    Gary Schwartz A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings as a Test Case for Connoisseurship Seldom has an exercise in connoisseurship had more going for it than the world-famous Rembrandt Research Project, the RRP. This group of connoisseurs set out in 1968 to establish a corpus of Rembrandt paintings in which doubt concer- ning attributions to the master was to be reduced to a minimum. In the present enquiry, I examine the main lessons that can be learned about connoisseurship in general from the first three volumes of the project. My remarks are limited to two central issues: the methodology of the RRP and its concept of authorship. Concerning methodology,I arrive at the conclusion that the persistent appli- cation of classical connoisseurship by the RRP, attended by a look at scientific examination techniques, shows that connoisseurship, while opening our eyes to some features of a work of art, closes them to others, at the risk of generating false impressions and incorrect judgments.As for the concept of authorship, I will show that the early RRP entertained an anachronistic and fatally puristic notion of what constitutes authorship in a Dutch painting of the seventeenth century,which skewed nearly all of its attributions. These negative judgments could lead one to blame the RRP for doing an inferior job. But they can also be read in another way. If the members of the RRP were no worse than other connoisseurs, then the failure of their enterprise shows that connoisseurship was unable to deliver the advertised goods. I subscribe to the latter conviction. This paper therefore ends with a proposal for the enrichment of Rembrandt studies after the age of connoisseurship.

The revival of a myth in the seventeenth-century Republic Geneva, 31 May – 2 June 2018 « ’T was in dien tyd de Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst, en de goude appelen (nu door akelige wegen en zweet naauw te vinden) dropen den Konstenaars van zelf in den mond » (‘This time was the Golden Age for Art, and the golden apples (now hardly to be found if by difficult roads and sweat) fell spontaneously in the mouths of Artists.’) Arnold Houbraken, De groote schouburgh der nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen, 1718-1721, vol. II, p. 237.1 In 1719, the painter Arnold Houbraken voiced his regret about the end of the prosperity that had reigned in the Dutch Republic around the middle of the seventeenth century. He indicates this period as especially favorable to artists and speaks of a ‘golden age for art’ (Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst). But what exactly was Houbraken talking about? The word eeuw is ambiguous: it could refer to the length of a century as well as to an undetermined period, relatively long and historically undefined. In fact, since the sixteenth century, the expression gulde(n) eeuw or goude(n) eeuw referred to two separate realities as they can be distinguished today:2 the ‘golden century’, that is to say a period that is part of history; and the ‘golden age’, a mythical epoch under the reign of Saturn, during which men and women lived like gods, were loved by them, and enjoyed peace and happiness and harmony with nature.

Carlson Part I: Art of France from the French Revolution to the End of the Third Republic, 1790-1940. General Reference Works and Monographs on Artists, with a special emphasis on prints and printmaking The art historian and art dealer Eric G. Carlson (1940-2016) was a noted specialist in French and American prints and drawings of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A mediaevalist by training (Ph.D. Yale University), and professor at the State University of New York at Purchase from 1978 to 2006, Carlson brought a scholar's acumen to his exploration of lesser-known fields and figures of French art. His library reflects this, being exceptionally rich not just on the major artists of the era, but on the many painters and printmakers who remain to this day little known to the general public. Its coverage of the art of Romanticism, Realism, and Post-Impressionism, with very impressive concentrations on Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Degas and Gauguin, among others, is matched by a fascinating depth in the Symbolist and Nabi movements and the School of Pont-Aven, and the myriad Academic and Salon artists, illustrators and caricaturists who flourished between the start of the Second Empire and the end of the Third Republic. The library is unusually complete and sophisticated in the documentation and critical study of all aspects of the period, with rare exhibition and auction catalogues, and scarce early monographs, as well as the latest academic scholarship.

    Knowledge and Auctoritas in Coornhert’s Zedekunst Julie Rogiest (Ghent University) Introduction In 1586, one of the most important works of the Dutch philosopher Dirck Coornhert, Zedekunst dat is wellevenskunste or The art of the virtuous life,1 was first published2. This work was the first systematized form of ethics ever to have been written in the Dutch language. Apart from that, the text also provides us with a full overview of the philosophical and moral program of its writer. This program, which earned Coornhert the title of « the sixteenth century champion of moral perfectionism »3, can be rendered by three important lines of thought that also make out the core of the rest of his impressive œuvre:4 moral perfectibility5, the search for Truth and moderation in all things “human”6. As I hope to show, the right sort of knowledge plays a central part in Coornhert’s perfectibilist project, and this mostly with regard to the good management of the human emotions or “hartstochten”, which necessarily underlies the virtuous life or “welleven”.     Ernst Gombrich: Iconology and the ‘linguistics of the image’* Richard Woodfield At the turn of the millennium, Ernst Gombrich published a new preface to Art and Illusion. Unlike its predecessors it did not simply update his argument with new research but instead made a defence of his entire project. He argued that there was a fundamental difference between reading a text and responding to a figurative image and it lay in the different mental sets required for the two activities. Furthermore, he argued that in an age of new visual technologies it was absurd to argue that the illusionist image was a myth and there were not ways in which it could become instrumentally better. The difference between the early photograph and virtual reality lay in objective discoveries in the area of visual simulation. This line of argument was prompted by a body of criticism of his work that had emerged in England and America in the 80s, sparked off by Norman Bryson’s book The Vision and the Gaze: What the ancient Greeks called mimesis (the imitation of nature) has proved a difficult task: it took the artists of the ancient world some 250 years of systematic research to achieve this end, and artists of the Renaissance took the same time before they were able to eliminate what Albrecht Dürer called “falseness” in pictures. ...this commonsense interpretation of the history of Western art has recently been attacked on the ground that the whole idea of mimesis, truth to nature, is a will- o’-the-wisp, a vulgar error. There never was an image that looked like nature; all images are based on conventions, no more and no less than is language or the characters of our scripts.
