De Garagemannen Van 'Pimp My Ride'
De MTV-tv-serie ‘Pimp My Ride’, over het omtoveren van oude roestige auto’s in glimmende pooierbakken, maakte ‘pimpen’ tot een trend. It outlines a process of responsive engagement with youth that revealed a skilled and economic scene that challenges standard conceptions of artistic expression. 'Cruising' with youth and plotting their sites of activity using Google Maps identified an extensive, largely overlooked market and encouraged a renewed discussion about what constituted the city's creative strengths and assets. Smooth Operator?’ the Propaganda Model and Moments of Crisis
‘Smooth Operator?’ The Propaganda Model and Moments of Crisis Des Freedman Goldsmiths, University of London Keywords : Propaganda model, Iraq War, Tabloids, Daily Mirror Abstract The propaganda model is a powerful tool for explaining systematic flaws in media coverage. But does it explain the cracks and tensions within the commercial media that are capable of arising at moments of political crisis and elite disagreement? To what extent does the model privilege a flawless structuralist account of media power at the expense of focusing on contradictory dynamics inside the capitalist media? This article looks at a key moment where critical media content was generated by a mainstream media organization: the coverage of the run-up to the Iraq War in the British tabloid paper, the Daily Mirror in 2003. It reflects on the consequences of such a moment for resisting corporate media power and asks whether it suggests the need for a revision of the propaganda model or, rather, provides further validation of its relevance. What is a ‘moment’? A situation whose duration may be longer or shorter but which is distinguished from the process that leads up to it in that it forces together the essential tendencies of that process, and demands that a decision be taken over the future direction of the process . That is to say the tendencies reach a sort of zenith, and depending on how the situation concerned is handled, the process takes on a different direction after the ‘moment’ (Lukacs 2000, 55). The propaganda model (PM), as developed initially by Herman and Chomsky (1988), is a powerful reminder that the mainstream media are a crucial tool for legitimizing the ideas of the most powerful social actors and for securing consent for their actions. -
Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness
From Making Do to Making-Over: Reality TV and the Reinvention of Britishness RACHEL JENNINGS O YOU LIVE IN TRACK SUITS TO CONCEAL YOUR SAGGY TITS AND big bum? Do not despair—you can still go to the ball. If you Dare brave enough to face those scary godmothers Trinny and Susannah, they will tell you in no uncertain terms What Not to Wear. Do you suspect your garden may have inspired T. S. Eliot to write The Wasteland? No fear. The matey experts from Ground Force can transform it into a pastoral idyll in two days. Has your pokey, gloomy British house been stagnating on the market? Perhaps you need the infamous House Doctor to breeze through and eradicate both your personal history and personality with a few cans of magnolia. A significant proportion of British reality TV is in the makeover line, involving the rapid transformation of some facet of a person’s lifestyle through a process that blends fairytale themes with religious ritual. The subject (or victim) on each episode is a Cinderella character (hereafter referred to collectively as ‘‘Cindy,’’ whether an individual, couple, or family unit) who relinquishes existential responsibility and personal power to one or more authority figures. These fairy god- mothers (of both sexes) navigate Cindy through a battle to give up the past leading to her rebirth, frequently on the third or seventh day. It is easy to comprehend why makeover shows are a hit in the United States—they slot neatly into the American dream of con- stant reinvention of the self, played out on a moving frontier. -
The Restorative Justice Guide, 2Nd Edition
The Restorative Justice Guide, 2nd Edition Juvenile Detention Center 18th Judicial Circuit Court DuPage County, IL 1 . WHAT IS RESTORATIVE JUSTICE? In the dictionary, restore means to bring back to a former or original condition or to give back: return. This is different from retribution, which means a suitable return, esp. punishment, for what one has done. Our current criminal justice system is based on a retribution system. Restorative Justice seeks to identify crime as a break in relationships: to self, to family, to neighborhood, to community, and to the nation and society in general. Instead of retribution, Restorative Justice seeks to restore those relationships which have been broken due to crime or other inappropriate behaviors. There is a lot of restoration going on in our society and community. For example, certain old buildings, which have been determined to have historical or artistic value, are protected. The owners may not tear them down. Instead they are encouraged to fix them up and bring them back to their original condition. While some have said that we live in a throw away society (What does that mean to you?), some things are too valuable to just throw away. A very valuable American Girl doll or 1956 T-bird certainly are worth making new again! Even if you just casually channel surf on TV, you will find shows that focus on restoring things, or bringing them back to their original condition. HGTV, TLC, The Discovery Channel and PBS have shows like “This Old House”, “While You Were Out,” “Trading Spaces,” and “Pimp My Ride” which focus on fixing rooms, furniture, buildings, and cars. -

News Values on Instagram: a Comparative Study of International News

News values theory itself is subjected to critical examination, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. Using a mixed method that includes content analysis and topic modeling, the study investigates the major news topics most ‘liked’ by Instagram audiences and compares them with the topics most reported on by news organizations. The findings suggest that Instagram audiences prefer to consume general news, human-interest stories and other stories that are mainly positive in nature, unlike news on politics and other topics on which traditional news organizations tend to focus. Finally, the paper addresses the implications of the above findings. I Love New York: Does New York Love Me? By Shannon B. Campbell1, Steven S. Giannino, Chrystal R. China, Christopher S. Harris2 Abstract This article seeks to highlight reality television’s most popular rearticulation of the Jezebel and the Sapphire stereotypes while assessing its implications for African American women. Nearly eight decades after their inception in mass mediated culture, the Jezebel and Sapphire stereotypes have been reborn in the form of Tiffany Pollard, better known as “New York”, and her mother “Sister Patterson” (respectively). Television acts as a powerful socialization agent, and thus plays a significant role in how audiences shape their racially stratified and gendered world. -
