An Investigation of the Geology and Gold Mineralization in the Nyac District, Southwest Alaska By Zachary John Wenz BLM Open File Report 103 November 2005 U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management Alaska State Office 222 W. 7th Ave., #13 Anchorage AK 99513 i Abstract The Nyac district, southwest Alaska, contains multiple felsic to mafic plutons and dikes intruding the volcano-sedimentary package of the Nyac terrane. Dated plutons and dikes in the Nyac terrane record Early Cretaceous ages; other plutons in southwest Alaska are Late Cretaceous and Tertiary. The Nyac district contains high-temperature and low-temperature gold mineralization. The age of high-temperature and low-temperature mineralization is concordant with plutonism. The high-temperature mineralization occurs in the Bonanza pluton and associated gray granodiorite porphyry dikes. Bonanza pluton mineralization consists of gold-bearing quartz veins with pyrite-chalcopyrite-magnetite-bismuthinite- molybdenite. Fluid inclusions from mineralized quartz veins record trapping temperatures up to 560o C and salinities up to 60 wt% NaCl. Mineralization in the grey granodiorite porphyry dikes consists of gold- bearing quartz veins with tellurobismuthite-tetradymite-chalcopyrite. Fluid inclusions from mineralized o quartz veins record trapping temperatures up to 370 C, salinities up to 5 wt% NaCl, and CO2 concentrations up to 80 vol%. Both types display sericite-chlorite-albite alteration, and the Bonanza Pluton also displays potassic alteration. The low-temperature mineralization occurs at the Bonanza Creek Color Anomaly and along high-angle faults. This type contains anomalous Au and Hg. Visitor Services Project Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve Report Summary • This report describes part of the results of a visitor study at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve during July 12-18, 1995. A total of 531 questionnaires were distributed to visitors. Visitors returned 444 questionnaires for an 84% response rate. • This report profiles Wrangell-St. Elias visitors. A separate appendix contains visitors' comments about their visit; this report and the appendix include a summary of visitors' comments. • Fifty-five percent of the visitors were in family groups; 20% were in groups of friends. Forty-nine percent of Wrangell-St. Elias visitors were in groups of two. Most visitors (56%) were aged 26- 55. • Among Wrangell-St. Elias visitors, 11% were international visitors. Forty percent of those visitors were from Germany. United States visitors were from Alaska (31%), California (7%), Florida (5%) and 43 other states. • Almost two-thirds of Wrangell-St.

FERRIGNO U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY PROFESSIONAL PAPER 1386–K About 5 percent (about 75,000 km2) of Alaska is presently glacierized, including 11 mountain ranges, 1 large island, an island chain, and 1 archipelago. The total number of glaciers in Alaska is estimated at >100,000, including many active and former tidewater glaciers. Glaciers in every mountain range and island group are experiencing significant retreat, thinning, and (or) stagnation, especially those at lower elevations, a process that began by the middle of the 19th century. In southeastern Alaska and western Canada, 205 glaciers have a history of surging; in the same region, at least 53 present and 7 former large ice-dammed lakes have produced jökulhlaups (glacier-outburst floods). Ice-capped Alaska volcanoes also have the potential for jökulhlaups caused by subglacier volcanic and geothermal activity. Satellite remote sensing provides the only practical means of monitoring regional changes in glaciers in response to short- and long-term changes in the maritime and continental climates of Alaska. Geospatial analysis is used to define selected glaciological parameters in the eastern part of the Alaska Range.

    MINING IN THE LOWER COPPER RIVER BASIN, By FRED H. MOFFIT. COPPER MINING IN CHITINA VALLEY. INTRODUCTION. During the summer of 1916 the writer visited most of the copper prospects of Chitina Valley (PL X, p. 156) to study their geology and learn what progress had recently been made in their develop­ ment. The present activity of the copper market is reflected in the district by increased interest in prospecting for copper, and more particularly by the efforts of copper producers to maintain a maxi­ mum production of high-grade ore. No new mines that yielded a recorded output were opened in 1916, but shipments were made for the first time from a number of properties, some of which may become steady producers. The prospects will be described in the order in which they were visited, those in the western part of the field being considered first and those in the eastern part last. No attempt will be made to describe in detail all the prospects, nor is the space given to the description of any particular prospect an indication of its relative value. Some claims are described rather fully, because recent work on them has disclosed significant geologic facts or geologic relations, and one or two that have not been described before are described in detail.. The copper ores of the district extending from Kotsina River to Nizina are chiefly bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and oxidation products such as malachite, azurite, and covellite. Native copper, enargite, copper oxides, and some other copper-bearing minerals, among them tetrahedrite, are associated in places with the more common minerals first named.
