The present study has been based as far as possible on primary sources such as protocols, letters, legal documents, and articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers from the nineteenth century. A contextual-comparative approach was employed to evaluate the objectivity of a given source. Secondary sources have also been consulted for interpretation and as corroborating evidence, especially when no primary sources were available. The study concludes that the Pietist revival ignited by the Norwegian Lutheran lay preacher, Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824), represented the culmination of the sixteenth- century Reformation in Norway, and the forerunner of the Adventist movement in that country.

This may or may not be referred to as a revolution in the future. The recent so-called Arab spring of 2011 is seen as a revolution in the Middle East and Northern Africa, and is compared to the Spring of Nations of 1848. In the newsfeeds concerning these events, one country has triggered my attention. In Morocco, demonstrations started. After the king decided on constitutional changes, the worst discontent seemed to have died down. This situation seems to be comparable to the constitutional changes in the Netherlands in 1848, or the calm in Sweden countries, which seem to have remained largely unaffected by the revolutionary wave in Europe. The question raised by this is: How was it possible that some nations were able to stay clear of the revolution that was going on around them? The revolution of 1848 was a special revolution in many cases. Unlike other revolutions it was preceded by a period of, mainly internal, unrest.

The gerente Elizalde asked what was to be done with pagarées of various people which would shortly fall due. Peña said, “Get the money”; I replied, “That is more easily said than done, and after some talking we came to the natural conclusion to authorize the gerente to do the best he could in conjunction with the Director de Turno. Moscoso Melgar was chosen President, Michael Carrol Vice. Before we had risen I was called to the Banco de Lima. Lembcke presented himself, and laid before us the closing entries in the books, which could not be made without the authorization of the Directory. Several decidedly bad debts were written off to Profit and Loss account, to the debit of which account were likewise carried heavy sums for premiums paid and commissions charged by the London Bankers, and for charges – in Spanish “Gastos Generales” – not less a sum than S/59,000 of which more than S/10,000 for patente and stamp duty, and S/9600 to the two gerentes.

Default and Imprisonment for Debt in Sweden: From the Lost Chances of a Ruined Life to the ∗ Lost Capital of a Bankrupt Company Karl Gratzer Although borrowing and lending have been important themes in Swedish economic history research, the special subject of the insolvent debtor has received no systematic attention. The history of credit is as long as human history and predates the use of money. It has been argued that money was introduced because of the need to measure and pay debts (Kilpi 1998). The word credit itself is derived from the Latin word credere, to believe, to put confidence in someone, to trust someone. Credit stands for a person’s ability (the trust one person possesses) to sell a promise to repay in the future so that he or she can make purchases in the present. To give credit means to transfer the property rights to a given object (e.g., an amount of money) in exchange for a claim on specified objects (e.g., certain sums of money) at specified points in time in the future. To take credit, to become a debtor, is the other side of the coin (Conant 1899, Baltensperger 1987). When a person applies for credit, lends money, etc., he or she enters into some form of contractual arrangement.1 These contracts can be verbal or written. All credit transactions involve the risk that the debtor may fail to honor his or her financial obligation. If the repayment is not made, the debtor is declared to be in default. By not delivering those property rights as prom- ised, the debtor violates one of the most fundamental contracts of the econ- omy (Stiefel 2005).

Journal of Alternative Perspectives in the Social Sciences (2020) Volume 10 No 4, 691-700 An Introduction to State Orders of Chivalry in the Nordic Nations Oskar Aanmoen, Historian University of Oslo (Oslo, Norway) Abstract: The most famous orders of chivalry in the world belong to the great European powers such as Great Britain and Spain. The Nordic nations also have such orders of chivalry, although they are probably relatively unknown to the people living outside Northern Europe. In this article, I hope to be able to give the non-Nordic resident an introduction to the most central Nordic state-ruled orders of chivalry. I will emphasize the knighthoods in the three Scandinavian monarchies Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but I will also mention some aspects of the knighthoods of the territories of these nations and the two Nordic republics Iceland and Finland. 1. Introduction The Viking Age was the golden age of Northern Europe. At that time, the Scandinavian monarchies were some of the most powerful nations in Europe. After these nations were Christianized around the year 900/1000 AD, the nation's warrior fort became part of history. The nations of the north quickly became part of Europe's peripheral outpost. A collection of small, rather poor monarchies. This meant that orders of chivalry were something that came relatively late to the Nordic nations. Although the monarchs who ruled over the nations often received orders of chivalry from other nations, even no orders of chivalry they ruled over. It is important to keep in mind that in the period 1387-1523 all the Nordic nations and territories were united under the Kalmar Union and it can therefore be said that orders that existed during this 691 An Introduction to State Orders of Chivalry in the Nordic Nations period were valid in all the Nordic kingdoms.

Money in Sweden – from Gustav Vasa until Today The sovereigns of the Scandinavian kingdoms began to mint "national" coins about 1000 AD. Initially, a significant coinage system could only develop in Denmark, however. In Sweden and Norway, the minting of coins was soon given up again. Sweden resumed coinage after the middle of the 12th century. The pennings (pennies) issued then were so thin and fragile that they could not have played a significant role in economy; notwithstanding over the following decades, they slowly but surely became objects of daily use even in northern Scandinavia. It took another century before the Swedish economy developed a need for multiple pennings. These so- called örtugar (singular: örtug) remained the major Swedish coins until the alliance with Denmark in the Kalmar Union in 1397. From then on, Swedish coins were minted in the name of the Danish kings. When Sweden became independent under Gustav I Vasa in 1523, a regular monetary system was developed. Danish Royal Ancestry
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY DANISH ROYAL ANCESTRY INTRODUCTION Our Danish ancestry is quite comprehensive as it coves a broad range of the history. This presentation is laid out in three different parts. Three lists are included of our ancestors and of our distant cousins. The lists show just one of several paths between the earliest and the present generation. Additional biographical text is included regarding several ancestors; the lists are highlighted when these persons are referred to in the text. The text is mostly from the Internet Wikipedia source and edited for simplicity. The advantage of this is that this text has a language link so the reader can readily see the information in any other language. The first part has our direct ancestors and begins by the Norse/Danish mythical ancestry from King Skjöldr, the son of Odin. That early Norse mythology is covered in the books about our Swedish and Norwegian ancestry. Odin gave Sweden to his son Yngvi and Denmark to his son Skjöldr. Since then the kings of Sweden were called Ynglings and those of Denmark Skjöldungs (Scyldings). This part blends from the mythical era into the Viking era. The distinction between the two eras cannot be clearly defined, in some cases it is obvious in others it must be left to the imagination. Ragnar Lodebrok was one of the important Vikings, he invaded even Paris. His son Sigurd is the forefather of the Danes, his son Björn of the Swedes. The direct lineage with us ends at the time when the Christianity took hold and replaced the Viking era.
