SEASON STARTS

The Flyers are trying to go to 3-0 on a season for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Their last 4-0 start came in 1995-96.

The last time the Flyers started a season with four consecutive home games was the 1974-75 campaign, when they went 2-2 over a four-game homestand from Oct. 10-17.

FLYERS VS. SABRES

This series is the first of eight games between the clubs this season. Six of them are part of two-game sets; the other two will be played as single contests, both in Philadelphia.

Mon. March 29 @ Buffalo Tue. March 30 @ Buffalo

Sun. April 11 vs. Buffalo

The Flyers and Sabres have never played more than six times in a season. They did so in each of the Sabres’ first two seasons in the league, 1970-71 and 1971-72. They have not met each other more than four times in a season since the 1978-79 campaign, when they played five times. The Flyers have beaten Buffalo twice in each of the last four seasons and at least twice in nine of the last 12 seasons.

This is also the first time the Flyers and Sabres have ever competed in the same division. Even upon Buffalo’s placement in the East Division when they joined the league in 1970, the Flyers remained in the West Division with the other five teams from the 1967 expansion. This structure remained in place until the realignment that came with the 1974 expansion, when the Flyers were placed in the Patrick Division and the Sabres in the Adams Division.

LAST GAME Friday, January 15, 2021 – Flyers 5, Pittsburgh 2 at Wells Fargo Center: Travis Konecny scored twice in the span of 1:59 en route to a hat trick and a 3-0 lead that the Flyers were able to convert into a 5-2 win. Konecny’s first goal came on the power play at the 7:27 mark and was followed up by an even-strength tally at 9:26. Ivan Provorov made it 3-0 2:04 after Konecny’s goal, giving the Flyers a 3-0 lead over the span of four minutes and three seconds. Pittsburgh trimmed the advantage back to one nearly as quickly, picking up goals 30 seconds apart from Sidney Crosby on the power play and Brandon Tanev at even strength, making it 3-2 with 6:29 left in the first period. The scoring then calmed down and the score went unchanged until nearly 13 minutes into the third period when Konecny added an insurance goal to complete his hat trick with 7:07 to play. Oskar Lindblom iced things with an empty-netter with 2:08 to go. Carter Hart took the win with 31 saves, while Tristan Jarry absorbed the loss after allowing three goals on six shots in 11:30 of action; Casey DeSmith came in from that point on and turned away 12 of 13 shots he faced in 47:30 of play. Stars of the Game: 1 –Travis Konecny; 2 – Carter Hart; 3 – Oskar Lindblom.

Travis Konecny recorded his first career hat trick, while adding an assist for a four-point game. It’s the first hat trick for a Flyer since James van Riemsdyk recorded one on March 15, 2019. It was the first at the Wells Fargo Center since Jan. 16, 2019 (Couturier vs. BOS) and the first against Pittsburgh since Jake Voracek had three goals on the road on Feb. 20, 2013.

Per NHL Stats &Information, this is the first time in franchise history that each of the Flyers’ first two games has seen one of their players record a four- point game. Joel Farabee had a goal and three assists for a four-point night on Wednesday.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

With their appearances in tonight’s game, Ivan Provorov and Claude Giroux will pass John LeClair for the second-longest consecutive game streaks in team history at 317. The three players sit behind only Rod Brind’Amour’s franchise record 484 games. Provorov’s streak is already a franchise record for longest streak from the start of a career.

Claude Giroux enters his ninth season as Flyers . He has now served in the role for 605 games, which is five short of the franchise high of 610 games served by Bobby Clarke over two terms. Giroux is currently slated to pass Clarke next Thursday, January 28 when the Flyers visit New Jersey.

Clarke first took over the Flyers’ captaincy 48 years ago yesterday on Jan. 17, 1973. He served 498 games through the end of the 1978-79 season before becoming a player-assistant coach from the start of the 1979-80 season until January 6, 1983, when he returned to the captaincy for the final 112 games of his career through the end of the 1983-84 season.

Giroux has appeared in 605 of a possible 610 games since taking over the captaincy in January of 2013 at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season; since that time, he is fourth in the league in points (575) and third in assists (396), and leads the league in power play points (233) while sitting second in power play assists (177).

Travis Konecny is among a handful of players leading the league with three goals and five overall points. He also is part of a group of forwards tied for the league lead among the position at plus-4.

The Flyers enter the season anticipating contributions from two key forwards who are making comebacks from significant medical hurdles last season. Oskar Lindblom has continued his recovery from a diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma in December of 2019. The treatment and recovery was forecast to sideline him the entire season with the possibility of a return at 2020 training camp, but the COVID-19 stoppage and subsequent delay in the 2020 Stanley Cup allowed him to recover in time to join the Flyers in the Toronto playoff bubble, where he made his return to the ice in Game 6 of the Second Round series vs. the .

Nolan Patrick is back in the Flyers lineup after missing the 2019-20 season due to a migraine disorder. Patrick was the second overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry and posted consecutive seasons of 30 and 31 points in his first two NHL campaigns.

The Flyers’ 2020-21 captaincy structure will see Sean Couturier serve as an alternate captain for all games, Ivan Provorov for home games, and Kevin Hayes and Jake Voracek in a rotating fashion for road games.
