Style and Meaning Anthropology’S Engagement with Art Has a Complex and Uneven History
NICHOLAS THOMAS THOMAS NICHOLAS & CLARK ALISON style and meaning Anthropology’s engagement with art has a complex and uneven history. While style and material culture, ‘decorative art’, and art styles were of major significance for ( founding figures such as Alfred Haddon and Franz Boas, art became marginal as the EDS meaning discipline turned towards social analysis in the 1920s. This book addresses a major ) moment of renewal in the anthropology of art in the 1960s and 1970s. British Essays on the anthropologist Anthony Forge (1929-1991), trained in Cambridge, undertook fieldwork among the Abelam of Papua New Guinea in the late 1950s and 1960s, anthropology of art and wrote influentially, especially about issues of style and meaning in art. His powerful, question-raising arguments addressed basic issues, asking why so much art was produced in some regions, and why was it so socially important? style ANTHONY FORGE meaning Fifty years later, art has renewed global significance, and anthropologists are again considering both its local expressions among Indigenous peoples and its new global circulation. The west portion of the island, called Papua or West Papua, is politically part of Indonesia. The narrow Torres Strait separates New Guinea from Australia to the south. Physical features have profoundly and diversely shaped the lives of people living there for over fifty thousand years. The natural world, supernatural world and the rituals surrounding life’s passages, inspired the creation of the Jolika Collection works we explore today. They are complex compositions layered with imagery and meaning. -

Tradition and Change: Art from Oceania The cultures of the Pacific, Australia and the Indonesian archipelago are as impressive and extensive as the geographic area that encompasses them. The remarkable works of art in the Oceanic collection of the Museum of Art and Archaeology, all acquired as gifts, reflect only a small portion of this great diversity. Collections often have a specific geographical focus due to the interests of the donors and nature of their donations. The majority of the objects in the Museum’s collection came from the independent country of Papua New Guinea, with outstanding pieces from Indonesia, Fiji and Australia. The art in this exhibition represents several facets of life and society, such as men’s secret societies, women’s roles and warfare. Men’s societies or cults were major societal forces in many of the cultures and produced much art in relation to their affairs. Most of the objects on display were used in conjunction with men’s activities and were stored within the men’s house. Other items such as food dishes, dance wands and agricultural tools give evidence of alternative roles and activities. The objects are displayed in geographic and cultural groupings to illustrate thematic motifs and to underscore certain stylistic commonalities. They were the personal possessions of initiated men and were usually carved by the owner. -
Social Complexity in the Making
Social Complexity in the Making Social Complexity in the Making is a highly accessible ethnography that explains the history and evolution of Ilahita, an Arapesh-speaking village in the interior Sepik region of northeastern New Guinea. This village, unlike others in the region, expanded at an uncharacteristically fast rate more than a century ago, and has maintained its large size (more than 1,500) and importance nearly until the present day. The fascinating story of how Ilahita became this size and how organizational innovations evolved there to absorb internal pressures for disintegration, bears on a question debated ever since Plato raised it: what does it take for people to live together in harmony? Anthropologist Donald Tuzin, drawing on nearly three years’ field work in the village, studies the reasons behind this unusual settlement growth. He discovers the customs and policies of the Tambaran, the secret men’s cult which was the backbone of Ilahita society, and examines the effect of outside influences such as World War II on the village. This work is a unique example of an anthropological case study which will be widely used by undergraduates and academics. It provides an excellent insight into the ways in which ethnography can contribute to a deeper understanding of what makes a society evolve – or collapse. Donald Tuzin has authored many works of New Guinea anthropology. He is presently Professor of Anthropology and Curator of Anthropological Archives at the University of California, San Diego. The collection documents the research and publication career of a prominent Australian anthropologist; his correspondence with Australian, British and American colleagues; and, the scholarly debates that he sparked with his critical analysis of Margaret Mead's research in Samoa. Freeman was trained in the tradition of British social anthropology, but sought a synthesis of human biology and cultural anthropology throughout most of his career. The collection at present represents better this later turn in Freeman's thinking. Freeman performed three major field studies, two (1940-1943 and 1966-1968) in Western Samoa and one in an Iban village in Borneo (1949-1951). The collection contains only scant documentation of the Iban study, but contains all of Freeman's research materials and notes from his Samoan studies. In addition to manuscript drafts of Freeman's articles and books, the collection includes his comprehensive files of popular press and academic discussion of his books MARGARET MEAD AND SAMOA (1983) and THE FATEFUL HOAXING OF MARGARET MEAD (1999), and the documentary film, play, and papers this controversy sparked. -

I discuss how the adoption of mobile phone technology affects and is affected by existing information-communication technologies; how and to what extent Lau adoption of mobile phones is circumscribed by the marginal place of the Lau in globalized capitalist economies; and I elaborate on the main controversies that surround the adoption and use of mobile phones, local conceptualizations of how digital technologies work, their morality, what they are meant to be used for and for what they are not to be used. -

Introduction: Donald F. Tuzin, An Anthropologist’s Anthropologist David Lipset and Paul Roscoe In 2007, Donald Francis (Don) Tuzin died at the age of sixty-one. We who knew him as students and colleagues or simply admired his work from afar lost an anthropologist’s anthropologist—a kind that has gone out of fashion, to say the least. He combined the interests of a generalist with the skills of an experienced field ethnographer. His work drew from and contributed to archaeology as well as reflexive anthropology. Driven by methodological individualism and a strong commitment to comparativism, he focused on social control, dreams, politics and art, cannibalism, food symbolism, the psychodynamics of masculinity, the origins of religion, sexuality and childhood. At the same time as the depth of expertise and sheer creativity he brought to these and a great variety of other subjects broke new ground and won him publication in distinguished disciplinary venues, he influenced large swathes of subsequent research. He was among a wave of international ethnographers who in the late 1960s began to focus belated attention on the Sepik Basin of Papua New Guinea, and he emerged as their dean. In this introductory essay, we sketch out Tuzin’s life and discuss the main themes in the essays that make up this commemorative volume. Background Tuzin’s maternal ancestry had deep American roots. His mother, Thelma Louise Smith (b. 1920), grew up in rural southern Illinois, where her father, George Wesley Smith (1895–1949), owned a small vegetable farm in West Vienna. Although she never attended university, Thelma grew up dreaming of higher pursuits and read incessantly. -
