Herzlich willkommen zu unserem 31sten Internatio- nalen Africa Festival auf den Würzburger Mainwie- sen! Vielen Dank nochmals an dieser Stelle, dass sie - wertes Publikum - mit dazu beigetragen haben, im vergangenen Jahr ein so wunderbares Jubiläums- festival mit uns zu feiern. Künstler, die Ihnen und uns am Herzen lagen und maßgeblich über all die Jahre zum Erfolg des Africa Festivals als feste Institution beigetragen haben, machten diese Tage unvergess- lich. Wie wichtig das Festival gerade in diesen Zeiten ist, zeigte, dass kein anderer als der Bundespräsi- dent selbst, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, es sich nicht nehmen ließ, das Festival 2018 zu eröffnen. Wir werden weiterhin mutig voran schreiten, denn es gibt noch viele weitere musikalische Schätze auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent und der entsprechen- den Diaspora zu entdecken.

Farbenfroh und rhythmusreich starten wir unsere Reise zum schwarzen Kontinent in der Karibik, mit einer der besten Steelbands der Welt und seit langem wieder einmal, mit einer Straßenparade von den Inseln Aruba und Curacao. Höhepunkt an diesem Tag wird der Auftritt der legendären Calypso Rose sein, die schon vor ein paar Jahren das Festivalzelt zum Kochen brachte. Besonders stolz sind wir, dass wir durch das Voting mit einer großen Beteiligung unserer Besucher 10 Bands bzw. Künstler gewinnen konnten, die noch nie beim Africa Festival aufgetreten sind oder über- haupt das erste Mal in Deutschland Auftritte haben werden. Mit dem Ndlovu Youth Choir wird erstmals

Mit dem wunderbaren Basar, dem Programm im Kin- derzelt, wo wir wieder Adesa und unseren Geschich- tenerzähler Ibu gewinnen konnten, der täglichen Modeschau der senegalesischen Modedesignerin Rama Diaw, unseren DJs im Havanna Club, sowie dem ARTE Kino- und dem Weinzelt, haben wir natür- lich auch wieder viele weitere Ihrer geliebten Dauer- brenner mit an Bord. Der Kultursender ARTE ist wieder Partner des 31. Africa Festivals und präsentiert zum 11. Mal das ARTE Kinozelt auf dem Festivalge- lände mit einem Filmprogramm zu Musik und Kultur der Karibik und Westafrikas.

Welcome to our 31st International Africa Festival at Main- wiesen in Würzburg! We would like to thank you, dear audience, again for having contributed in the celebration of the wonderful anniversary festival last year. Artists who were close to your and our hearts and who have been making the festival as a permanent institution successful over all these years made this festival unforgettable. None other than Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier himself showed how important the festival is especially during these times. He inaugurated the festival in 2018. We will continue to courageously proceed as there are many more musical

We start our journey to the black continent in the Carib- bean in a colourful and rhythmic way: with one of the best steel bands in the world. For the first time in a long while, we will be having a street parade from the islands of Aruba and Curacao again. The highlight of this day will be the legendary Calypso Rose who has already enthused the audience of the festival tent several years ago. We are particularly proud that we were able to book 10 bands and artists who have never performed at the Africa Festival before or in Germany thanks to the voting and the many contributions of our audience. With the Ndlovu Youth Choir there will even be a choir from South Africa performing for the first time on the main stage. Furthermore, you will surely be excited about the debut of the afrobeat women of Kokoroko or the show of Mokoomba.

Be sure to visit the university of Würzburg when you have a moment. The world-famous photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher will be presenting an insight into rituals of the African continent, which have almost disappeared, with their extraordinary exhibition “African Twilight”.

With the wonderful basar, the programme in the children’s tent for which we were able to book Adesa and storyteller Ibu again, the daily fashion show of the Senegalese fashion designer Rama Diaw, our DJs in the Havana Club, as well as the ARTE cinema tent and the wine tent we will of course feature many of your belo- ved evergreens again. The cultural TV channel ARTE is again the partner of the 31st Africa festival and will be presenting the cinema tent on the festival ground for the eleventh time with a programme featuring films about music and culture of West Africa and the Caribbean.

