Ursus did not long hold this post. He was deposed after the capture of Benevento by the Byzantine strategos of Calabria, Sybbaticius. Benevento became, albeit briefly, the capital of the thema of Langobardia. Les actes de ce congrès intitulé « Saint Mayeul et son temps » furent publiés en 1997. Naturellement il fut question des origines paternelles et maternelles de notre saint, qu’évoqua notamment le RP Jean de la Croix Bouton o.c.s.o (historien, abbaye d'Aiguebelle) dans sa communication intitulée « La fondation du prieuré de Valensole (Maison paternelle de St Mayeul). Je cite (p 54 des Actes) : "Les possessions de Folcherius, père de Mayeul et fils d'un autre Folcherius, sont connues grâce à trois chartes de Cluny, les chartes n° 105, 106 et 107. Le 3 septembre, Raymonde petite fille de Mayeul 1er et belle sœur de d'Arbald III, d'une famille mâconnaise venue s'établir dans le pays d'Apt, avait épousée en Avignon Fulchérius, riche propriétaire du pays d'Apt. Déjà en 852 le grand père de Fulcherius, Robert, possédait une grande partie du territoire situé au pagus Albionensis au nord d'Apt (in cartulaire d'Apt, p 65 et 68). A l'occasion de son mariage, Folcherius, avec le consentement de ses frères Rainoard et Gérard, fit don à sa femme de plus de cent manses, soit au moins 1500 hectares dans les régions d'Apt, Aix, Sisteron et Riez. Nòtas abbatial clunisien, fut l'un des plus importants du Moyen Âge et persista au Puy et à Souvigny jusuq’à la Révolution. En 916, des troubles importants embrasent la Provence, lutte contre les Sarrasins et guerres féodales entre les princes(conflits entre les familles aristocratiques provençales et les familles bourguignonnes amenées en Provence en 911 par Hugues Capet). C’est ainsi que la fille du vicomte de Narbonne, Raymonde, accompagnée de son fils Mayeul, se réfugie dans le Mâconnais auprès de son frère le vicomte de Mâcon Albéric Ier. Mayeul entre dans le clergé séculier, étudie à Lyon, devient ensuite chanoine de la cathédrale Saint-Vincent de Mâcon, puis archidiacre à vingt et un ans. En 930, il refuse l’archevêché de Besançon. Ce n'est que dix ans plus tard qu'il rentre comme moine à Cluny, où il prononce ses voeux en 943 ou 944. Il exerce alors la fonction d'«armarius » (garde des livres et maître des cérémonies). En 948, l'abbé Aymard de Cluny devenu aveugle, lui laisse diriger le monastère comme coadjuteur. Aymard démissionne de sa charge d'abbé en 954, ouvrant 40 ans d'abbatiat à Mayeul. Ses bonnes relations avec Adélaïde, sœur du roi de Bourgogne Conrad le Pacifique (937-993) et épouse du roi de Germanie Otton 1er, empereur dès 962, lui confèrent une certaine influence tant à sa cour qu'à celle de son fils Otton II. Il intervient jusque dans des querelles privées de la famille impériale, ce qui lui valut de se voir proposer le siège pontifical après la mort de Benoît VI et de Benoît VII, siège qu'il refusa, se jugeant plus utile au milieu de ses moines. Les liens avec l'Empire favorisèrent l'extension de l'"Ecclesia Cluniacensis" vers l'est. Il fut certainement l'un des conseillers de Hugues le Grand, duc des Francs, ce qui lui permit de réformer des monastères et d'y placer des abbés réguliers.

It is also positive to see how some constants of the COAC and, by extension, of Catalan architects, have continued throughout inevitable changes. These are values such as the will to undertake the responsibility for constructing a quality environment for our fellow citizens, with social and cultural commitment, incorporating the requirements and needs produced by the rapid transformation of lifestyles and technological means. Since 1874, first the Associació d’Arquitectes de Catalunya and then the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya have brought together the architectural profession, becoming its public representative and a link between citizens, professionals and architecture. With the opening of the building in Barcelona’s Plaça Nova, 50 years ago now, these roles acquired a new dimension.     Introduction The records listed in this volume are what might be described as central records of the College – the minute books, the registers, the statutes and similar material, generated directly by the Provost and Fellows and the New Governing Body. There are, however, equally central records listed elsewhere. The Foundation and Consolidation Charters, and other royal charters, were listed by Noel Blakiston as ECR 39. He included other central records, particularly relating to the building of the College, in ECR 38 and ECR 49. Accounting records to 1642, including the audit rolls up to 1505, when they were replaced by books, are listed as ECR 61 and later accounting records as ECR 62. Papers produced by individual Provosts, Vice-Provosts and Fellows (though there are very few of this last category) will be found as COLL/P, COLL/VP or COLL/FELL as appropriate. The papers of officers such as the Bursar (COLL/B), Registrar(COLL/REG) and other College servants are also separately listed. The catalogue of the College’s archives (now COLL/ARCH/1) compiled in 1724 by Thomas Martin (1697 – 1771) mentions the central records that existed at the time but does not list them individually. Binding, indexing and annotation of the registers in particular show clearly that their importance and value were recognised. Seal books, minute books and lease books were also carefully preserved. However, unbound papers were less well served by a storage system that was essentially organised by estate and were allowed to accumulate in considerable confusion until very roughly sorted by Noel Blakiston into boxes covering ten year periods.

The picturesqueness and scenic beauty of Carisbrooke—due in large measure to the denudation of the chalk, which commenced long before the separation of this area from the mainland—contribute far less to render it the glory of the Isle of Wight than do its historic associations and remains. These probably constitute the chief attraction of the place to the educated visitors who come to it in increasing numbers year by year, not only from every part of Great Britain and Ireland, but also from the continent of Europe and other quarters of the earth. The responsibility of all who are inhabitants of the Isle of Wight, and more particularly of those who reside in the parish of Carisbrooke is very great, since they are the custodians and trustees of these historic monuments for the whole of the civilised world. The Carisbrooke of mediaeval times is gone forever and its traces cannot be recovered. Imagination must be left to picture the metropolis of the Isle of Wight in those days with its market and its fair, its bullring, its maypole and its timbered houses standing on the slopes of the valley in the depths of which the silvery chalk stream meandered, with its mills and mill-ponds, and, on the heights, the wooded hills crowned, to the south by the noble castle and, to the north, by the stately church and priory. All that can be done is to see that no further loss is incurred.

The blockade has received modest attention in the historiography of the First World War, despite the assertion in the British official history that extreme privation and hunger resulted in more than 750,000 German civilian deaths.
