Megapodes: an action plan for their conservation 1995 - 1999, a collaborative effort of members of the Megapode Specialist Group and the World Pheasant Association, was published in 1995. It summa- rizes the conservation status of all megapode taxa and indicates the needs of those species under threat. The Action Plan was intended to be a stimulus for conservation orientated studies and to gen- erate funds more easily. An overview is given of studies (1990 - present) in which these threatened taxa were involved. The status of these and other taxa are reassessed according to the finalized IUCN threat categories (which supercede the Mace-Lande threat categories originally used in the Action Plan) as a preparation for the megapode action plan 2000 - 2004. Introduction Megapodes: an action plan for their conservation 1995 - 1999 (Dekker & McGowan, 1995) was published by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1995 following a Conservation Assessment Management Plan (CAMP) meeting on galliforms held in Antwerp, Bel- gium, in February 1993. The megapode action plan, soon followed by action plans for partridges, quails, francolins, snowcocks and guineafowl (McGowan et al., 1995) and pheasants (McGowan & Garson, 1995), was the first avian action plan published by the IUCN in their series of conservation action plans.

Kaethe Willms", School of Chemical and Biological Sciences, Autonomous University of Sinaloa, University city, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico SUMMARY: Human gnathostomiasis, which is endemic in Mexico, is a worldwide health concern. It is mainly caused by the consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked fish containing the advanced third-stage larvae (AL3A) of Gnathostoma species. The diagnosis of gnathostomiasis is based on epidemiological surveys and immunological diagnostic tests. When a larva is recovered, the species can be identified by molecular techniques. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the second internal transcription spacer (ITS-2) is useful to identify nematode species, including Gnathostoma species. This study aims to develop a duplex-PCR amplification method of the ITS-2 region to differentiate between the Gnathostoma binucleatum and G. turgidum parasites that coexist in the same endemic area, as well as to identify the Gnathostoma larvae recovered from the biopsies of two gnathostomiasis patients from Sinaloa, Mexico. The duplex PCR established based on the ITS- 2 sequence showed that the length of the amplicons was 321 bp for G. binucleatum and 226 bp for G. turgidum. The amplicons from the AL3A of both patients were 321 bp. Furthermore, the length and composition of these amplicons were identical to those deposited in GenBank as G.

Papua JOHN BRAITHWAITE, MICHAEL COOKSON, VALERIE BRAITHWAITE AND LEAH DUNN1 Papua is interpreted here as a case with both high risks of escalation to more serious conflict and prospects for harnessing a ‘Papua Land of Peace’ campaign led by the churches. The interaction between the politics of the Freeport mine and the politics of military domination of Papua, and military enrichment through Papua, are crucial to understanding this conflict. Replacing the top- down dynamics of military-political domination with a genuine bottom-up dynamism of village leadership and development is seen as holding the key to realising a Papua that is a ‘land of peace’ (see Widjojo et al. 2008). Papuans have less access to legitimate economic opportunities than any group in Indonesia and have experienced more violence and torture since the late 1960s in projects of the military to block their political aspirations than any other group in Indonesia today. Institutions established with the intent of listening to Papuan voices have in practice been deaf to those voices. Calls for truth and reconciliation are among the pleas that have fallen on deaf ears, which is an acute problem when so many Papuans see Indonesian policy in Papua as genocide. Anomie in the sense of withdrawal of commitment to the Indonesian normative order by citizens, and in the sense of gaming that order by the military, is entrenched in Papua. Background to the conflict Troubled jewels of cultural and biological diversity The island of New Guinea and the smaller islands along its coast are home to nearly 1000 languages (267 on the Indonesian side) and one-sixth of the world’s ethnicities (Ruth-Hefferbower 2002:228).

This chapter will be concerned first with the creative process itself, as it applies to Duna song creation. Both ancestral and introduced song styles display a similar approach to composition, in particular the recycling of melodic material in songs of the same genre, and this compositional process can be seen as another form of continuity. This in turn reveals continuity in what is regarded as a key element of Duna song form: textual innovation. Consequences of this creative approach for the preservation endeavour are considered, before the chapter then turns to the views of the Duna themselves on the maintenance of their own traditions and some of the ways in which they have sought to do this.1 Continuity in creativity: ‘traim na wokim tasol’ The process of creativity is epitomised in the words of one popular song, ‘traim na wokim tasol’ (‘just try and do it’), cited above.2 One must acknowledge, however, that creativity does not start from nothing. Liep (2001:1) describes creativity as something that ‘bursts forth when elements, which were already known but apart, are brought together by inventive people in a novel way’. Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Wewack Indonesia Papua New Guinea Lae Project site Port Moresby Australia Project site Section of the Bereina-Malalaua Road 1.1 Background In Papua New Guinea (PNG), the absence of road links between its capital, Port Moresby, the second city, Lae, and the Highland Province, home to vigorous mining and agricultural production activity, meant a sole reliance on marine and air transport, a situation that was highly inefficient both in economic and social terms. To address this, the government formulated plans to construct a road linking the cities of Port Moresby and Lae that would pass through the Owen Stanley mountains, and in 1979, the Australian government supported the implementation of a feasibility study (F/S) for this route. The plan for the trans-island Port Moresby – Lae highway comprised a stretch spanning 575 kilometers, and included construction of a new 80 kilometer road between Bereina and Malalaua, detailed designs for the 135 kilometer section between Malalaua and Aseki, and widening of the existing 90 kilometer stretch between Aseki and Latep (all distances are approximate). Other sections were excluded from the plan. In the southern Bereina-Malalaua section that was covered by this project, local residents were dependent upon marine transport, a situation that was, in fact, akin to living on an isolated inland islands. It was anticipated that the construction of a new road linking the area with the capital Port Moresby, would make a substantial contribution to economic development and to improving the services like health and education.
