YNYS PRYDEIN Le cycle arthurien contemporain De l’Histoire à l’Invention Mémoire Geneviève Bellemare Maîtrise en Études littéraires Maître ès arts (M.A.) Québec, Canada © Geneviève Bellemare, 2013 RESUME Le projet de création Ynys Prydein est constitué de plusieurs scènes narrées tantôt par Muir Dunn (Merlin, Myrddin), tantôt par Artan (Arthur), offrant une réécriture du cycle arthurien et des œuvres médiévales d’origines galloises selon une perspective historique. La lutte contre l’envahisseur anglo-saxon, de même que les conflits fratricides qui ont déchiré l’île de Bretagne, sont au cœur de ce récit. Dans la partie réflexive, nous aborderons la question de la construction de l’Histoire, des lacunes archivistiques et de ce que signifie « écrire un roman historique » sur un personnage tel qu’Arthur. Comme le titre l’indique, notre sujet sera l’étude de la construction de l’Histoire. C’est par l’expérimentation que nous parviendrons à saisir les subtilités de cette écriture de la transformation. III IV ABSTRACT The Ynys Prydein project is consists of several scenes told sometimes by Muir Dunn (Merlin, Myrddin), sometimes by Artan (Arthur), offering a rewriting of the Arthurian cycle and the welsh medieval works according to a historical perspective. The fight against the Anglo-Saxon invader, as well as the fratricide conflicts which tore the Island of Brittany, are at the heart of this narrative. In the essay, we shall approach the question of the construction of the History, the archival gaps and what implie " writing a historical novel " on a character such as Arthur. As the title indicates it, our subject will be the study of the construction of the History. -

Leur origine est sans doute bien plus ancienne encore que cela. Ces histoires faisaient partie du corpus de légendes que les bardes médiévaux (car la fonction de barde s’est conservée très longtemps au pays de Galles), poètes de cour et détenteurs officiels de la tradition se devaient d’avoir à leur répertoire. On trouve dans ces récits les traces et le parfum de personnages mythologiques, de divinités des anciens celtes, peut-être même de grands archétypes indo- européens. Tombés petit à petit dans l’oubli, il faudra attendre le XIXème siècle pour que des érudits passionnés comme Lady Charlotte Guest, redonnent une vie à ces histories et les traduisent en anglais. -
A Welsh Classical Dictionary
A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). In a triad (TYP no.73) he is called Dalldaf eil Cunyn Cof, one of the ‘Three Peers’ of Arthur's Court. In another triad (TYP no.41) we are told that Fferlas (Grey Fetlock), the horse of Dalldaf eil Cunin Cof, was one of the ‘Three Lovers' Horses’ (or perhaps ‘Beloved Horses’). -

In het spoor van In het spoor van de discipelen - De beginjaren vergeten van het Christendom de discipelen De vergeten beginjaren Jozef van Arimathea stichtte eerste Christelijke kerk in Brittannië van het Christendom Dit boek pakt de geschiedenis op kort na de verrijzenis van de Here Jezus Christus. Jozef van Arimathea speelde in die geschiedenis een belangrijke rol. Zeer oude geschriften vertellen dat deze man door zijn genadeloze vijanden op zee werd gezet. Samen met een paar trouwe metgezellen, in een open boot zonder roeiriemen of zeil, dreven zij ver van hun Judeese thuisland af. Zij keerden ook nooit meer terug, maar stonden daarentegen aan de basis van de verbreiding van het Christelijk geloof. Jozef van Arimathea was de eerste apostel aan Brittannië. Hij plantte het vaandel van Christus 562 jaar voor Augustinus voet zette op het door zeeën omringde eiland. Met twaalf andere discipelen van de Here Jezus stichtte hij, in wat nu Engeland heet, de eerste openlijke Christelijke kerk. Brittannië werd de voedingsbodem, waar een niet aflatende stroom van jonge bekeerlingen werd opgeleid door de apostelen en discipelen van Christus, die daarna werden uitgezonden naar andere landen om het evangelie te onderwijzen. Dit boek verhaalt ook zeer boeiend over de het ontstaan van de eerste George F. Jowett F. George Christelijke gemeente in Rome, de aanvaarding van het Evangelie door de Kelten, hun oorlogen tegen de Romeinse keizers en de gruwelijke Christenvervolgingen, die uiteindelijk tot staan werden gebracht door de Brit Constantijn, de erfgenaam en wettelijke vertegenwoordiger van de Christelijke dynastie in Brittanië en latere keizer van het Romeinse Rijk. -

