EMPOWERING POTENTIAL

2019 ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2018 - JUNE 30, 2019

MESSAGE FROM CEO & BOARD CHAIR

Hane & Caleb

DEAR SUPPORTERS AND FRIENDS,

Thank you for caring about the youth in our community. Your diligent commitment has created pathways to possibilities for thousands of children who at one point thought unimaginable. Through partnerships, volunteerism, and financial stewardship, supporters like you make these one-to-one relationships flourish into lifelong friendships that changes a child’s trajectory for success. Jaliyah & Donna

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas our focus is prevention. We empower, enable and ignite the potential that resides within every child. Our vision is that all children achieve success. We do this by facilitating mentorship relationships that expose children to opportunities that will deter them from wanting to drop out of school; teaching them coping skills and confidence building exercises to help them avoid risky behaviors that could lead to juvenile detention; and providing them with tools, connections, and resources to begin to close the opportunity gap. We are working toward ending generational poverty for good.

Currently, we are serving over 1,400 children in three counties, but the need is so great! We continuously seek to collaborate with other agencies in the community to reach more children and broaden our impact. FY 2019 was a strong year and we are looking forward to an even brighter 2020!

Together we can Empower Potential!

10 OF BIG BROTHER THE YEAR BIG BROTHER ALEX & LITTLE BROTHER JAYDEN

When Jayden’s grandmother enrolled him in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in 2015, what she hoped for was a positive male role model. When Alex came into their lives, it was clear that he was going to be much more. Alex’s quick wit, ambitious nature, and positive personality impacts everyone around him. Alex has been not only a mentor to Jayden, but as Jayden fondly refers to him, his best friend. Alex was by Jayden’s side in the when his great-grandmother passed away. Alex has taken Jadeyn to dozens of sporting events, volunteered throughout our community with him, and challenged him with summer reading lists. Alex’s consistency and dependability helped create comfort and stability in Jayden’s life and Jayden’s grandmother is extremely grateful for their connection. Alex keeps Jayden focused by setting goals and celebrating his successes. Alex’s fondness of travel has opened Jayden’s eyes to new cultures and food and sparked Jayden’s curiosity about the world. He even eats seaweed now!

Alex’s influence on Jayden’s life reaches beyond his close- knit friendship with Jayden and his family, but also into his academic life. Although Alex loves to have fun with Jayden, it was critical for him to ensure Jayden receives the best possible education. With Alex’s support, Jayden was entered into a lottery for a sought after charter school and Jayden was accepted last year. Jayden now has access to new opportunities and organizations at his new school, building the foundation for his future success.
