Not So Awesome A record of events while working for That Guy With The Glasses There are many different grievances that need to be shared, but the following points are what we feel are the most grievous and should be known by the public above all others. This is for record/organization and to help clarify and inform. This is not about defamation or destruction, but about clearing the air and correcting misconceptions. For an abridged, simplified account of all grievances, please refer to the condensed version here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1d7UTXkL5HqywUqNMXwL 5nVG4R84Hr1GX7Phagi15mUo/edit?usp=sharing FOREWORD Thank you for taking the time to read the contents of this document. Within its many pages are lengthy stories from a number of contributors airing their grievances about the way they and others were handled by working professionally with Channel Awesome and the management, namely Mike Michaud, Doug Walker, and Rob Walker. Although the descriptions are vast, this very likely does not cover every possible story of mismanagement over the course of the last ten years. There are other content creators, both those who were previously partnered with Channel Awesome, and those who continue to be partnered with Channel Awesome, who have not contributed their stories to this document, though many of their stories can be found in other places if you look hard enough. There are numerous reasons why any of us would want to share these stories with you. The biggest one is simply a strong common belief that the public deserves the right to know about the dealings within this company.

  • Gaming Critics
Aidan Cole 1 Validity of Gaming Critics Every art form has critics and judges. Movie critics, photography critics, music judges: these are people whom the public rely on to help differentiate between mediocre and master- pieces. As a species, we want to see the best of what we can create; therefore we rely on critics and judges to help guide us in our search of praising others’ artistic expression. In recent years, there has been a new realm of critics who have surfaced: gaming critics. The official definition of video game is “any of various interactive games played using a specialized electronic gaming device or a computer or mobile device and a television or other display screen, along with a means to control graphic images.” (“video game”). Since the age of the classic arcade games such as Pac-Man, Galaga, and Donkey Kong, we have loved playing video games. They gave us a rush of excitement as we competed with one another to see who could score the highest, or reach the highest level. Jason Gastrow, a popular video game critic on Youtube known as Videogamedunkey, or Dunkey, says in a video, “Arcades were brimming with looping endless games that demanded one knee-jerk reaction after another…These were games designed to kill you (the player) fast and suck down quarters, and people loved them. Then in the mid 1980s we see the focus shifting back towards consoles with the NES (Nintendo Entertain- ment System).” (Dunkey “Difficulty in Videogames Part 2”). As technology grew, video games went through a rather quick transformation, from a passing form to a must have form of enter- tainment, and for some, an actual career choice.

  • The Conquest of Youtube
The Conquest of YouTube COUNTER-IDEOLOGICAL STRATEGIES IN A NEW DIGITAL LEFT NOAH SAARELA GNVM03 VT20 Genusvetenskapliga Institutionen, Lunds Universitet Handledare: Ov Cristian Norocel Abstract Over the last few years, the user-generated video-sharing online platform YouTube has been recognized by the academia as well as mainstream media as an arena for predominately right- wing political content, and radicalizing far-right extremism in particular. This thesis introduces and explores the construction of a new digital left in the left-wing phenomenon LeftTube on YouTube. Through using critical feminist discourse analysis, it examines counter-ideological strategies to alt-right beliefs on gender and sexuality in 21 videos by the four popular content creators within the community. It analyses counter-speech tactics and alternatives to far-right constructions of masculinity as well as the possibilities of left-wing politics in the online community, concluding that LeftTube can be understood as a left-wing critical knowledge project adapted to an online audience to promote leftist feminist perspectives with emancipatory goals. • I Stereotypes and Signifiers of Cultural Change: Situating Disney
Stereotypes and signifiers of cultural change: Situating Disney presentations of mental health conditions as feminine by Hayley Taylor Markovich A thesis submitted to the graduate faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Communication Auburn, Alabama May 7, 2018 Keywords: health communication, mental health, women, stereotypes, Pixar, animation Copyright 2018, by Hayley Taylor Markovich Approved by George Plasketes, Chair, Professor of Communication and Journalism Andrea Kelley, Assistant Professor of Communication and Journalism Elizabeth Wilhoit, Assistant Professor of Communication and Journalism i Abstract The purpose of this paper is to study portrayals of mental health conditions in animated children’s film, situating them as feminine. Specifically, it aims to add to the understandings of Disney-Pixar’s portrayals of mental health conditions and the resulting cultural stereotypes. This paper utilizes a content analysis of three Pixar films with female lead characters from the 2000s and 2010s. Additionally the methodology draws on a diachronic total history as described by Klinger (1997) in order to study these films as larger cultural objects of influence, in the conversation between mass media and mental health portrayals. Conclusions can be drawn about whether Disney-Pixar’s presentations of mental health conditions and female characters reflect, parallel, or deviate from the cultural views of the time period. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank everyone that has helped me along the process of the past year on my way to completing this thesis. First, thank you to my chair, Dr. George Plasketes, for his time, knowledge, and guidance.