Este artículo se centra en el estudio de un texto medieval galés y uno contemporáneo en inglés para demostrar cómo se hace uso y aplican las técnicas de la fábula a la leyenda artúrica. Abstract Even when Arthurian literature does not usually present characteristics of fables but, rather, mythological qualities, some texts make use of fable features in order to develop a moralistic viewpoint. This article deals with the study of a Welsh medieval text and a contemporary one in English to show how the technique of the fable is used and applied to the Arthurian legend. INTRODUCCIÓN De acuerdo con el prestigioso Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory, publicado por Penguin, se defi ne fábula como una historia breve que indica una enseñanza moral para la que se utilizan criaturas no humanas o seres inanimados y, a veces, hombres y hasta dioses. Lo importante es el carácter moral que la fábula contiene. Kurt Spang ha defendido la idea de que las similitudes entre fábula y otros tipos de texto, como el cuento o el mito, han dado lugar a la desaparición de los límites entre estos. -
Arthurian Personal Names in Medieval Welsh Poetry

This work explores how the images of Arthur and other Arthurian characters (Gwenhwyfar, Llachau, Uthr, Eigr, Cai, Bedwyr, Gwalchmai, Melwas, Medrawd, Peredur, Owain, Luned, Geraint, Enid, and finally, Twrch Trwyth) depicted mainly in medieval Welsh prose tales are reflected in the works of poets during that period, traces their developments and changes over time, and, occasionally, has a peep into reminiscences of possible Arthurian tales that are now lost to us, so that readers will see the interaction between the two aspects of middle Welsh literary tradition. It glosses Welsh, classical, biblical, and other allusions, identifies quotations, explains geographical and historical references, and offers any commentary that may throw light on the more complex aspects of the text. (When a quotation is involved, the passage is listed under the first word even if it is “a” or “the.”) It was first made available on the Internet and in booklet form in 2004, and has subsequently been updated and revised from time to time. The present version has been thoroughly reset and expanded. Numerous errors discovered in the intervening years have been corrected. All page-references are to Judith Bond and Morine Krissdóttir’s edition published by Overlook Duckworth in 2007, with those to Wilbur T. Albrecht’s 1994 edition from Colgate University Press following in square brackets. Since the latter contained many errors and inconsistencies, the words listed often appear there in somewhat different form. Moreover, because the editions are based on different copy-texts, some references appear only in one of the editions; when those occurring in only one version require separate annotation, they have been identified and glossed. Chapter 5 The Mabinogi of Math The Birth of Lleu The punishment of the sons of Dôn, along with the rape of Goewin itself, the stealing of the pigs, and the death of the southern hero Pryderi might collectively be seen as the initiating circumstances for the conception of Lleu Llaw Gyfess, the central hero of the Fourth Branch. To understand why this should be the case, it is necessary to re-examine the Celtic tradition relating to the ‘unusual’ birth of heroes, which we have already considered above (pp. 491-494). We will recall, in the story of Cú Chulainn there would appear to have been a number of attendent circumstances, rather than a single cause, surrounding the birth and conception of the hero. The mother of Cú Chulainn seems to have recently lost a much loved (otherworldly) foster-son, imbibed a strange drink and had a prophetic dream in which she met the god Lugh, who informed her that she was pregnant with his child. And pregnant she proved to be. The mysterious circumstances of her pregnancy led to rumours of incestuous relations with her father and considerable private shame. On her wedding night, we are told, she lay on her front and crushed the unborn child within her, yet she soon became pregnant again in the normal way with her new husband. Precisely which of these circumstances led to the birth of the hero is far from clear, but what is implied was that each of them was significant in some way to his coming. The circumstances surrounding the birth of Lleu would seem to be no less murky.
