Dabei hatte das Jahr so schön begonnen: Herr Kuhn und ich waren im März in Namibia unterwegs und wir hörten nur wenig von dem üblichen Gemurmel und Geraune oder pessimistische „Zukunftsperspektiven“. Allgemein waren die Menschen mit sich und den Mitmenschen zufrieden. Es gab hier und dort politische Unzufriedenheit, die aber nicht das ganze Land in Aufregung versetzte. Vier Wochen später erhielten wir die Nachricht, dass am Morgen des 15. April 2019 um 7:45 Uhr – an meinem Geburtstag – EC Mueller, unser langjähriger Freund und Weggefährte, erschossen worden sei. Nicht nur er, sondern auch sein Stellvertreter im Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology waren Opfer eines brutalen Mordanschlags geworden. Wir alle konnten es nicht fassen, von wem und aus welchen Motiven eine solch feige Tat begangen werden konnte.

RU indicated that the Study should not focus solely on Arandis, but should also incorporate other communities of interest. This guidance, and a preliminary assessment, led to the identification of five communities: Arandis, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, which already have strong economic ties with RU, and where the RU workforce resides; Usakos, which is to be considered in terms of its suitability for accommodating the workforce, and the Spitzkoppe/small-scale mining community. The latter was included because of its marginalised status in the centre of uranium mining activities, and because of the links it has with RU through the work of the Rössing Foundation. The two chapters dealing with the developmental context of RU from a national and regional perspective show that the mineral sector, especially in view of the increase in uranium mining, will be a major contributor to economic growth in the country and in the Erongo Region. Unemployment in Namibia is high, as are poverty levels in parts of the country, particularly in the rural and labour-sending areas.

Bei diesem Korpus handelt es sich um eine neue digitale Ressource, die den Sprachgebrauch der deutschsprachigen Minderheit in Namibia sowie die zugehörigen Spracheinstellungen umfassend und systematisch dokumentiert. Wir beschreiben die Datenerhebung und die dabei angewandten Methoden (freie Gespräche, „Sprachsituationen“, semi-strukturierte Interviews), die Datenaufbereitung inklusive Transkription, Normalisierung und Tagging sowie die Eigenschaften des verfügbaren Korpus (Umfang, verfügbare Metadaten usw.) und einige grundlegende Funktionalitäten im Rahmen der DGD.
