First published in 1793, the work is widely considered to be a classic of British Caribbean literature. This article introduces an unpublished first draft of Edwards’s preface to that work. Housed in the archives of the West India Committee in Westminster, England, this preface has never been published or fully analyzed by scholars in print. It offers valuable insight into the production of West Indian history at the end of the eighteenth century. In particular, it shows how colonial planters confronted the challenges of their day by attempting to wrest the practice of writing West Indian history from their critics in Great Britain. Unlike these metropolitan writers, Edwards had lived in the West Indian colonies for many years. He positioned his personal experience as being a primary source of his historical legitimacy.     Historical Origins of the One-Drop Racial Rule in the United States Winthrop D. Jordan1 Edited by Paul Spickard2 Editor’s Note Winthrop Jordan was one of the most honored US historians of the second half of the twentieth century. His subjects were race, gender, sex, slavery, and religion, and he wrote almost exclusively about the early centuries of American history. One of his first published articles, “American Chiaroscuro: The Status and Definition of Mulattoes in the British Colonies” (1962), may be considered an intellectual forerunner of multiracial studies, as it described the high degree of social and sexual mixing that occurred in the early centuries between Africans and Europeans in what later became the United States, and hinted at the subtle racial positionings of mixed people in those years.3 Jordan’s first book, White over Black: American Attitudes Toward the Negro, 1550–1812, was published in 1968 at the height of the Civil Rights Movement era. The product of years of painstaking archival research, attentive to the nuances of the thousands of documents that are its sources, and written in sparkling prose, White over Black showed as no previous book had done the subtle psycho-social origins of the American racial caste system.4 It won the National Book Award, the Ralph Waldo Emerson Prize, the Bancroft Prize, the Parkman Prize, and other honors. It has never been out of print since, and it remains a staple of the graduate school curriculum for American historians and scholars of ethnic studies. In 2005, the eminent public intellectual Gerald Early, at the request of the African American magazine American Legacy, listed what he believed to be the ten most influential books on African American history.

Both inter- and intraspecific studies have focused largely on mating systems in which females choose their social mates, and less is known about extra-group paternity in polygynous systems in which social mates are largely dictated by male-male competition. In this study, we examine the frequency and distribution of extra-group paternity in a harem-forming bat, Phyllostomus hastatus. We find that despite aggres- sive harem defense, males are unable to fully monopolize reproduction within their harem and over 70% of harems contain extra- group offspring. Harem males in better body condition suffered less paternity loss, but we found no effect of male age or body size. Even though the age and size of individual females did not predict offspring paternity, we found a significant effect of age heterogeneity within the group. Harems composed of differently aged females were more likely to contain extra-group offspring. Our results not only provide evidence for the role of male defense in preventing extra-group paternity but also suggest that social group composition has consequences for male reproductive success.

These are medium sized species of bats, which weigh between 40-60g and grow to a length of 75-85mm with a wing span that varies between 48-67mm. The back of their body is covered with an ashy shade of brown, greyish or black, short, soft, pleasant smelling fur with white hair roots that gives the bat a faintly hoary (frosted) appearance (Fig. 1). Their ventral underfur is usually paler in colour than its dorsal underfur and back fur (Rafferty 2011). Their genus is recognized by their four pale white facial stripes above and below their eyes (Fleming et al. 1972). Their wings are broad and displays a dark grey or black colour. They have an interfemoral membrane that is thin, hairless and has a short calcar. They have a protruding nose leaf and lacks an external tail. Their ears are small, pointed and rigid with a jagged tragus. Their bottom lip is covered in warts and has a large one in the middle (Ortega and Castro-Arellano 2001). Both the bottom and top lips of the Jamaican fruit bat has sebaceous glands (Dalquest et al. 1952). Both males and females are alike (Morrison 2011).
