Foreword This report is an introduction to the Eastern Wairarapa Ecological District, a vast expanse of land to the east of the lower North Island and the third largest ecological district in New Zealand. In particular it describes the most significant natural areas that are not already protected for nature conservation. The Department of Conservation has recommended that these natural areas be protected so that the natural character of the district may be preserved. This report is one of a series produced as part of New Zealand’s Protected Natural Areas Programme (PNAP). -

Parris* ABSTRACT A list of vascular plants found on Whale Island is presented together with the abundance of each species and the plant communities in which it occurs. INTRODUCTION This list was drawn up during the July visit and only a few species were added on the August visit. Further collections at more favourable seasons would probably add more species, particularly adventive annuals, to the list. The plant communities are as in Parris et al. (1971). Specimens of most species are lodged in the herbarium of the Auckland Institute and Museum. Nomenclature is as follows: indigenous dicotyledons and ferns, 'Flora of New Zealand' Vol. 1 by H.H. Allan (1961); indigenous monocotyledons, 'Flora of New Zealand' Vol. 2 by L.B. Moore and E. Edgar (1970); adventive species, 'Handbook of the Naturalised flora of New Zealand' by H.H. Allan (1941) and 'A Guide to the Identification of Weeds and Clovers' by A.J. Healy (1970). KING Several contributions on seedlings have been presented to the Academy, by Dr. Pammel and Miss King. The present paper con tinues the series, with descriptions and drawings 1 of a number of species of "woody. plants." Some of the seeds used were collected by Dr. Pammel in the southwest in 1931. Some seedlings of orna mentals were furnished through courtesy of Professor Maney and Mr. Stoutemeyer. Other seeds were obtained from diverse sources. Interest in seedling forms arises from the fact that they are constant for individual species, and differ widely between different groups. -

E-newsletter: No 71. October 2009 Deadline for next issue: Monday 16 November 2009 Message from the President In this month’s packed newsletter there are many interesting and topical issues. There also appears to be an unusually large number of announcements about coming events and conferences. The many and varied articles include a very interesting account by Trevor Thompson about his management of the only known Alepis flavida plants in the lower North Island. Equally interesting is the description by Loralee Hyde of the protection of a unique area in the Upper Clutha Valley that has as many as 13 nationally threatened and uncommon plant species. The engaging story behind the newVeronica species, and its subsequent investigation, is told by Geoff Davidson and Peter de Lange. What an amazing story! Peter de Lange also provides us with convincing evidence of ongoing New Zealand to Chatham Islands plant dispersal. Also in this issue is the report of the first definitive list of Bay of Plenty vascular flora to be published. Congratulations to the Rotorua Botanical Society. I must say how pleased I am to read so many and varied contributions to the newsletter. Please keep then coming in. I think there are many more members out there who could write (be it briefly) some very interesting notes about what they have observed. Such notes might just be about observations on native plants in urban gardens or native plants as food sources for birds and insects (see the PLANT OF THE MONTH - Rumex neglectus Plant of the month for October is Rumex neglectus. -

Southern Plant Lists Southern Garden History Society A Joint Project With The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation September 2000 1 INTRODUCTION Plants are the major component of any garden, and it is paramount to understanding the history of gardens and gardening to know the history of plants. For those interested in the garden history of the American south, the provenance of plants in our gardens is a continuing challenge. A number of years ago the Southern Garden History Society set out to create a ‘southern plant list’ featuring the dates of introduction of plants into horticulture in the South. This proved to be a daunting task, as the date of introduction of a plant into gardens along the eastern seaboard of the Middle Atlantic States was different than the date of introduction along the Gulf Coast, or the Southern Highlands. To complicate maters, a plant native to the Mississippi River valley might be brought in to a New Orleans gardens many years before it found its way into a Virginia garden. A more logical project seemed to be to assemble a broad array plant lists, with lists from each geographic region and across the spectrum of time. The project’s purpose is to bring together in one place a base of information, a data base, if you will, that will allow those interested in old gardens to determine the plants available and popular in the different regions at certain times. This manual is the fruition of a joint undertaking between the Southern Garden History Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In choosing lists to be included, I have been rather ruthless in expecting that the lists be specific to a place and a time.
