POSITION SUMMARY

Innovation Quarter, one of the leading innovation districts in the world and part of the Global Institute of Innovation Districts (GIID) is seeking a national leader to be our new Head of Innovation Quarter Labs (iQ Labs). This newly created position reports to Terry Hales, Senior Vice President and Executive Vice Chief Academic Officer, Administration & Operations, Wake Forest Baptist Health.

Key responsibilities include:

 Providing leadership and strategic direction of iQ Labs’ management and growth within the Innovation Quarter ecosystem.  Identification, prioritization, and evolvement of key iQ Labs sectors/areas of focus as part of a sustainable innovation Quarter Labs (iQ Labs) ecosystem.  Participation in maximizing the iQ Labs ecosystem assets (especially within and through the Wake Forest Baptist Health/ system) and leveraging the existing strengths to build new connections and partnerships, and determine gaps between what exists and what is desired in the noted ecosystem evolvement.  Optimizing asset mapping through a combination of collaboration with multiple stakeholders internally, as well as through external connections from our extended iQ Labs ecosystem of community & global business partners, academic and investor relationships.

INNOVATION QUARTER

Innovation Quarter a fast-developing mixed-use innovation district located in downtown Winston-Salem, NC, with a mission to drive economic growth and build vibrant community. The Innovation Quarter is an enterprise of Wake Forest Baptist Health, in collaboration with private developers, the City of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County.

As the heart of the region’s innovation ecosystem, the Innovation Quarter is home to more than 90 companies in advanced digital analytics, clinical research, regenerative medicine and more. In addition to the 3,600+ people working here, the Innovation Quarter is home to more than 1,400 degree-seeking students. Five different academic institutions have a presence here along with 1,100 residential units, making this a true “Live, Work, Learn, Play” community.

Innovation Quarter is also a founding member of the Global Institute of Innovation Districts (GIID), which recently recognized iQ as a “Best Practice for Creating Integrated Places.” “Innovation Quarter has shown the world that integrated places is not just a concept for one landmark building; it is the ambition to create mixed places for the majority of institution-led projects. In doing so, they have advanced the practice by leaps and bounds. The work of Innovation Quarter to create authentic, integrated places shows research universities and medical institutions around the world what it means to ‘lean in’ and create spaces where a diversity of people are welcome and can actively use.”

INNOVATION QUARTER LABS

More than just a real estate endeavor, the core mission of the Innovation Quarter is to act as a convener of people, organizations and companies seeking to innovate and bring new ideas and solutions to the market. In addition to the existing Innovation Quarter in Winston-Salem, effort is underway to create a high-tech corridor between Winston-Salem and Charlotte as part of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s strategic combination with Atrium Health.

This effort is culminated through our physical and virtual partnership hub, iQ Labs.

The role of iQ Labs is to bring together the expertise of our anchor academic institutions like Wake Forest School of Medicine, combining with commercial and consumer-minded partners and leveraging the power of our health system partners to test, refine, scale and rapidly deploy healthtech and other solutions. Facilitating these innovative efforts across the new high-tech corridor will be a key role for iQ Labs going forward.

Established in spring 2020, iQ Healthtech Labs is focused on the following sectors:

A physical and virtual strategic partnership hub, iQ Healthtech Labs leverages the unique, world-class intellectual anchors that exist within the Innovation Quarter and seeks to pair them with industry and commercial partners that have ideas they’re looking to advance into the marketplace.

Early partners in iQ Healthtech Labs include UPS Flight Forward, Oracle Life Sciences, Emtiro Health, Kitsbow and Medcost. iQ Community Labs iQ Community Labs is a partnership hub for ideating, developing and implementing breakthrough ideas in the space of health and social equity within and through Innovation Quarter anchor institutions.

The aim of iQ Community Labs will be to mobilize traditional and non-traditional commercial partners who want to make a difference in scaling solutions aimed at improving health and social equity, then partner them with community organizations that are already focused on creating targeted solutions. Similar to its sister effort, iQ Healthtech Labs, iQ Community Labs is organized based on sectors of focus specific to the needs of the Innovation Quarter’s surrounding community:

TERRY HALES

Terry L. Hales, Jr., MBA, is Terry Hales, Senior Vice President and Executive Vice Chief Academic Officer, Administration & Operations for Wake Forest Baptist Health.

