Foreword This report is an introduction to the Eastern Wairarapa Ecological District, a vast expanse of land to the east of the lower North Island and the third largest ecological district in New Zealand. In particular it describes the most significant natural areas that are not already protected for nature conservation. The Department of Conservation has recommended that these natural areas be protected so that the natural character of the district may be preserved. This report is one of a series produced as part of New Zealand’s Protected Natural Areas Programme (PNAP). -

E-newsletter: No 71. October 2009 Deadline for next issue: Monday 16 November 2009 Message from the President In this month’s packed newsletter there are many interesting and topical issues. There also appears to be an unusually large number of announcements about coming events and conferences. The many and varied articles include a very interesting account by Trevor Thompson about his management of the only known Alepis flavida plants in the lower North Island. Equally interesting is the description by Loralee Hyde of the protection of a unique area in the Upper Clutha Valley that has as many as 13 nationally threatened and uncommon plant species. The engaging story behind the newVeronica species, and its subsequent investigation, is told by Geoff Davidson and Peter de Lange. What an amazing story! Peter de Lange also provides us with convincing evidence of ongoing New Zealand to Chatham Islands plant dispersal. Also in this issue is the report of the first definitive list of Bay of Plenty vascular flora to be published. Congratulations to the Rotorua Botanical Society. I must say how pleased I am to read so many and varied contributions to the newsletter. Please keep then coming in. I think there are many more members out there who could write (be it briefly) some very interesting notes about what they have observed. Such notes might just be about observations on native plants in urban gardens or native plants as food sources for birds and insects (see the PLANT OF THE MONTH - Rumex neglectus Plant of the month for October is Rumex neglectus. -

1. Introduction 1.1 TAXONOMIC BACKGROUND As flowers in the family Calceolariaceae are easily spotted from a distance, and the overall shape and color of the corolla attracts both humans and pollinators alike, they have received much attention throughout the centuries. First decribed by Linneaus (1770) Calceolaria L. (Fig. 1) became subject to noticable additions and subdivisions by botanist like Ruíz and Pavón (1798), Bentham (1846), Kränzlin (1907), and Pennell (1945, 1951a, 1951b). Modern revisions of the genus Calceolaria was made by Molau (1988) for neotropic species, and Ehrhart (2000, 2005) for Chilean species. A modern revision is still lacking for Argentinean species, and the total number of species (approximately 300) could potentially be more than currently recognised. Jovellana, the much smaller sister genus of Calceolaria, has not received as much historical attention as Calceolaria. It was first described by Ruíz and Pavón (1798) during their long field trip to South America, and was subject to attention from botanists like G. Don (1838), Colenso (Colenso, 1894; Hooker, 1843), and Kränzlin (1907). A modern revision has been lacking for Jovellana Ruiz & Pav., but is provided and declares a phylogenetically supported monophyletic sister group relationship to Calceolaria (Paper II), while recognising four species, disjunctly distributed across the Pacific Ocean. Apart from a few widespread annual weeds from Calceolaria, the two species of Jovellana present in New Zealand are the only species located outside the immediate Andean mountain range in South America. A third genus in the family, the monotypic Porodittia (Cav.) G. Don, has been hypothesised to be related to ancestors of the tribe Calceolarieae (Molau, 1988). -

When resources are tight, higher priority management actions should take precedence over lower priority management activities. However, when funding does become available it is important to incorporate lower priority activities into current management plans (concept adapted from Rate et al. 2008). Very high priority: Pest control in Longbush Reserve - Continue to control vertebrate predators to near nil densities. - Continue to exclude vertebrate grazers from entering the reserve. Very high priority: Weed control within Longbush Reserve - Continue systematic surveillance and control of weeds within Longbush Reserve. High priority: Project funding - Prepare an initial budget for the proposed restoration activities. - Begin applying to appropriate funding organisations. High priority: Additional pest control - Extend current pest control to include the 113 ha Waikereru Reserve. Pest control should target rats, mustelids, feral cats, possums and feral goats. High priority: Cessation of livestock grazing - Remove domestic livestock from the Waikereru Reserve. Ensure the fence is maintained to prevent livestock from re-entering the reserve. - Cull feral goats from within the reserve. High priority: Additional weed control - Extend current regime of surveillance and control to include the Waikereru Reserve. - Systematically monitor the Waikereru Reserve for weed invasion following the removing of livestock. Medium priority: Kiwi/weka proof fence - Construct a kiwi/weka proof fence around the perimeter of the Waikereru hills. -

Summer at Fernglen – Curator report December 2014 Malcolm Fisher It has been a favourable spring with ample rain and cool temperatures, reducing the need for watering. The pests which build up in spring have been in abeyance, and are only showing up now with warmer humid weather. So spring growth and flowering has gone well. A forgotten Clematis paniculata, planted under the Pomaderris hamiltonii some years ago, reminded us that it is still present when it suddely burst into flower. And not far away under Metrosideros bartlettii, Clematis cunninghamii showed up with lots of flower. In the last couple of weeks the above-mentioned M. bartlettii, a very rare rata tree from Te Paki in the Far North, has also had quite a good display of white flowers. Another white flowering plant, which has been flowering really well for a couple of months this spring is Olearia cheesmanii. This daisy bush is near the Gazebo and there is another one on Ben’s Ridge. Dracophyllum strictum has flowered well this year and underneath it the NZ Calceolaria (Jovellana sinclairii) is making a spectacular display with its white red- speckled flowers. -

Photo: Jeremy Rolfe. New Zealand Threat Classification Series is a scientific monograph series presenting publications related to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Most will be lists providing NZTCS status of members of a plant or animal group (e.g. algae, birds, spiders). There are currently 23 groups, each assessed once every 3 years. After each 3-year cycle there will be a report analysing and summarising trends across all groups for that listing cycle. From time to time the manual that defines the categories, criteria and process for the NZTCS will be reviewed. Publications in this series are considered part of the formal international scientific literature. This report is available from the departmental website in pdf form.