MANGROVE STEEL BAND STEELPAN MUSIC FROM TRINIDAD

Die Mangrove Steel Band ist eine der bekanntesten Steelbands. Von einer traditionellen „Pan Round Neck”- Band, die hauptsächlich auf Straßenparaden spielte, haben sie sich inzwischen zu einer professionellen Steelband entwickelt. Bereits acht Mal gewannen sie den nationa- len „Panorama” Steel Pan Wettbewerb vom Notting Hill Karneval. Die 20 Musiker werden die Besucher des Festivals mit ihrer überschäumenden Energie begeistern.

The “Mangrove Steel Band” is one of the most famous steel bands. The band started as a traditional “Pan Round Neck” group, which played mainly on street parades, and has now established itself as a professional steel band. It has won the “Panorama”, the national steel pan competition of the Notting

Wenn der sympathische Sänger Wally Warning, Multi-Instrumentalist und Komponist solo oder mit Band auf der Bühne steht, springt der Funke schnell über. Musik versteht er als Lebenseli- xier, als verbindende Leidenschaft über alle Grenzen hinweg. Er fühlt sich keiner Kategorie verpflichtet, liebt Reggae. Bei ihm verschmelzen karibischer Groove mit Latin-Roots auf höchstem musikalischen Niveau. Fürs Africa Festival hat Wally neun Musiker aus der Karibik und Deutschland zusammenge- trommelt... alte und neue Weggefährten. Auch seine erfolgreiche Tochter Ami ist als Bassistin mit in der Band. Man darf sich auf einen ganz besonderen Auftritt freuen, bei dem sein Hitsong „no monkey“ nicht fehlen darf.

When the likeable singer Wally Warning, multi-instrumentalist and composer, performs on stage – eit- her solo or with his band – the audience is quickly electrified. He sees music as an elixir of life, a linking passion across all boundaries. He doesn’t feel committed to one musical category, he loves reggae. Die Band Caribbean Brass International entstand als marschierendes Tanzorchester. Sie besteht aus Blechmusikern und Trommlern. 1986 wurde die Gruppe von arubischen und antillischen Studenten gegründet, die schon seit Kindheitstagen zusammen Musik gespielt haben. Die Musik ist eine Mischung aus spani- schen, afrikanischen, europäischen und brasili- anischen Elementen wie Samba, Soca, Calypso, Merengue und moderner Musik. Der Ursprung ihrer schnellen und rhythmischen Musik ist das größte Festival der Welt – der Karneval in Rio. Die Energie und der Enthusiasmus der Musiker sind unermüdlich und die Rhythmen sind anste- ckend. Man kann die Füße nicht stillhalten!

The Caribbean Brass International originated as a street-marching dance orchestra. The band consists of brass players and drummers. It was formed in 1986 by Aruban and Antillean students, who have been playing as a band since they were children. Their music is a mixture of Spanish, African, European and Brazilian elements, like samba, soca, calypso, merengue and modern music. The fast, rhythmic music they play has its origin in the biggest festival of the people - the carnival. The energy and enthusiasm of the musicians is inexhaustible and the rhythm is contagious. It is impossible to keep your

MOONLIGHT BENJAMIN MAGIC VOODOO 1st! BLUES ROCK FROM HAITI

Die Rhythmen und das Lebensgefühl ihrer Heimat Haiti die, wie das afrikanische „Wurzelland“ Benin, ganz von der Voodoo Religion bestimmt wird, hat Moonlight Benjamin als Kind tief in sich aufgeso- gen und mit in ihre heutige Wahlheimat Frankreich genommen. Dort spielte und arbeitete sie zuerst mit verschiedenen Jazz-Künstlern, wie Omar Sosa, zusammen. Kein Wunder, dass ihr aktueller Sound auf dem hoch gelobten neuen Album „Siltane“ (2018) nun auch aus der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jazz-Gitarristen und Arrangeur Matthis Pascaud entstand. Ihr rebellischer und kraftvoller Gesang - die Texte in kreolischer mal französischer Sprache vorgetragen - vermischt sich mit 70er US-Garagen- Blues-Rock ohne als Voodoo Priesterin ihre traditionellen Roots zu vernachlässigen. Magisch & Groovy!

