Afro Deutschland Positiv HERZLICH WILLKOMMEN! WELCOME! Herzlich willkommen zu unserem 31sten Internatio- nalen Africa Festival auf den Würzburger Mainwie- sen! Vielen Dank nochmals an dieser Stelle, dass sie - wertes Publikum - mit dazu beigetragen haben, im vergangenen Jahr ein so wunderbares Jubiläums- festival mit uns zu feiern. Künstler, die Ihnen und uns am Herzen lagen und maßgeblich über all die Jahre zum Erfolg des Africa Festivals als feste Institution beigetragen haben, machten diese Tage unvergess- lich. Wie wichtig das Festival gerade in diesen Zeiten ist, zeigte, dass kein anderer als der Bundespräsi- dent selbst, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, es sich nicht nehmen ließ, das Festival 2018 zu eröffnen. Wir werden weiterhin mutig voran schreiten, denn es gibt noch viele weitere musikalische Schätze auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent und der entsprechen- den Diaspora zu entdecken. Farbenfroh und rhythmusreich starten wir unsere Reise zum schwarzen Kontinent in der Karibik, mit einer der besten Steelbands der Welt und seit lan- gem wieder einmal, mit einer Straßenparade von den Inseln Aruba und Curacao. Höhepunkt an diesem Tag wird der Auftritt der legendären Calypso Rose sein, die schon vor ein paar Jahren das Festivalzelt zum Kochen brachte. Besonders stolz sind wir, dass wir durch das Voting mit einer großen Beteiligung unserer Besucher 10 Bands bzw. Wenn Sie Zeit haben, schauen Sie auch mal in der Universität Würzburg vorbei. Die weltweit bekannten Fotografen Carol Beckwith und Angela Fisher prä- sentieren mit ihrer hervorragenden Ausstellung „Afri- can Twilight“ einen Einblick in schon fast verschwun- dene Rituale des afrikanischen Kontinents. Mit dem wunderbaren Basar, dem Programm im Kin- derzelt, wo wir wieder Adesa und unseren Geschich- tenerzähler Ibu gewinnen konnten, der täglichen Modeschau der senegalesischen Modedesignerin Rama Diaw, unseren DJs im Havanna Club, sowie dem ARTE Kino- und dem Weinzelt, haben wir natür- lich auch wieder viele weitere Ihrer geliebten Dauer- brenner mit an Bord. We start our journey to the black continent in the Carib- bean in a colourful and rhythmic way: with one of the best steel bands in the world. For the first time in a long while, we will be having a street parade from the islands of Aruba and Curacao again. The highlight of this day will be the legendary Calypso Rose who has already enthused the audience of the festival tent several years ago. We are particularly proud that we were able to book 10 bands and artists who have never performed at the Africa Festival before or in Germany thanks to the voting and the many contributions of our audience. With the Ndlovu Youth Choir there will even be a choir from South Africa performing for the first time on the main stage. Furthermore, you will surely be excited about the debut of the afrobeat women of Kokoroko or the show of Mokoomba. Be sure to visit the university of Würzburg when you have a moment. The world-famous photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher will be presenting an insight into rituals of the African continent, which have almost disappeared, with their extraordinary exhibition “African Twilight”. With the wonderful basar, the programme in the children’s tent for which we were able to book Adesa and storyteller Ibu again, the daily fashion show of the Senegalese fashion designer Rama Diaw, our DJs in the Havana Club, as well as the ARTE cinema tent and the wine tent we will of course feature many of your belo- ved evergreens again. Von einer traditionellen „Pan Round Neck”- Band, die hauptsächlich auf Straßenparaden spielte, haben sie sich inzwischen zu einer professionellen Steelband entwickelt. Bereits acht Mal gewannen sie den nationa- len „Panorama” Steel Pan Wettbewerb vom Notting Hill Karneval. Die 20 Musiker werden die Besucher des Festivals mit ihrer überschäumenden Energie begeistern. The “Mangrove Steel Band” is one of the most famous steel bands. The band started as a traditional Mario Gerth “Pan Round Neck” group, which played mainly on street parades, and has now established itself as a © professional steel band. It has won the “Panorama”, the national steel pan competition of the Notting Hill carnival, eight times. DONNERSTAG 15.00 UHR WALLY WARNING ROOTS BAND CARIBBEAN GROOVE FROM ARUBA Wenn der sympathische Sänger Wally Warning, Multi-Instrumentalist und Komponist solo oder mit Band auf der Bühne steht, springt der Funke schnell über. Musik versteht er als Lebenseli- xier, als verbindende Leidenschaft über alle Grenzen hinweg. Er fühlt sich keiner Kategorie ver- pflichtet, liebt Reggae. Bei ihm verschmelzen karibischer Groove mit Latin-Roots auf höchstem musikalischen Niveau. Fürs