca Cola Schools T20 National Final in their first year being at National Finals.” Kwazi Mdlulu – KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Inland: Youth Coordinator. KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Inland THE INLANDER |APRIL 2019| PAGE 3 Club Cricket Wrap-Up 2018/2019 “Curatorship of Carter was taken over by the union to maintain the high quality standard of our wickets in Inland. We have maintained the wicket throughout the season and indeed that has paid dividends with the good standard of cricket being played at Carter. We have also assisted Lancashire CC in maintenance of the wicket at Woodlands (Michael Patricks Oval). The 2018/2019 season has been a very stop-start season with the weather prevailing as the winner on many occasions and other times. Going forth our plan is now to sit with clubs in the premier league and have one on one meetings to discuss the positives and working points to discuss going forward into the new season. In closing, we have a Premier league play-off fixture between the Premier league last placed team Greytown CC vs Umthsezi CC whom are the Promotional league winners on the 07th April 2019. “ Muhammad Jooma – Clubs and Facilities Coordinator. The decline had perhaps begun as early as the 1999 World Cup final, and peaked during the 2003 World Cup tournament and it became more obvious in the aftermath of the twin series defeats against India at home in early 2004. The services of Bob Woolmer as coach were acquired by the Pakistan Cricket Board in an effort to ensure that the team came up with improved performance and did justice with the loads of talent. The move has paid dividends.

  • LANDS of LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, and the STRUGGLE for URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 by Caleb Edwin Owen
LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History-Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT LANDS OF LEISURE: RECREATION, SPACE, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR URBAN KENYA, 1900-2000 By Caleb Edwin Owen The movement of people to cities has been a significant trend in the recent history of Africa; in the year 2000, the urban population in Africa superseded the rural. African cities are nonetheless underrepresented and misunderstood in historical scholarship. The predominant narrative of the city and urban life, particularly in the post-colonial context, has been one of impoverishment, social disjuncture, and state failure. My dissertation challenges this metanarrative, highlighting how non-elite Kenyan actors, through their struggles for public parks, playgrounds, and other spaces of leisure, had a stake in urban life and contributed to the production of the city. This dissertation highlights the role of recreation as a governing and community interest that shaped the development of urban policy and land use in Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya’s two largest cities. Through allocation of land for clubs, the state affirmed its authority as an arbitrator of multiple interests and constituencies. During the 1940s and 1950s, the state, viewing African boredom as a cause of social delinquency, promoted the development of new spaces of leisure— social halls, playing fields, and public gardens. Rather than reaffirming the state’s position as the paternalistic guardian of African interests, these spaces were sites of social and cultural negotiation between urban Kenyans and colonial welfare officers.

THE INNER RING MAY 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope lockdown is treating you all well. Powerplay I have set myself various goals for the lockdown period, of which one of them was to read more. I have always enjoyed reading about the journeys of successful people and their habits, sacrifices and lessons learned along those journeys. One such fascinating journey is that of Robert Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company from 2005 to February 2020. “The ride of a lifetime” is a fascinating reflection on his innovative way of thinking and relentless journey towards excellence. “I talk a lot about “the relentless pursuit of perfection”. In practice this can mean a lot of things, and it is hard to define. It is a mindset, more than a specific set of rules. It is not about perfectionism at all costs. It is about creating an environment in which people refuse to accept mediocrity. It is about pushing back against the urge to say that “good enough” is good enough.” – Robert Iger Thank you all for the positive feedback received last week. It was good to at least have a quick e-catchup and confirmation that you are still going strong. I value your input and therefore urge you to please continue sending your feedback, ideas and thoughts. THE INNER RING Feedback from last week’s “inswinger” – Who is your favourite Dolphins player of all time? The names of Jonty Rhodes, Lance Klusener, Hashim Amla, Shaun Pollock, Malcolm Marshall, Barry Richards, Mike Procter, and the current Proteas, Keshav, David and Andile came up quite frequently.

THE INNER RING JUNE 2020 | SECOND INNINGS Dear Dolphins family Hope you are all still hanging in there and fighting the good fight. Powerplay As sport slowly returns to our lives, I hope that we all take a moment to reflect on the role that sport has played in all of our lives, and that we will appreciate every opportunity granted to engage in sporting activities. Not only does it promote a healthy lifestyle, but it also brings people together. It has played a significant role in the South African economy and has played a huge part in earning the respect of countries around the world, especially those countries that have had the unfortunate experience of being on the wrong side of a perfect South African display, whichever sporting code it may be. Some of the greatest moments in history have been created through sport, and through those gifted individuals and teams who have the magical ability to create something out of nothing, to achieve what was previously perceived to be impossible and to put lasting smiles on those that had the privilege of witnessing those moments. I once witnessed an interview where one of the proud golfers produced in Africa, Nick Price, after winning a tournament said: “It felt like I managed to capture lightning in a bottle” THE INNER RING That phrase captured my attention because it means to accomplish a nearly impossible task, to trap something elusive or fleeting. It is probably the perfect summary of every sportsman or woman’s dream. To achieve the impossible, to raise the bar and to achieve perfection, even if it is just for a small, fleeting moment.
