The Hawaiian happy face spider (Theridion grallator Simon, 1900), named for a remarkable abdominal colour pattern resembling a smiling face, has served as a model organism for under- standing the generation of genetic diversity. Theridion grallator is one of 11 endemic Hawaiian species of the genus reported to date. Asserting the origin of island endemics informs on the evolutionary context of diversification, and how diversity has arisen on the islands. Studies on the genus Theridion in Hawaii, as elsewhere, have long been hampered by its large size (> 600 species) and poor definition. Here we report results of phylogenetic analyses based on DNA sequences of five genes conducted on five diverse species of Hawaiian Theridion, along with the most intensive sampling of Theridiinae analysed to date. Results indicate that the Hawai- ian Islands were colonised by two independent Theridiinae lineages, one of which originated in the Americas. Both lineages have undergone local diversification in the archipelago and have convergently evolved similar bizarre morphs. Our findings confirm para- or polyphyletic status of the largest Theridiinae genera: Theridion, Achaearanea and Chrysso. -

ABSTRACT: A total of 13,662 individuals were collected in the 4 districts of northeastern U.P., viz. Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Siddharthnagar belonging to 75 morphospecies out of which 62 were identified upto species level. The most dominant family was Araneidae (31 species) followed by Tetragnathidae, 10 species; Salticidae, 9 species; Lycosidae, 8 species; Thomisidae, Clubionidae and Theridiidae each 3 species; Oxyopidae, Pholcidae and Gnaphosidae each 2 species and Sparassidae and Hersiliidae each 1 species. Following species were most dominant in occurrence: Tetragnatha javana (6.41%), Oxyopes javanus (6.40%), Pardosa pseudoannulata (6.35%), Pardosa birmanica (6.06%), Tetragnatha mandibulata (5.56%), Hippasa holmerae (5.14%), Tetragnatha maxillosa (4.79%), Hippasa partita (4.61%), Araneus ellipticus (4.37%), Camaricus formosus (4.36%), and Lycosa mackenziei (4.09%). It demonstrated that 31.39% of the total collections were observed in Siddharthnagar district followed by Maharajganj (25.89%), Gorakhpur (21.97%) and Kushinagar (20.74%). Orb weabers (44.34%) formed the most dominant guild followed by ground runners (28.8%), Stalkers (16.58%), foliage runners (4.86%) and ambusers (4.76%) which were less common in the study area while very few specimens of space builders (0.67%) were caught in the study area. This enlisting also highlights the species of the orb-weaving families which are endemic to India. This is a simple, sorted compilation of the diversity of Asian Orb-weavers. Keywords: Asia, India, Araneae, endemic, orb-weavers, spider fauna. INTRODUCTION “Orb-Weavers” as we know, are the most common group of builders of spiral wheel- shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests. Their common name is taken from the round shape of this typical web, and the taxon was formerly also referred to as the Orbiculariae and are basically categorized under the Superfamilies Araneoidea, Cyatholipoidea, Deinopoidea, Linyphioidea, Symphytognathoidea and Theridioidea. A total of 20 families are categorised within these superfamilies, while Asian continent records 15 families viz., Anapidae Simon, 1895; Araneidae Clerck, 1757; Deinopidae C.L. Koch, 1850; Linyphiidae Blackwall, 1859; Mimetidae Simon, 1881; Mysmenidae Petrunkevitch, 1928; Nephilidae Simon, 1894; Nesticidae Simon, 1894; Pimoidae Wunderlich, 1986; Symphytognathidae Hickman, 1931; Synaphridae Wunderlich, 1986; Tetragnathidae Menge, 1866; Theridiidae Sundevall, 1833; Theridiosomatidae Simon, 1881 and Uloboridae Thorell, 1869. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present work is based on the review of the orb-weaving families which are included in Platnick’s World Spider Catalog and recently uploaded online version of World Spider Catalog (2016) and also by consulting published books, materials and available literature. -

ZooKeys 556: 1–17. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.556.6174 Abstract Depreissia is a little known genus comprising two hymenopteran-mimicking species, one found in Central Africa and one in the north of Borneo. The male of D. decipiens is redescribed, the female is described for the first time. The carapace is elongated, dorsally flattened and rhombus-shaped, the rear of the thorax laterally depressed and transformed, with a pair of deep pits; the pedicel is almost as long as the abdomen. The male palp is unusual, characterized by the transverse deeply split membranous tegulum separating a ventral part which bears a sclerotized tegular apophysis and a large dagger-like retrodirected median apo- physis. -

Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur, India ABSTRACT: A total of 62 species of spiders belonging to 36 genera and 12 families were recorded in the district Siddharthnagar, U.P. during the study. Among them, the family Araneidae includes almost half of the species (45.2%) followed by Salticidae (12.9%) and rest of the families consist of less than 10% of the species. The guild structure of the spiders reveals following 6 kinds: Orb weaver, stalkers, ground runner, foliage runner, space builder and ambushers. Most of the spiders (54.9%) are orb weavers followed by stalkers (10%), ground runner (7%), space builder (5%), foliage runner (4%) and ambushers (2%). This is the first attempt to report the spider assemblages and their microhabitat preferences from northeastern, Uttar Pradesh, India. Ten species were reported for the first time from Uttar Pradesh while one species Argiope luzona (Walckenaer, 1841) was recorded for the first time from India.Such surveys are vital for conservation of these creatures which are helpful for natural pest control and regarded as good indicators of habitat quality. THE RAFFLES BULLETIN OF ZOOLOGY 2009 57(2): i Date of Publication: 31 Aug.2009 © National University of Singapore EDITORIAL The Raffl es Bulletin of Zoology had an productive year for 2009—18 papers in 57(1) and 23 papers in this issue, 57(2). This is a total of 41 papers published in the two regular issues of the Bulletin and an additional 15 in the second crustacean supplement, which was published on 31 July 2009. We are also expecting to publish perhaps three more supplements this year, including a checklist of world decapod genera. Our Associate Editor for Crustacea, Dr. Tohru Naruse, has left the National University of Singapore (NUS) for a faculty position at the University of Ryukyus. Although he is now no longer in Sinagpore, he has kindly agreed to continue serving as an Associate Editor for crustacean manuscripts. We also take this opportunity to welcome a new Associate Board member, Dr. Tran Anh Duc, from the Hanoi University of Science, Hanoi, Vietnam. Dr. Tran is a recent graduate of NUS and specialises in aquatic Heteroptera taxonomy (for example, see Polhemus et al., 2009, and Zettel & Tran, 2009). Research into the history of the Bulletin has revealed that several volumes had publication dates inconsistent with the publisher’s dates as printed on the wrapper(s) of the Bulletin. This has pushed back the dates of publications of several volumes (by a year) and brought forward by a year the date of publication of one volume. The volumes relevant to brachyuran taxonomy have been dealt with in a paper in the second crustacean supplement (Low et al., 2009a).