When she was a child, Moonlight Benjamin soaked up the rhythms and attitude to life of her home country Haiti, which, as well as the African root country Benin, is completely determined by the voodoo religion, and took these influences to her adopted country France. In France she started working with different jazz musicians like Omar Sosa. It is no surprise that the sound on her new critically acclaimed album “Siltane” (2018) was a result of the collaboration with jazz guitarist and arranger Matthis Pascaud. She combines her rebelli- ous and powerful vocals – her texts are in Creole or French – with 70s garage blues rock without neglecting her traditional roots as a voodoo priestess. Magical and

CALYPSO ROSE THE GREAT QUEEN AND ICON OF CALYPSO FROM TRINIDAD

Als am 27. April 1940 Rose McCartha Linda Sandy Lewis, Tochter eines einfachen Fischers, das Licht der Welt erblickte, konnte niemand erahnen, dass sie einmal als erste Frau die männerdominierte Welt des Calypso revolutionieren sollte. Aber mit unbändiger Willenskraft und dem Glauben an die Rechte der Frauen setzte sie ihren Weg fort und überzeugte mit einzigartiger Qualität alle Zweif- ler. Der große Calypsonian Mighty Spoiler verlieh ihr deswegen den Ehrentitel „Calypso Rose“ und mittlerweile trägt sogar eine Boeing 737 der Carib- bean Airlines ihren Namen. 2016 hat sie mit dem Album „Far From Home“, in Zusammenarbeit mit Manu Chao, nochmals einen weiteren Meilenstein ihrer Karriere vorgelegt. Mit ihrer charmanten Art den Calypso mit Soca-, Blues- und Reggaeklängen zu würzen, begeistert sie weltweit jedes Publikum!

When Rose McCartha Linda Sandy Lewis was born on 27 April 1940 as the daughter of a simple fisherman nobody would have anticipated that she would one day revolutionize the male-dominated world of calypso. But with boundless willpower and her believe in women’s rights she continued on her path and convinced anyone who doubted her with a unique quality. Thus the great Calypsonian Mighty Spoiler granted her the honorary title “Calypso Rose“ and now even a boing 737 from the Caribbean Airlines bears her name. In 2016 she set another milestone of her career with the album “Far From Home“ in collaboration with Manu Chao. Da sie sich selber keine Grenzen setzen, lädt das Duo seine Zuhörer auf eine Reise quer durch die World Music ein. Als Produzent und Gitarrist steht Ihnen Rudy Valentino Jr. zur Seite, der schon mit Samy Deluxe u.v.m. zusammengearbeitet hat.

With this duo consisting of a female singer from Hamburg and kora player from Casamance (Senegal) a soulful, jazzy voice meets traditional and modern kora sounds! As they are not setting themselves boundaries, the duo invites the audience to a journey through world music. Rudy Valentina Jr. accompanies them as a producer and guitarist who has already worked with Samy Deluxe and many others.

Dass auch Frauen den Afrobeat können und in sich haben, beweist dieses junge Kollektiv, das sich in London zusammen gefunden hat. Die Trompete spielende Band-Leaderin Sheila Maurice-Grey sagt: „Wir machen die Musik, die wir lieben und schon unsere Eltern gehört haben. Fela Kuti, Tony Allen aus Nigeria oder der Ghanaer Ebo Taylor, das sind unsere Ikonen!“ Zusammen mit Cassie Kinoshi am Saxophon und Richie SeivWright an der Posaune plus Band wird sie das Publikum mit geballter Women-Power begeistern!

