Smith December 2020 Dissertation supervised by Linda A. Kinnahan This dissertation uses geocriticism to argue that the American railroad is best understood as a set of discursively constructed railspaces formed through a variety of viewpoints, a polysensorial awareness of space, and stratified social relationships and power struggles. This study takes up four railspaces, the constituent texts of which demonstrate how intertextual discourse shapes and is shaped by the railroad. The observation car, charted through California Zephyr advertisements and Muriel Rukeyser’s “Campaign,” is an apparatus that produces perpetual spectacle. Three novels—Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain, and Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith—and their filmic adaptations work together to form the passenger car as a contested railspace of fear and unease. The mobile Hell on Wheels that stations itself at the terminus of construction in the American West along the transcontinental railroad becomes a profanatory and deterritorializing railspace through Zane iv Grey’s The U.P. Trail. The photography of Andrew J. Russell and the poetry of C.S. Giscombe in Ohio Railroads and Prairie Style develop a deep map of the railroad right-of-way in the style of William Least Heat-Moon’s PraryErth: A Deep Map. This map uncovers marginalized racial memory and locality along the tracks. This project concludes with an echo of the introduction, geocritically exploring Penn Station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and how to move toward a geopraxis of public humanities work. v DEDICATION For Jamie vi ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This dissertation was written with steadfast guidance by my committee. This dissertation was written in conference rooms and cubicles and cafeteria tables on lunch breaks. All thanks goes to my employers who permitted my use of these spaces, most notably La Roche College and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Mike Andreola mentored me as a fundraiser and allowed me to pack my office space with bookshelves that contained nary a book about the development sector. The leadership at the Trust—Kevin McMahon, Rona Nesbit, Nick Gigante, and most importantly my supervisor, Kimberly Mauersberg—encouraged me and allowed me to grow into my position, knowing that I perpetually had a portion of my mind vii rooted in my research. The Trust staff was ceaselessly supportive of my work as well. The opening scene of my introduction is an ode to the work we are accomplishing in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. This dissertation was written with the analytical and compositional tools I honed throughout my education. My high school teachers never gave up on me. Jim Carta was particularly tenacious in his guidance even after I…creatively re-imagined my report card and stubbornly refused to read Testament of Youth. My professors at Sacred Heart, including (but most certainly not limited to) Mike Ventimiglia, Steve Michels, and Michelle Loris, were vital in preparing me for graduate study, as was Sandra Young, who first asked, “why not go for your Ph.D.?” I am especially thankful for my advisor, Rick Magee, for guiding me through the graduate school application process. Larry Kinsel at GM Heritage Operations gave me valuable insight about the railroad advertisements used in chapter one.     Book reviews: Ashbridge 271 Robert T. Tally Jr and Christine M. Battista (eds) (2016) Ecocriticism and Geocriticism: Overlapping Territories in Environmental and Literary Studies. Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan. xii + 214pp., £58 (hardback), ISBN 981137553676. Despite longstanding examination of the environment in literary studies, ‘spatiality’ in its broadest sense continues to be an emergent area of enquiry for scholars of literature. Within the arts and humanities, geographers including David Harvey, Doreen Massey and Edward W. Soja, (all of whom influence essays in Ecocriticism and Geocriticism), have done much to pioneer the intricate relationship between the social and the spatial, an association best summarised in what Soja terms the ‘socio-spatial dialectic’ (Soja 1980: 207). The practice of spatial literary studies concerns not only literary representation of place and environment but pays equal attention to accounts of the psychological experience of space and (dis)placement. While psychogeographers have attempted to bridge the gap between spatial and symbolic experience since the ‘spatial turn’, the collection addresses the timely need for the convergence of critical practices attuned to both environmental and geocritical relations. A recent aspect of the wider discipline of spatial studies has been the focus on postmodern, socially- produced space—including human experience and subjectivity, the poetics of everyday life, and socio- economic manifestations of spatiality— in addition to the notion of a material sense of ‘place’ and ‘placedness’. Robert T. Tally Jr and Chrstine Battista’s collection attempts to overcome this disjuncture between ecocriticism and geocriticism. While geocriticism is principally orientated towards physical ‘space, place and mapping’ (2), owing much to the intellectual pedigree of cultural geographers and situationist thinkers Henri Lefebvre and Michel Foucault, in addition to those mentioned above, ecocriticism’s principal concern is the environment and its effect on human experience.

Asked about his preoccupation with the supernat- ural, McPherson intimated, “I remember when I was a little kid, I was always interested in ghosts and scary things. If I want to rationalize it, it’s probably a search for God.” This quest led him to theater. “There’s something so religious about the theatre,” he stated. We’re all sitting there in the dark, and there’s some- thing about how the stage glows in the darkness, which is such a beautiful pic- ture of human existence.     Woody Guthrie Annual, 4 (2018): Carney, “With Electric Breath” “With Electric Breath”: Bob Dylan and the Reimagining of Woody Guthrie (January 1968) Court Carney In 1956, police in New Jersey apprehended Woody Guthrie on the presumption of vagrancy. Then in his mid-40s, Guthrie would spend the next (and last) eleven years of his life in various hospitals: Greystone Park in New Jersey, Brooklyn State Hospital, and, finally, the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, where he died. Woody suffered since the late 1940s when the symptoms of Huntington’s disease first appeared—symptoms that were often confused with alcoholism or mental instability. As Guthrie disappeared from public view in the late 1950s, 1,300 miles away, Bob Dylan was in Hibbing, Minnesota, learning to play doo-wop and Little Richard covers. 1 Young Dylan was about to have his career path illuminated after attending one of Buddy Holly’s final shows. By the time Dylan reached New York in 1961, heavily under the influence of Woody’s music, Guthrie had been hospitalized for almost five years and with his motor skills greatly deteriorated. This meeting between the still stylistically unformed Dylan and Woody—far removed from his 1940s heyday—had the makings of myth, regardless of the blurred details. Whatever transpired between them, the pilgrimage to Woody transfixed Dylan, and the young Minnesotan would go on to model his early career on the elder songwriter’s legacy. More than any other of Woody’s acolytes, Dylan grasped the totality of Guthrie’s vision. Beyond mimicry (and Dylan carefully emulated Woody’s accent, mannerisms, and poses), Dylan almost preternaturally understood the larger implication of Guthrie in ways that eluded other singers and writers at the time.2 As his career took off, however, Dylan began to slough off the more obvious Guthrieisms as he moved towards his electric-charged poetry of 1965-1966.

The song makes for a vivid case study in Dylanesque reinvention: over nearly 800 performances, Dylan has played it solo and with a band (acoustic and electric); in five different keys; in diverse meters and tempos; and in arrangements that index a dizzying array of genres (folk, blues, country, rockabilly, soul, arena rock, etc.). This is to say nothing of the countless performative inflections in each evening’s rendering, especially in Dylan’s singing, which varies widely as regards phrasing, rhythm, pitch, articulation, and timbre. How can music theorists engage analytically with such a moving target, and what insights into Dylan’s music and its meanings might such a study reveal? The present article proposes one set of answers to these questions. First, by deploying a range of analytical techniques—from spectrographic analysis to schema theory—it demonstrates that the analytical challenges raised by Dylan’s performances are not as insurmountable as they might at first appear, especially when approached with a strategic and flexible methodological pluralism.
