Color data are more valuable if they permit comparisons. We aimed to provide pelage objective color measurements of a series of Akodon budini and to use those color data to test and to quantitatively analyze the infl uence of both the lighting source and the measuring point, in the determination of pelage color of museum skins. We used a spectroradiometer to measure the pelage color at fi ve points over the dorsal midline of 54 Akodon budini museum skins. PCAs and ANOVAs were conducted over the color data. The characteristics of the studied series also allowed us to include and assess the potential effects of some main sources of intra- specifi c variation. Determinations of fur color strongly depend on the lighting source, and therefore it is essential that lighting conditions are controlled during color measurements and then made explicit when communicating the color characterization of particular taxonomic units. Furthermore, color determinations strongly depend on the measuring point, even on the same body area, and therefore it is critical that the color characterization of a taxon includes the variation between different points of the different body parts of the studied specimens. Barquez2 Abstract Objective: Determination of color and evaluating its variation form the basis for a broad range of research questions. For studies on taxonomy, systematics, etc., resorting to mammal specimens in museum collections has a number of advantages over using feld specimens. However, if museum specimens are to be for studying color, they should accurately represent the color of live animals, or we should understand how they difer. Basically, this study addresses this question: How does coat color vary when dealing with specimens of Akodon budini (Budin’s grass mouse, Thomas 1918), stored in one museum collection for diferent periods of time? Results: We measured color values through a spectroradiometer and a difuse illumination cabin and used the refectance values in the form of CIELab tri-stimulus values, considering CIE standard illuminant A. We observed that there is a relationship between specimen storage antiquity and pelage color and it seems that it is general for at least a number of small mammals and this could indicate a universal phenomenon across several mammal species and across several storage conditions. Our results, as others, emphasize the importance of considering storage time, among other circumstances, in research studies using mammal skins and where color is of importance.

Se describe la variación altitudinal de riqueza, recambio y composición de especies de micromamíferos mediante muestreos a lo largo de 4 transectos que van desde selvas a 500 m hasta los desiertos altoandinos a 4 000 m en el noroeste argentino. En general, la riqueza de micromamíferos decrece con la altitud, principalmente como consecuencia de la alta diversidad de murciélagos en las tierras bajas. En cambio, los micromamíferos terrestres mostraron un claro patrón curvilíneo de riqueza con un pico en altitudes intermedias, cerca de la línea superior de bosques a 2 700 m. Los valores máximos de los índices de recambio de especies se localizaron en el extremo superior del gradiente a 3 500 m. La composición de las comunidades de micromamíferos en cada transecto altitudinal individual fue concordante con el esquema fitogeográfico, encontrándose especies características de las selvas montanas, los bosques montanos y las estepas altoandinas. El análisis de los 4 transectos altitudinales juntos reveló que la altitud es la principal fuente de variación en la composición de especies.

[Correspondence: Pablo Teta <[email protected]>] ABSTRACT. Sigmodontine rodents, with 86 genera and ~430 living species, constitute one of the most successful radiations of Neotropical mammals. In this contribution, we studied the distributional ranges of 108 sigmodontine species in Argentina. Our objectives were (i) to establish geographical patterns of species richness and endemism, and (ii) to evaluate the regional conservation status of these taxa. We constructed a minimum convex polygon for each species, using information from literature and biological collections. Individual maps were superimposed on a map of Argentina divided into cells of 25 km on each side. For each cell, we calculated the species rich- ness, which varied between 1 and 21 species, and its degree of endemism, which fluctuated between 0.001 and 3.28. There were 30 species of sigmodontine rodents distributed almost exclusively in Argentina, most of them restricted to forested areas (Southern Andean Yungas) or to arid and semiarid environments (High and Low Monte and Patagonian Steppe). Areas with high species richness and endemism scores corresponded grossly with the Southern Andean Yungas, the Humid Chaco plus the Paraná flooded savannas, the Alto Parana Atlantic forests plus the Araucaria moist forests, the High Monte and the ecotone between the Patagonian steppe and the Valdivian temperate forests.

B. griserufescens (2n = 52/FN = 52-53) differed from the other three karyologi- cally identical species (2n = 54/FN = 64). Furthermore, comparisons of O. hispidus and O. caraparoe G- band karyotypes with data in the literature indicated that these species were karyologically identical with O. roberti, O. angularis, O. rutilans, Oxymycterus sp., O. rufus, O. paramensis, O. nasutus, and O. akodontius. Morphological characteristics allowed the distinction of two consistent groups, one in- cluding O. iheringi and B. griserufescens, characterized by reduced claws and a small body size, and an- other, of typical Oxymycterus species, with well-developed claws and medium or large body size.

The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the diversity of siphonaptera that parasitize small mammals from the NOA, emphasizing in their systematics and distribution. Specimens of fleas collected in several localities of NOA, and stored in the “Annexes” of the Colección Mamíferos Lillo, Universidad Nacional de Tucuman, Argentina, were studied. Fleas were manually removed from the host pelage, fixed in alcohol 70 % and prepared following conventional techniques for later observation under microscope. For specimen identification, the original descriptions of species and subspecies were reviewed and compared with specimens stored in systematic collections. Nine families, 22 genera, 53 species, and eight subspecies were recorded. A new family, a new genus, and three new species are recorded for the first time in Argentina; five species are new for NOA and nine are new to science.