URBAN AFROBEATS AND MANDINGO FUNK FROM GUINEA

Der am 21. April 1977 in Conakry geborene Ausnahme-Gitarrist hat 2007 seinen Lebens- mittelpunkt nach Paris verlegt. Dort hat der aus einer Griot Familie kommende Musiker sein Gitarrenspiel verfeinert und stand seit- dem mit Musikern wie Corey Harris, Mariama oder Fatoumata Diawara auf der Bühne. „Fé Toki“ heißt sein letztes, hervorragendes Album auf dem er einen modernen, urbanen Afropop spielt, ohne seine Mandingo Roots zu verges- sen. Wenn er den Afro Blues erklingen läst, spannt er mit seiner Gitarre sogar den Bogen vom Niger bis zum Mississippi Delta.

The exceptional guitar player who was born in Conakry on 21 April 1977, moved the centre of his life to Paris in 2007. There, the musician who comes from a griot family, perfected his guitar skills and has since shared the stage with musicians like Corey Harris, Mariama or Fatoumata Diawara. His current amazing album is called “Fé Toki“. On the CD, he plays modern, urban afro pop without for- getting about his mandingo roots. NDLOVU 1st! YOUTH CHOIR WONDERFUL YOUNG VOICES FROM LIMPOPO / SOUTH AFRICA

Der 2009 ins Leben gerufene Chor war eigentlich zuerst als Hilfsprojekt für Jugendliche gedacht, die in den abgelegenen Regionen Limpopos aus vieler- lei Gründen keine Perspektive sahen, ihre Zukunft zu gestalten. Mittlerweile hat sich jedoch das Projekt unter der Leitung von Ralf Schmitt immer weiter pro- fessionalisiert. Viele der Jungen und Mädchen können sich mit ihren wunderbaren Stimmen sogar einen Teil ihres notwendigen Lebensunterhalts finanzieren. Der ca. 30köpfige Chor zählt im „Land der 1000 Stimmen“ zu den ganz großen Newcomern in ihrem Metier. Den Township Jive haben sie genauso drauf, wie die Hits von Hugh Masekela oder die Songs aus dem Musical „Sarafina“. Mit einer Neuinterpretation von Ed Sheerans „Shape Of You“ streben sie nun sogar eine Grammy- Nominierung an.

The choir, which was founded in 2009, was initially started as a charity project to help young adults from different remote areas in Limpopo, who didn’t have a perspective, create their future. By now, the project, which is headed by Ralf Schmitt, has become more and more professional. Many of the young boys and girls can even make a part of their necessary livelyhood with their beautiful voices. The choir, which consists of ca. 30 people, is considered one of the great newcomers in the “land of the 1000 voices”. Part of its repertoire is the township jive, as well as hits by Hugh Masekela or songs from the musical “Sarafina“. With its new interpretation of “Shape Of You“ by Ed Sheeran they are even aiming for a Grammy award.

FEMI KUTI AFROBEAT AT ITS BEST DIRECTLY FROM LAGOS / NIGERIA

Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti ist der älteste Sohn des unvergessenen “King Of Afrobeat”, Fela Ani- kulapo Kuti. Fela lernte Femi´s Mutter Remi Taylor während eines Studiums in London kennen. 1962 kam Femi dort zur Welt, wuchs aber dann bei seinem Vater in Nigeria auf. Dort erlebte er den Werdegang seines Vaters hautnah mit und stand als Jugendlicher schon bald selbst, Saxophon spielend, mit dem großen Fela auf der Bühne des hauseigenen Music Clubs, des legendären „African Shrine“. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters 1997 war es für ihn mehr als selbstverständlich das musikalische Erbe seines Vaters anzutreten und fortzufüh- ren. Sensationell 1998 sein Album „Shoki Shoki“. Auch jetzt ist er mit dem aktuellen Werk „One Peo- ple One World“ (2018) sich selbst und der sozialkri- tischen Linie seines Vaters treu geblieben.

Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti is the oldest son of the unforgotten “King Of Afrobeat”, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela met Femi’s mother Remi Taylor while studying in London. Femi was born there in 1962 but then grew up with his father in Nigeria. There, he was able to expe- rience the career of his father up close and as a teen- ager he was even playing the saxophone on stage with the great Fela at their own music club, the legendary “African Shrine“. After the death of his father in 1997 he naturally accepted his musical inheritance and continued it. His 1998 album “Shoki Shoki“ is sensational! SAMSTAG 15.00 UHR 1st! THABILÉ SOUTH AFRICAN AFRO SOUL AND AFRO JAZZ

Thabilé ist in Dlamini, einem Township von Soweto / Johannesburg, geboren und aufgewachsen. Für ihre aktuelle Debüt-CD „Dlamini Echo“ (2018) ist sie nun noch einmal tief in ihre Kind- heitserinnerungen eingetaucht und erzählt von den ersten Tagen nach der Apartheid und den verschiedenen berührenden Schicksalen der dort lebenden Frauen. Musikalisch arbeitet sie schon seit langem mit ihrem Gitarristen Steve Bimamisa zusammen, der ihrer ausdrucksstar- ken Stimme in seinen Kompositionen jede Freiheit lässt.

Thabilé was born and grew up in Dlamini, a township of Soweto/Johannesburg. For her debut CD “Dlamini Echo” (2018) she delved deep into her childhood memories and recounts the first days after apartheid and the various touching fates of the women in the township. SAMSTAG 13.00 UHR 1st! BCUC MODERN TRADITIONAL AFROPSYCHODELIC VIBES FROM SOUTH AFRICA

BCUC steht kurz für „Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness“. Die 7-köpfige Band aus dem Township Soweto in Joburg bewegt sich auf traditionellen Pfaden, stets verbunden mit ihrem Glauben und den dazugehörigen Ritualen und blicken trotzdem auf das heutige, moderne Afrika. Sie bezeichnen ihren Stil schmunzelnd „Africangungungu“, als eine Art von Afropsy- chodelic, und weit entfernt vom gängigen Mainstream. Spannend vermischen sie „Shebeen“- Songs oder Kirchenlieder mit Rap oder Rock und können Afrobeat genauso gut wie Funk. Spannend und „Hot“!

BCUC is the abbreviation for “Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness“. The band from the township Soweto in Johannesburg is taking traditional paths; the seven members are always connected to their faith and the corresponding rituals while also keeping in touch with the modern Africa of today. They call their style “Africangungungu“ with a smile, a sort of afro psychodelic and a far cry from the common mainstream. The band combines shebeen songs or church songs with rap and rock in an

MOKOOMBA STRONG ENERGY AND POWER 1st! FROM ZIMBABWE

Die Jungs, dieser energiegeladenen Band aus Simbabwe, haben sich zwischen 2002 und 2007 im Chinotimba Township von Victoria Falls gesucht und gefunden. Mittlerweile begeistern die Shooting Stars aus dem südlichen Afrika, mit ihrem charismatischen Bandleader Mathias Muzaza, ihr Pub- likum weltweit. Souskous, Funk, Pop, Reggae und natürlich die Rhythmen und Stilrichtungen ihrer Heimat wür- zen sie zu einem heißen, panafrika- nischen Crossover-Mix, der stets in einer mitreißenden Bühnenshow prä- sentiert wird.

Mit der in Tarrafal auf Sao Nicolau geborenen Lucibela ist ein weiterer Stern über dem Musik- himmel der Kapverden aufgegangen. Ganz bescheiden sagt sie dazu nur: „Cesária war einzigartig und sie wird es auch immer bleiben!“ Die letzten Jahre tingelte sie durch die Hotels auf Sal oder Boa Vista, spielte in den Bars und Lokalen der Hauptstadt Praia. Doch nun hat sie ihr erstes Album „Laco Umbilical“, was übersetzt „Nabel- schnur“ heißt, in Lissabon eingespielt und so wird ihre grandiose Stimme nun auch im Rest der Welt endlich Gehör finden.

