    JEREZ 8 SEPTEMBER RICCARDO PATRESE RETURNS TO FORMULA ONE WITH HONDA Ex Formula One driver Riccardo Patrese, who raced in 256 Grands Prix from 1977 to 1993, will get a taste of a modern Formula One car on Tuesday 9 September courtesy of the Honda Racing F1 Team. Riccardo will return to the driving seat when he takes the wheel of last year’s Honda RA107 race car at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain. The Honda Racing F1 Team extended the invitation of a guest drive to Riccardo following the Italian’s contribution to the celebrations for Rubens Barrichello’s 257th Grand Prix earlier this year. At the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix, Rubens broke Riccardo’s long-standing 15 year record to become the most experienced Grand Prix driver of all time. Whilst taking part in a celebratory golf tournament, Riccardo mentioned that he would love to try out a Honda F1 car, and the team were delighted to give him this opportunity. During his 17 year Formula One career, Riccardo Patrese achieved six wins, 37 podiums, eight pole positions and 13 fastest laps during his 256 race starts. He now commentates for Italian broadcaster Sky Sports Italia’s F1 coverage. The full details of Riccardo’s guest drive will be available on HondaRacingF1.com on Wednesday. The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

As Mario Andretti celebrates his 75th birthday on Feb. 28, one of the most magical names in international racing history chooses not to pause and reflect on his extraordinary accomplishments or his remarkable life. He doesn't think back to the long days when he grew up in a displaced persons camp in what is now Croatia from the darkest days Europe ever experienced during World War II. That is when Andretti's native Italy was under siege as a member of the Axis powers during the war. During the Istrian exodus of 1948, Andretti's family was confined to an internment camp in Lucca, Italy, along with other families trying to flee communism in post-World War II Europe. But there is one day that Andretti will remember on this milestone birthday, and it came on June 16, 1955. The ocean liner carrying Luigi and Rina Andretti's family cruised into New York Harbor, and the 15-year-old Mario saw the Statue of Liberty gleaming like a beacon of hope at dawn of a glorious summer day. "That was one memorable morning," Andretti told FOXSports.com from his home in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. "It was June 16, 1955, at 5 a.m. We were sailing past the Statue of Liberty on a beautiful, radiant morning, and we were celebrating my sister Ana Maria's 21st birthday.
