The Ohio State University 2003 Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Eve Levin, Advisor Dr. Geoffrey Parker Advisor Dr. David Hoffmann Department of History Dr. Nicholas Breyfogle ABSTRACT The conquest of the Khanate of Kazan’ was a pivotal event in the development of Muscovy. Moscow gained possession over a previously independent political entity with a multiethnic and multiconfessional populace. The Muscovite political system adapted to the unique circumstances of its expanding frontier and prepared for the continuing expansion to its east through Siberia and to the south down to the Caspian port city of Astrakhan. Muscovy’s government attempted to incorporate quickly its new land and peoples within the preexisting structures of the state. Though Muscovy had been multiethnic from its origins, the Middle Volga Region introduced a sizeable Muslim population for the first time, an event of great import following the Muslim conquest of Constantinople in the previous century. Kazan’s social composition paralleled Moscow’s; the city and its environs contained elites, peasants, and slaves. While the Muslim elite quickly converted to Russian Orthodoxy to preserve their social status, much of the local population did not, leaving Moscow’s frontier populated with animists and Muslims, who had stronger cultural connections to their nomadic neighbors than their Orthodox rulers. The state had two major goals for the Middle Volga Region. -

He wrote the article on the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in OPREE Vol . 1, No . 7 (December , 1981). He wrote a book on the Russian Orthodox Church in Danish in 1950, and one entitled Theological Study in the Russian and Bulgarian Orthodox Churches under Communist Rule (London : The Faith Press, 1963). In addition he has written a few articles on Romanian , Russian , and Bulgarian Orthodox Churches in the Journal of Ecumenical Studies as well as articles in Diakonia. He has worked extensively with the typescripts of licentiates ' and masters ' theses of Russian Orthodox authors , una va ilable to the general public. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE UDK Izvorni znanstveni rad RELIGION AND CHURCH IN THE USTASHA IDEOLOGY (1941-1945) Irina OGNYANOVA The article deals with the problem regarding the position of religion and Church in the Ustasha ideological system, which is insuffi ciently explored in contemporary historiography. Between Catholicism and the Croatian nationalism existed a strong historical connection. It was expli- citly expressed in the extreme forms of the Croatian nationalism, such as in the Ustashas mo- vement. Nationalism and Catholicism were not only two basic, but also closely tied ideas in- corporated in their ideological system. This topic is partially elaborated in historiography, but still there is no a single monograph dedicated to it. Particularly disputable problems in histo- rical literature are also those about the role of the Catholic Church in the Independent State of Croatia (ISC) and its relationship towards Ustashas’ nationalism, and those about relationship between Vatican and the Croatian authorities in the period between 1941 and 1945. The Role of Religion in the Croatian Nationalism – mid 19th – mid 20th Centuries The Croatian nationalism of the nineteenth century was civil (laic) by character. It deter- mined the Croatian nation on the basis of ethnos, language, state territory, history, cul- ture, etc. and it was similar to the classic European nationalism from the period1. The fi rst Croatian national ideology, so-called ilirizam in the 1830s was a prototype of the Yugoslavism. -

Abstract This thesis contributes to an in-depth understanding of the concept of soft power, which according to Joseph Nye indicates the ability to achieve foreign policy goals through cultural attraction. For the purposes of this study of Russian cultural influence in Ukraine, soft power is rearticulated to highlight the ability to engage in mean-making and cultural- ideational leadership on the international stage. A critique of Nye justifies a reframing of soft power, which is supplied by drawing on the analytical power of post-Marxist hegemony and discourse theory. The methodology through which this concept is operationalised empirically emphasises outcomes over inputs, thus appraisals of soft power must account for whether the discourses promoted by mean-making initiatives resonate favourably with target audiences. -

Chertok ch1 12/21/04 11:27 AM Page 1 Chapter 1 Introduction: A Debt to My Generation On 1 March 2002, I turned ninety. On that occasion, many people not only congratulated me and wished me health and prosperity, but also insisted that I continue my literary work on the history of rocket-space science and technology.1 I was eighty years old when I had the audacity to think that I possessed not only waning engineering capabilities, but also literary skills sufficient to tell about “the times and about myself.” I began to work in this field in the hope that Fate’s goodwill would allow my idea to be realized. Due to my literary inexperience, I assumed that memoirs on the establishment and development of aviation and, subsequently, rocket-space technology and the people who created it could be limited to a single book of no more than five hundred pages. However, it turns out that when one is producing a literary work aspiring to historical authenticity,one’s plans for the size and the deadlines fall through, just as rocket-space systems aspiring to the highest degree of reliability exceed their budgets and fail to meet their deadlines. And the expenses grow, proportional to the failure to meet deadlines and the increase in reliability. Instead of the original idea of a single book, my memoirs and musings took up four volumes, and together with the publishing house I spent six years instead of the planned two! Only the fact that the literary work was a success, which neither the publishing house nor I expected, validated it. -

Performing History, Troubling Reference Tracking the Screen Re-enactment Megan Carrigy Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of English, Media and Performing Arts University of New South Wales 2011 Abstract While the re-enactment is a form of historical representation that has not received the serious critical attention it deserves, it continues to be a pervasive form of historical representation in film and television. It plays a key role in a number of genres (most notably the documentary, the docudrama, and the biopic) and frequently appears in less expected locations (including video installations, remakes and police procedural television). While re-enactments pre-date cinema, it is cinema—and the technically reproducible image more generally—that has played a crucial role in the development of the re-enactment as both a form of historical representation and a genre. This thesis explores the pervasiveness of the re-enactment in film and other screen based media, tracking its evolution, its mobility and its adaptability in a range of genres and institutional contexts. This thesis argues that in all its diverse manifestations, the re-enactment is always caught between two agendas. On the one hand it sets out to take things literally, to repeat things as they happened, and on the other seeks to foreground itself as a re- enactment, which requires that it self-reflexively foregrounds its theatrical, performative nature. Focussing on the tension between these two agendas, this thesis builds a ‘back history’ for the re-enactment and pursues its dispersal into areas where its persistence has not typically been acknowledged. -