  • Modernizing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act After Lenz V
THIS VERSION MAY CONTAIN INACCURATE OR INCOMPLETE PAGE NUMBERS. PLEASE CONSULT THE PRINT OR ONLINE DATABASE VERSIONS FOR THE PROPER CITATION INFORMATION. NOTE COULD SOMEONE “LENZ” A HAND?: MODERNIZING THE DIGITAL MILLENNIUM COPYRIGHT ACT AFTER LENZ V. UNIVERSAL MUSIC CORP. BRANDAN RAY* ABSTRACT When the Supreme Court of the United States chose to deny a petition for certiorari to Lenz v. Universal Music Corp. it left the state of Internet copyright in a field of uncertainty. The case arising from the Ninth Circuit rightfully held that § 512(f) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act requires fair-use to be considered prior to a takedown notice being issued. However, it wrongfully con- cluded that fair use, long held to be an affirmative defense, should instead be a right granted by the statute, and elected to impose an easily abused subjective good-faith standard for copyright holders seeking to remove online content for copyright infringement. This oversight on the Ninth Circuit’s part must be cor- rected by either judicial mandate or legislative changes to the copyright statute. Those who have written on this have continually left out the online community and how they will be affected by the holding in this case. Leaving online content creators and producers out of any solution would be a grave mistake given their influence they have had over Internet legislation in the past decade. This paper seeks to offer a solution that is capable of balancing the interests of both copyright holders and online content producers that use copyrighted con- tent. This involves critiquing several previously proposed solutions, and offering more statutory solutions that are capable of undoing any uncertainty created from the Lenz holding.

RICHARD HARVEY SELECTED CREDITS THE LITTLE PRINCE (2015) (co-composer) INTERSTELLAR (2014) (conductor) DEATH OF A PRESIDENT (2006) (composer) THE DA VINCI CODE (2006) (conductor, composer: “Kyrie for the Magdalene”) LUTHER (2003) (composer) BIOGRAPHY Since graduating from the Royal College of Music in 1972, at the age of 18, Richard Harvey has been a ubiquitous and diverse presence on the London music scene, not only as a prolific composer and conductor but an exceptional virtuoso performer of almost 700 instruments from around the world - blown, plucked, keyed, bowed, beaten and programmed. Richard's early forays into the professional world involved performing on medieval and Renaissance-era instruments with early music ensemble Musica Reservata, and his own progressive rock and folk band, Gryphon, in which he toured three continents, recorded five albums, and played over 30 different instruments. Richard has come a long way since starting recorder lessons at the age of four, progressing via a stint as first clarinet with the British Youth Symphony Orchestra to recording for and collaborating with major contemporary composers including John Williams, Stanley Myers, Harry Gregson-Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and many others. Most recently Richard and long-term collaborator and Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer co- composed the score for Onyx’s 2016 production ‘The Little Prince’, an enchanting animation directed by Mark Osborne. Prior to this, Richard conducted the orchestra for Hans Zimmer’s 2014 ‘Interstellar’, an adventure sci-fi starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Richard’s collaborations continued in 2014 with Bill Conran with a co- composition for the score of horror film, ‘Curse of the Pheonix’.

Webtelevision, or Web TV production, distribution, and financing systems will be detailed in the case studies made; and industry actors such as entrepreneurs, independents, corporations and conglomerates will be discussed and identified. Who are the producers, the advertisers, the distribution platforms, the sponsors, the rights holders, and how do they interact? In exploring the structure of some examples of Web TV, I wish to debunk the online-amateur association as an inaccurate or insufficient description which permeates much prior academic study on online video. Webshow content, business strategies, legal and copyright issues, as well as fan culture aspects will also be investigated; and in regards to eSports, the question of televised as opposed to streamcast tournaments will be

INTRODUCTION With the rise in popularity of Let’s Play (“LP”) videos and re- action videos over the past decade, takedown demands and claims for copyright infringement have become widespread on YouTube. LP videos often feature a play-through or demonstration of the mechan- ics of a video game accompanied by a gamer’s commentary,1 while reaction videos record an individual’s response to some stimulus, such as a television episode or film clip.2 Both types of videos typi- cally use copyrighted content from other individuals and companies without licenses, which turns them into targets for large companies, such as Nintendo, that vigorously police their copyrights.3 In accord- ance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”), which 4 was enacted in 1998 to protect copyrighted material on the internet, * Touro College Jacob D.
