We had been offered a tour of the local region by our host in Leaving Urgup, Jan was pleased that we did not have to ride his car, but by the time I was ready to do anything it was almost back down the cobbles, as she was a bit concerned about it. Not lunch time. The hotel itself was quite fascinating and I wandered that far out of the town we stopped at a church built out of the round taking photos of the place. The lunch stop was great, as it was at a traditional Anatolian restaurant. We sat on cushions on a platform over the river. It wasn’t until then that I found that the knees of my Gore-tex trousers were peppered with small thorns, presumably from our tumble. As we had spent more time than planned at the stone church and at Mevlana, the interesting route for the afternoon was substituted for with a blast down a dual-carriageway, as we were on a time-limit for that evening. It was rather cold, and when we stopped for petrol the guys in the station made us all chai and took David into their rest room to warm-up by the fire. I can only hope that Turks, or anyone else visiting Britain, would be treated with the same consideration. So those would be genuine Turkish Ray-Bans then. ... June 2015 The BMW Club Journal 19 The thing we needed to be in time for was the weekly service conducted by the Sama dancers. Known in the west as the Whirling Dervishes, this is not a performance, but a way of worship that goes back a thousand years or so. The turning puts the participant dancer into a semi-trance-like state. On the walk back to the hotel an interesting discussion was held among us, as two Christians, a Muslim, and an agnostic each got something different from what we had seen.

Sunday - Day 7

We had a later departure from Konya as we visited the Sama museum, over the road from our hotel, before we left. Our usual ‘gang of four’ became a ‘gang of three’ this year when Little did we know that ‘Josef’ had set up meetings with all his we failed to find a fourth like-minded person to come with us on customers using the same location and time so when we arrived our annual trek to Veterama, something we’ve now undertaken a little early we were surprised to find just how many people were for around 16 years. The drawing was first made in 1935 and showed various updates to 1942 and even its arrival in Eisenach. An interesting piece of BMW history and one that showed how careful the factory was to ensure not only that they had a quality product but one where the best material had always been specified for its manufacture as shown by the continual updating process as materials improved. There didn’t seem to be so many complete machines for sale this year. We saw a number of BMWs from the Rumanian restorer now living in Germany, cosmetically restored to a high standard as usual but, once again, not necessarily technically correct in every detail. Mechanically? Well who knows? What is likely however is that most of these machines originated in the old Eastern block countries and as such have had a very hard life. An Italian restoration company had an example of the very rare R39 (1925 250cc Single), once again restored (cosmetically) to a very good standard, up for sale at €30,000. A figure that seemed appropriate for its rarity value, assuming the mechanical condition matched the rest of the restoration. I suspect it’s a great machine to have in a collection, if a little impractical (8.5bhp) to actually use! As early as 10am on Sunday morning some of the stalls were packed and leaving. We had a final walk past those remaining before we ourselves left at just after 2pm. As I’ve said in previous reports the bargains get less each time we go.....or maybe it’s just because we’ve already bought most of the bits needed for our restorations in previous years? We’ll be back at Veterama again next October as usual I suspect......