Africa Festival hat Wally neun Musiker aus der Karibik und Deutschland zusammenge- trommelt... alte und neue Weggefährten. Auch seine erfolgreiche Tochter Ami ist als Bassistin mit in der Band. Man darf sich auf einen ganz besonderen Auftritt freuen, bei dem sein Hitsong „no monkey“ nicht fehlen darf. When the likeable singer Wally Warning, multi-instrumentalist and composer, performs on stage – eit- her solo or with his band – the audience is quickly electrified. He sees music as an elixir of life, a linking passion across all boundaries. He doesn’t feel committed to one musical category, he loves reggae. He merges Caribbean groove with Latin roots at the highest musical level. For the Africa Festival Wally rounded up nine musicians from the Caribbean and Germany... old and new companions. Sie besteht aus Blechmusikern und Trommlern. 1986 wurde die Gruppe von arubischen und antillischen Studenten gegründet, die schon seit Kindheitstagen zusammen Musik gespielt haben. Die Musik ist eine Mischung aus spani- schen, afrikanischen, europäischen und brasili- anischen Elementen wie Samba, Soca, Calypso, Merengue und moderner Musik. Der Ursprung ihrer schnellen und rhythmischen Musik ist das größte Festival der Welt – der Karneval in Rio. Die Energie und der Enthusiasmus der Musiker sind unermüdlich und die Rhythmen sind anste- ckend. Man kann die Füße nicht stillhalten! The Caribbean Brass International originated as a street-marching dance orchestra. The band con- sists of brass players and drummers. It was formed in 1986 by Aruban and Antillean students, who have been playing as a band since they were chil- dren. Their music is a mixture of Spanish, African, European and Brazilian elements, like samba, soca, calypso, merengue and modern music. Introduction [SLIDE – kuduro/batida in Portugal] Batida (meaning ‘beat’ in Portuguese) is used as a collective term for recent forms of electronic dance music associated with the Afrodiasporic DJs of Lisbon, first- or second-generation immigrants from Portugal’s former colonies (especially Angola, Guinea Bissau, Cabo Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe). Batida is influenced – and seen as an evolution of – the EDM musics emanating from these countries, especially the kuduro and tarraxinha music of Angola. Like kuduro, this is a sound that – while occasionally making references to older styles – is contemporary music created on digital audio workstations such as FL Studio.1 Recent years have produced extensive coverage of the batida scene in English language publications such as Vice/Thump, FACT, The Wire and Resident Advisor. In a global EDM scene still dominated by Anglo-American understandings of popular music, batida is often compared to Chicago footwork and grime (just as fado has often been compared to the blues). The translation is a two-way process, with musicians taking on the role of explaining their music through extra-cultural references. This paper uses these attempts at musical translation as a prompt to explore issues of strangeness and encounter in responses to batida, and to situate them in the broader context of discourse around global pop.

    Shangaan Electro | norient.com 25 Sep 2021 12:53:55 Shangaan Electro by Thomas Burkhalter Die rasend schnellen Melodie-Pattern des neu entdeckten Stils «Shangaan Electro» aus Südafrika werden mit der «Minimal Music» von Steve Reich verglichen. Sie klingen aber ganz anders. «Shangaan Electro»: So nennt sich eine frisch entdeckte Musik aus Südafrika. Sie setzt auf verzwickte Melodien auf Marimba, Midi-Keyboard- Orgeln und Synthesizer, kurze repetitiven Gesangs-Samples (oft in Englisch), eher zurückhaltende Off-Beat-Rhythmen und Schlagzeug-Breaks. Das angeschlagende Tempo ist allerdings rasant: meistens um die 180 Beats pro Minute. Tänzer in clownesken Kostümen und Masken bewegen ihre Glieder dazu so, als hätten ihre Körper keine Knochen. Produziert wird «Shangaan Electro» von der Shangaan Bevölkerung (den Tsonga). Diese sind mehrheitlich aus dem südlichen Mozambique und aus der südafrikanischen Provinz Limpopo eingewandert und leben heute im Township von Soweto. George Maluleke und seine Band gelten als Pioniere dieses Stils. Der Blog 27 Leggies: Bringing Tsonga Music to the Masses schreibt: «He is 52, born and bred in Bangwani Village near Malamule, and has (or had in 2006) four wives and 14 children. It presumably must be a struggle to support so many by music alone, as "he also has two mini-buses which he bought with the proceeds of his albums". Or maybe they are just for transporting the family down to the shops.» Hier zwei Stücke von George Malukele: «Nizondha Swiendlo» (2003) und «Tinhlolo» (2005): Ausserhalb von Soweto war «Shangaan Electro» lange weitgehend unbekannt.
