Specifically, it aims to add to the understandings of Disney-Pixar’s portrayals of mental health conditions and the resulting cultural stereotypes. This paper utilizes a content analysis of three Pixar films with female lead characters from the 2000s and 2010s. Additionally the methodology draws on a diachronic total history as described by Klinger (1997) in order to study these films as larger cultural objects of influence, in the conversation between mass media and mental health portrayals. Conclusions can be drawn about whether Disney-Pixar’s presentations of mental health conditions and female characters reflect, parallel, or deviate from the cultural views of the time period. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank everyone that has helped me along the process of the past year on my way to completing this thesis. Any mental illness can range in impact from no impairment, to mild impairment, or disabling impairment of major life activities. The NIMH (2015b) further reports that in 2015, about 9.8 million American adults had significant mental illness. This is defined as a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder that results in serious functional impairment, which interferes with one or more major life activities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2012), an estimated 13% of children aged 8 to 15 had a diagnosable mental health disorder, across all categories, in the last year. In terms of children’s mental health the most common conditions are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at 8.6 percent, followed by major depressive disorder at 2.7 percent (CDC, 2012). These are important statistics to consider because they show that a significant proportion of the American population currently has, or has experienced a mental health problem. There is a negative stigma regarding mental health conditions that affects how others perceive those with the lived experience of a mental health condition. These stigmas are often perpetuated through media representations. Disney-Pixar has built an empire anchored in the medium of animation. Animated film can provide the viewing audience an outlet for understanding people and popular issues. One way that animated movies, specifically Disney and Pixar films, have functioned in this capacity is the changing representations of mentally challenged characters. In fact, Pixar Animation Studios is celebrated for its willingness to give 1 disability, especially mental health challenges, high profile exposure via the character of Dory from Finding Nemo and Finding Dory (Heady, 2016). Overall, mental health professionals laud the change in presenting characters with mental health problems (Heady, 2016). The introduction of characters that are explicitly identified as having a mental health conditions is worth noting because Walt Disney films have historically blurred the line between fiction and reality, madness and sanity. While representations of mental health conditions in Disney films have become more positive and accurate, Disney-Pixar, like earlier Disney films, still falls victim to common film tropes that continually present mental health struggles as ‘feminine.’ This gendered depiction of mental health conditions

    Aidan Cole 1 Validity of Gaming Critics Every art form has critics and judges. Movie critics, photography critics, music judges: these are people whom the public rely on to help differentiate between mediocre and master- pieces. As a species, we want to see the best of what we can create; therefore we rely on critics and judges to help guide us in our search of praising others’ artistic expression. In recent years, there has been a new realm of critics who have surfaced: gaming critics. The official definition of video game is “any of various interactive games played using a specialized electronic gaming device or a computer or mobile device and a television or other display screen, along with a means to control graphic images.” (“video game”). Since the age of the classic arcade games such as Pac-Man, Galaga, and Donkey Kong, we have loved playing video games. They gave us a rush of excitement as we competed with one another to see who could score the highest, or reach the highest level. Jason Gastrow, a popular video game critic on Youtube known as Videogamedunkey, or Dunkey, says in a video, “Arcades were brimming with looping endless games that demanded one knee-jerk reaction after another…These were games designed to kill you (the player) fast and suck down quarters, and people loved them. This thesis introduces and explores the construction of a new digital left in the left-wing phenomenon LeftTube on YouTube. Through using critical feminist discourse analysis, it examines counter-ideological strategies to alt-right beliefs on gender and sexuality in 21 videos by the four popular content creators within the community. It analyses counter-speech tactics and alternatives to far-right constructions of masculinity as well as the possibilities of left-wing politics in the online community, concluding that LeftTube can be understood as a left-wing critical knowledge project adapted to an online audience to promote leftist feminist perspectives with emancipatory goals. What methods did the producers employ in the features? I also wanted to look at the influence of Nazi propaganda on its counterpart, American propaganda. The majority of the focus on propaganda centered around Frank Capra’s “Why We Fight Series.” The focus on cartoons as a means of propaganda largely faded into obscurity. Disney took on the task of making propaganda more palatable to the American people through the use of cartoons. American public opinion on propaganda influenced the characteristics and themes of each cartoon.

BRANDAN RAY* ABSTRACT When the Supreme Court of the United States chose to deny a petition for certiorari to Lenz v. Universal Music Corp. it left the state of Internet copyright in a field of uncertainty. The case arising from the Ninth Circuit rightfully held that § 512(f) of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act requires fair-use to be considered prior to a takedown notice being issued. However, it wrongfully con- cluded that fair use, long held to be an affirmative defense, should instead be a right granted by the statute, and elected to impose an easily abused subjective good-faith standard for copyright holders seeking to remove online content for copyright infringement. This oversight on the Ninth Circuit’s part must be cor- rected by either judicial mandate or legislative changes to the copyright statute. Those who have written on this have continually left out the online community and how they will be affected by the holding in this case. Leaving online content creators and producers out of any solution would be a grave mistake given their influence they have had over Internet legislation in the past decade. This paper seeks to offer a solution that is capable of balancing the interests of both copyright holders and online content producers that use copyrighted con- tent. This involves critiquing several previously proposed solutions, and offering more statutory solutions that are capable of undoing any uncertainty created from the Lenz holding.

Richard's early forays into the professional world involved performing on medieval and Renaissance-era instruments with early music ensemble Musica Reservata, and his own progressive rock and folk band, Gryphon, in which he toured three continents, recorded five albums, and played over 30 different instruments. Richard has come a long way since starting recorder lessons at the age of four, progressing via a stint as first clarinet with the British Youth Symphony Orchestra to recording for and collaborating with major contemporary composers including John Williams, Stanley Myers, Harry Gregson-Williams, Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and many others. Most recently Richard and long-term collaborator and Hollywood legend Hans Zimmer co- composed the score for Onyx’s 2016 production ‘The Little Prince’, an enchanting animation directed by Mark Osborne. Prior to this, Richard conducted the orchestra for Hans Zimmer’s 2014 ‘Interstellar’, an adventure sci-fi starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. Richard’s collaborations continued in 2014 with Bill Conran with a co- composition for the score of horror film, ‘Curse of the Pheonix’.