Hales leads the team responsible for growing the Innovation Quarter. Hales was heavily involved in creating the initial master plan for the Innovation Quarter, then called the Research Park, from 2002-2012. In February 2018, he re-joined the Innovation Quarter team to lead planning for the next phase of development and creation of strategies for a sustainable innovation ecosystem.

Hales received a BSBA in Accounting from Appalachian State University in 1991, became a Certified Public Account in 1995, and received his MBA from in 2000.

Before coming to Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Hales held different accounting positions within both public accounting and industry.

In September 1996, Hales came to Wake Forest University School of Medicine as a senior financial planner. He accepted the position of assistant controller in March 1999, and was appointed assistant dean for finance in January 2001. Later that same year and concurrent with the creation of Wake Forest University Health Sciences, Hales was appointed to vice president for financial planning and chief financial officer.

In January 2010, with the formal integration of the Baptist and Wake Forest University Health Sciences finance function, Hales was named vice chief financial officer of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he served through March 2014.

Hales was named vice president, academic administration and operations in April 2014. In June of 2016, Hales was named vice president, academic administration and operations, and executive vice dean.

In addition to these roles, Hales is also assistant treasurer for Piedmont Triad Research Park and assistant treasurer for the Dialysis Corporations of Wake Forest University.

WAKE FOREST BAPTIST HEALTH

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WakeHealth.edu) is a nationally recognized academic medical center in Winston-Salem, N.C., with an integrated enterprise including educational and research facilities, , clinics, diagnostic centers, and other primary and specialty care facilities serving 24 counties in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia.

Wake Forest Baptist is comprised of: Wake Forest Baptist Health, a regional clinical system with close to 175 locations, 2,500 physicians and 1,535 acute care beds; Wake Forest School of Medicine; and Wake Forest Innovations, which promotes the commercialization of research discoveries and operates Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. Wake Forest Baptist Health’s clinical, research and educational programs are consistently ranked among the best in the country.

The Medical Center is the region’s only Level l trauma center, renowned for handling the region’s most complex medical cases. With clinical expertise in more than 100 specialties including cancer, cardiology, geriatrics, nephrology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, pediatrics and urology, patients from across the country rely on the Medical Center for quality health care and compassionate service. Brenner Children’s Hospital is located on the main campus and offers a full range of specialized pediatric services. It was the first Level l pediatric trauma center in North Carolina.

Wake Forest Baptist is a major research and innovation center, making important contributions to biomedical and health science research nationally and internationally. Wake Forest Innovations commercializes technology, products and services arising from the discoveries and scientific assets of the Medical Center and Wake Forest University.

This is a time of tremendous growth for our medical school and health system. In October, 2020, Wake Forest Baptist Health and Atrium Health officially joined together in a strategic combination, with the objective of creating the next generation academic health system. The new Atrium Health, Inc. enterprise will bring clinical expertise together with the research, innovation and the educational capabilities of these renowned institutions to revolutionize the ways people become and stay healthy, changing lives for the better for the more than 7 million people across the region who now have access to care from the combined organization. The enterprise will have over 70,000 teammates working together to provide personalized care for each of the 15 million patient interactions it has each year, fulfilling its mission to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing – for all.

As part of this new enterprise, Atrium Health Inc., has announced $3.4 billion in planned investments in Wake Forest Baptist Health and the communities we serve, including plans to develop a new Population Health Center in Winston-Salem. Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest School of Medicine will become the academic core of Atrium Health, building a second campus of the school of medicine in Charlotte, North Carolina. The growth of the school of medicine will expand existing academic research capabilities and opportunities for clinical trials across a large, diverse market with some of the nation’s leading medical experts.

With Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Wake Forest School of Medicine forming the academic core of the new Atrium Health enterprise, it is additionally committing nearly $600 million to advance Wake Forest Baptist’s academic mission and further elevate its national reputation. Included in this are a new $150 million academic endowment created to fund additional education and research growth and substantial $’s in Academic Enrichment Funds to accelerate academic initiatives. Expansion of educational programs, biomedical research, clinical trials and life-saving treatments that improve health are also planned.

WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA

Located in Forsyth County (population ≈376,000) in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, Winston-Salem is the state’s fifth largest city, featuring a moderate climate with all four seasons and a housing costs ≈34% below the national average. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Parkway are a 1-2 hour drive to the north and west, and North Carolina's beaches are close enough to enjoy during long weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 Lead the development and manage all applicable processes within iQ Labs to evaluate and assess key solutions that bring value to the Health System, the Innovation Quarter, its external partners and the local, Regional, State and National communities/ stages.  In appropriate partnership with the Health System innovation and academic innovation team, provide faculty and staff, and their departments, with business consulting and strategy to enable them to create new connections and partnerships in the areas of focused Lab & Innovation Sectors such as Population Health and Value- Health Transformation, Healthy Aging, Virtual Health, Personalized Care & Precision Medicine, and Learning & Experiential Systems. With a commitment to a collaboration and alignment, directly manage these opportunities when required and warranted by the size of the business.  Develop and maintain deep knowledge of internal faculty and staff, and their department assets and strategic goals, and link those objectives and goals across community and broader business organizations.  Participate in the development of the Innovation Quarter as the nucleus and gateway to access knowledge and resources in key iQ Labs and related sectors.  Orchestrate partnerships between our academic healthcare institution (traditional) and industry (non-traditional), leading to innovative product and process solutions.  Connect with and relate to appropriate contacts across industries, demonstrating the value of working with iQ Labs teams.  Work collaboratively as part of the Innovation Quarter leadership team with external stakeholders to build a business & partnership network.  As part of ensuring our evolving innovation eco-system, liaise with community entrepreneurial stakeholders to build an effective entrepreneurial ecosystem network  Develop and lead iQ labs evolution, identify strategic goals and execute a launch plan aligned with Enterprise innovation strategic plans.  Develop, implement, and lead long and short-term goals for iQ Labs and specific sectors, thus facilitating ecosystem development.  Provide leadership, recruitment and supervision of iQ Labs development and supporting teams.  Align internal activities and resources to foster iQ Labs growth strategies.  Build strong relationship with internal faculty and staff, and their departments, serving as the liaison between those teams and the iQ Labs Ecosystem.  Develop strategies to grow and expand iQ Labs as a subset of the larger Innovation Quarter ecosystem.  Develop and maintain a strong presence and network as a part of the Innovation Quarter ecosystem leadership team.  Be a trusted partner to internal and external iQ Labs & specific sector champions.  Develop and maintain deep knowledge of internal faculty and staff, and their department assets and strategic goals, and link those objective and goals across community and broader business organizations.  Participate in the development of our Innovation Ecosystem as the nucleus and gateway to access knowledge and resources in key iQ Labs and related sectors.

REQUIREMENTS

 Graduate Degree required. Doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, PharmD) a plus, but not required.  Substantial experience in strategic planning, due diligence, program development, customer relationship management, operations and change management.  Senior leadership and project management experience in healthcare related industries, e.g. health care, life science or healthcare information technology.  Demonstrated success in building new businesses or product lines from concept through growth to profitability.  Previous senior experience in both growth and service delivery to C-level executives  An in-depth knowledge of technology industry and innovative enterprise  Self-driven and growth oriented mindset, able to deliver high productivity  Strong understanding of the healthcare and technology industry trends and directions, and impacts and implications on the healthcare industry  Experience in analyzing a competitive value-based healthcare environment, and developing and implementing strategic recommendations for improved position in the healthcare industry  Ability to assess and oversee a portfolio of opportunities including concept testing, selection of products for further development, prototyping, scale-up planning and economic model development  Successfully managed teams in multiple functional areas, including physicians and other health professions  Outstanding sense for spotting new business opportunities  Ability to generate new ideas for business and business approaches to delivering new business  Experienced at deal making and creating strategic partnerships  Strong facilitation, consultation and convening skills and experience  Applied experience in implementing innovative solutions to technical challenges  Entrepreneurial approach to problem solving with strong process management skills  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and productive relationships  Excellent communicator, confidence in presenting to various audiences  Track record of success in business-to-business marketing in highly competitive industries