Lucibela, born in Tarrafal on Sao Nicolau, is another rising star of the musical heaven of the Cape Verdes. She recounts stories about love, longing and hope from the sparse islands of her home with sentimental mourna sounds or danceable coladeira exactly like her idol Cesária Evora to whom people already com- pare her. TOURÉ KUNDA THE WEST AFRICAN LEGENDS FROM SENEGAL

Die Älteren werden sich erinnern… zu den allerers- ten Weltmusik Alben aus Afrika, die in jeder besser sortierten Plattensammlung zu finden waren, zählten Osibisa´s „Black Magic Night - Live At The Royal Festival Hall“ (1977) und Touré Kunda´s „Live Paris- Ziguinchor“ (1984). Kern dieser Familienformation aus der Casamance bilden die Geschwister Ismaila und Sixu Tidiané Touré, die am Anfang auch durch ihren 1983 verstorbenen Bruder Amadu unterstützt wurden. Etliche weitere erfolgreiche Alben haben sie bis 2008 eingespielt. Nach einer schöpferischen Regenerationspause haben sie sich nun mit dem sensationellen Werk „Lambi Golo“ (2018) zurückge- meldet. Frisch, als wäre die Zeit für sie stehen geblieben, haben sie sich so entschlossen noch einmal live auf der Bühne zu stehen und Hits, wie „Emma“, mit ihren Fans zu zelebrieren.

Awa Fall aka Sista Awa erblickte 1996 als Tochter eines senegalesischen Vaters und einer italienischen Mutter in Bergamo das Licht der Welt. 2010 startete sie langsam ihre musikalische Karriere, sang Soul und Blues bis sie, mit der Unterstüt- zung von einer italienischen Reggae Formation, den Easy Skankers, sich ganz dem Roots Reggae zuwandte. Gleich ihr erstes Solo-Album „Inna Dis Ya Iwa“ wurde ein großer Erfolg. Awa lebt weiterhin in ihrer Heimat Italien, lässt sich aber immer wieder durch Reisen in den Senegal inspirieren. Mit ihrer neuen Begleitband, den Rising Tones und DJ Bonnot, hat sie sich weiterentwickelt und ist mittlerweile auch im Dub und Jungle zuhause. Beim Africa Festival in Würzburg steht sie das erste Mal auf der Bühne und wird auch die Songs ihres aktuellen Albums präsentieren.

GENTLEMAN WITH SPECIAL GUESTS GERMANY’S REGGAE ARTIST NUMBER ONE

Als ihm im Alter von siebzehn Jahren sein Bruder ein Mixtape mit Songs aus Jamaika mitbrachte, war es um den in Osna- brück und in Köln aufgewachsenen Pastorensohn Tilmann Otto geschehen. Er reiste selbst auf die Karibikinsel, in die Heimat der Reggae Musik. Zuerst nur als DJ aktiv, wurde er unter anderem von Künstlern wie Max Herre ermuntert selbst seine Interpretation des Roots Reggae zu spielen. Von da an ging es mit seiner Karriere steil bergauf. Bereits sein zwei- tes Album „Journey To Jah“ (2002) erreichte Goldstatus und das darauf folgende „Confidence“ (2004) gilt als eines der erfolgreichsten, je verkauften Alben der deutschen Reggae Geschichte. Unzählige Kollegen wie Shaggy oder Ky-Mani Marley schätzen seine Qualitäten. Mit seiner eingespielten Hausband wird er zum Abschluss des Africa Festivals sein aktuelles Album vorstellen.

When his brother gave him a mix tape with songs from Jamaica when he was 17 years old, Tilman Otto, the son of a pastor who grew up in Osnabrück and Cologne, was thrilled. He decided to travel to the Caribbean island, the home of reggae. He started as a DJ and was soon encouraged by other artists like Max Herre to play his own interpretation of roots reggae. From this moment his career skyrocketed. His second album “Journey To Jah“ (2002) already reached gold status and the following “Confidence“ (2004) is considered one of the most successful albums that has ever been sold in the history of German reggae. Numerous colleagues like Shaggy or Ky-Mani Marley value his personal qualities. He will be performing his current album with his well-attuned band for the

