New Chelsea Restaurant From & Rebecca Mascarenhas

BACKGROUND Elystan Street opened on 27 September 2016 at 43 Elystan Street, Chelsea, London. Co-owners chef Phil Howard and restaurateur Rebecca Mascarenhas have transformed the site (formerly Restaurant) with Nelson Design Ltd, and have created a beautifully contemporary, light-filled space. The food at Elystan Street is modern European, with an emphasis on fine British ingredients. Phil spent the last 25 years as chef-patron of (sold in March 2016), and, with Rebecca, also owns Kitchen W8 in Kensington (one Michelin star), and Sonny’s Kitchen in Barnes.

DRINKS LIST The international list has been assembled by Sommelier Yann Prigent and comprises 200 bins, with 19 by the glass from £7 and bottles from £26. Their pouring champagne is Billecart Salmon £12.50 a glass.

INTERIOR DESIGN The 64-seat dining room features chairs in two shades (air force blue and soft salmon), and sofa banquettes in teal leather. Tables are a mix of oak and concrete tops, and the lighting includes numerous resin spun pendants. Two walls feature almost floor-to-ceiling windows with café-style curtains, providing low-level privacy. Overall, the mood is light-filled and elegant, with a comfortable informality. The exterior of the restaurant has been transformed, painted in two tones of pale grey with a grey awning. Planters line the frontage with tall grasses.

PRIVATE DINING The 14-seat private dining room features a clever adaptable table and stools that can be raised or lowered to suit either a dining function or for more informal canapés and drinks. The table’s steel base is topped by white Corian, and there are long tubular lights made in marble.
