These manuscripts range from television and movie scripts to flight logs, accident report, personal recollections, and biographies/memoirs. Subjects include (but are not limited to) early flight, World War I, World War II, women avioators, air ships, and flight testing. Arrangement This collection is organized in two series, Manuscripts and Oversized Manuscripts, ordered by catalog number and shelf position. Oversized items are stored together. Biographical / Historical The materials in this collection were donated to the San Diego Air & Space Museum at various times by different donors. Scope and Contents The collection contains 92 manuscripts in 2 cubic feet, written/compiled between early twentieth century and early 21st century. These manuscripts range from television and movie scripts to flight logs, accident reports, personal recollections, and memoirs. Includes typed list of signals and codes, and a typed manual for the Lewis Automatic machine gun. General Condition: Fair. Problems. Pages are yellowed, with evidence of acid migration. MSS Item 2: Lafayette Escadrille: Diary of Patrols and Activities Feb 19, 1918 to March 19, 1919 Physical Description: Details regarding Patrols and activities in the Lafayette Escadrille, which was a French fighter squadron during World War I composed largely of American volunteer pilots. Complete photocopy of a handwritten diary. There is no accompanying narrative. General Condition: Excellent. NOTE: contains sticky notes. D 603 .L34 1918-1919 Item 3: Lafayette Escadrille: Log Book, Ledger Form of Flights, Kills, etc. June 1, 1919 to December 15, 1918 Physical Description: Details regarding flights and kills in the Lafayette Escadrille, which was a French fighter squadron during World War I composed largely of American volunteer pilots. Complete photocopy of a handwritten diary. There is no accompanying narrative. General Condition: Excellent. NOTE: Contains sticky notes. D 603 .L34 1918-1919 Item 4: Let’s Go Where the Action Is! Physical Description: Author: Douglas Campbell Letters of Douglas Campbell to his parents, July 22, 1917 – July 12, 1918. The letters “communicate something of the atmosphere and attitudes of that day and the birth of the U.S.Air Force (then officially the Aviation Section, Signal Corps) as a significant military force.” General Condition: Fair. Problems: Cover and some pages warped due to possible water damage. D 640 .C25 198? MSS Item 5: Kamikaze Air Attack: Eyewitness Account of Attack on USS Tennessee. Physical Description: Author: MSGT. Roger M Emmons. A detailed account of the Attack on Pearl Harbor from the perspective on a Marine officer that was onboard at the time of the attack. Includes drawing of the attack on the USS Tennessee and casualty list. General Condition: Fair. Problems: Text block has become detached from back cover. Binding is stapled and front pages are torn around the staples. Coleman. An account of a crew of the 8th US Air Force that worked jointly with the Royal Air Force in a campaign of strategic bombing to damage the German war industry. Includes images, maps, and mission records. General Condition: Good. Problems: Tape on cover prevents full/clean opening of item. Some pages partially torn from binding. D 790 .A535 445th 1989 MSS Item 7: Shademaid. Physical Description: Author: I. H. Lee Personal account of his experiences as a Navy aviator with Air Group 41. The group symbol was Shademaid. This particular Air Group pioneered night aircraft attacks from the USS Independence carrier. This covers approximately one year (1944-1945) of World War II. General Condition: Excellent. D 790 .A535 Air Grp. 41 2001 MSS Item 8: Personal Recollections of a Combat Tour in the US Eight Air Force-1944 (Carpetbaggers). Physical Description: Author: William E. Ebner. Describes missions flown between March 20, 1944 and August 19, 1944. Includes images, pull-out maps, and crew rosters. General Condition: Good. Problems: Tape used to adhere catalog number enclosed two pages, making personalized note from the author difficult to see. D 790 .E2 1998 MSS Item 9: Victory in the Pacific. Physical Description: Author: Michael Green and Gladys Green. “This book will attempt to provide the reader in words and pictures a very broad and very simple overview of the resulting war in the Pacific…” This book focuses and the US war with the Japanese during World War II from Pearl Harbor until the end of the war. General Condition: Good: Problems: Edges of cover are damaged. There is some fading/possible acid migration along all edges of the cover. D 790 .G733 1999 MSS Item 10: Bombing Squadron Six in Action: A Radio-Gunner Looks Back. Physical Description: Author: James F. Murray. A personal account of the missions/action of Bombing Squadron Six from Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) until after the Battle of Midway in June 1942. This also included personal opinions of events. General Condition: Good. Problems: Some yellowing along page edges and on the front cover. Title on cover is fading. D 790 .M868 1985? MSS Item 11: The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II: Perspectives on the Work of America’s First Military Women Aviators. Physical Description: Author: Natalie Jeanne Stewart-Smith. A thesis submitted to Washington State University. The study examines the varied attitudes and perceptions which affected the service and acceptance of the WASP who served in the Army Air Force from September 1942 until December 1944 but were civilian pilots rather than military personnel. General Condition: Good. Rust marks from metal binding. An analysis of the organization, training, and operations of the 201st Fighter Squadron, as the basis for assessing its performance and explain the significance of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force. Physical Description: Author: Amy Goodpaster Strebe. Thesis presented to San Jose State University. A comparison of the two all-women forces, focusing on their patriotism, the love of aviation, and the challenges that they each faced in order to establish the common ground that these women shared, despite having very different functions and purposes during the war.