In den letzten 15 Jahren haben die international aner- kannten Fotografinnen Carol Beckwith und Angela Fisher ihre 40-jährige Reise durch Afrika fortgesetzt, um abgelegene Gebiete aufzusuchen und Tausende von Kilometern durch oft extrem unwirtliches Gelände zu fahren, um die traditionellen Zeremonien und Ritu- ale der Menschen, die heute dort leben, aufzunehmen. Sie konnten dabei das Vertrauen von Stammesältes- ten und Heilern gewinnen, die sie an rituellen Zeremo- nien teilnehmen ließen, die normalerweise für Außen- stehende nicht zugänglich sind. Die Bilder, die auch in einem 2-bändigen Buch veröf- fentlicht wurden, zeigen die enorme kulturelle Vielfalt des schwarzen Kontinents und umfassen den gesamten menschlichen Lebenszyklus von der Geburt bis

Afrika verändert sich dramatisch - über 40% von dem, was die Fotografinnen aufgezeichnet haben, existiert nicht mehr. In dieser beeindruckenden Ausstellung werden noch einmal traditionelle Kulturen gezeigt, die es bald nicht mehr zu sehen geben wird! Die Ausstellung besteht aus 26 Farbfotografien und wird vom 17. Mai bis 26. Juli 2019 im Foyer der Uni- versität Würzburg (Sanderring 2, 97070 Würzburg) gezeigt. Zusätzlich zu der Ausstellung werden die beiden Fotografinnen am Samstag, den 01. Juni 2019 um 11:30 Uhr (im Havana Club) im Rahmen eines Vortrags über ihre Arbeit berichten und auch ihr neues Buch vorstellen und signieren.

For the last 15 years, the international accepted photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher have continued their 40 year journey across Africa, seeking out remote communities, crossing thousands of miles through often extremely inhospitable terrain to record the traditional ceremonies of the people living there today. They were able to gain the trust of tribal elders and healers who let them take part in ceremonies which are usually closed to outsiders, The images, which were also released in 2 books, capture the vast cultural diversity of the continent and span the human life cycle from birth to death, The photos range a.o. from fireside rituals around the grass huts of the Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert, to young boys’ initiations into war- riors in the forests of DR Congo and the spectacular mask dancing festivals of Burkina Faso. Africa is changing at a dramatic pace - over 40% of what the photographers have recorded no longer exists. The impressing exhibition shows traditional cultures that will soon vanish! The exhibition consists of 26 colour photos and will take place at the University of Würzburg (Sanderring 2, 97070 Würzburg) from 17 May to 26 July 2019. As an addition to the exhibition, the two photographers will also talk about their work in a lecture, which will take place at Havana Club on Saturday, 01 June 2019 at 11:30 pm. There, they

In Trinidad and Tobago each year thousands of musicians participate with huge percussion groups (sometimes more than 100 people) in the steel band competition “Panorama“. Steel band music was created out of necessity when former slaves used old metal barrels as drums. Today the steel pan is the national instrument of Trinidad and the competition attracts musicians and fans from all around the world. The film music was partly created by the legendary Calypso Rose – who will again be performing at the Africa Festival this year.

Auch zum 31. Internationalen Africa Festival wird es wieder eine Bambushalle geben, in der sich verschiedene Initiativen und Medien präsentieren werden. Der Verein „Mama Afrika“ setzt sich gegen die weibliche Genitalverstümmelung in Guinea ein. Die Initiative „Baobab Children Foundation“ möchte Kin- dern und Jugendlichen in Ghana die Chance auf Bil- dung ermöglichen. Der „Freundeskreis Ombili“ wird über sein Projekt mit den Buschmännern in Namibia informieren. Ebenfalls wird „Terres des femmes“, eine gemeinnützige Menschenrechtsorganisation, die von Gewalt betroffene Mädchen und Frauen unterstützt, und der Verein „Alpensolar Human e. V.“, der die Solartechnik in Afrika vorantreiben will, vertreten sein. Des Weiteren werden das afrikanische Printmagazin LoNam und die taz, die das Festival präsentieren, mit einem Infostand vor Ort sein. Die Informationsstände der Bambushalle sind täglich von 11:00 bis 18:00 Uhr geöffnet.

Der Verein Alpensolar Human e. V. aus dem Allgäu möchte zukünftig die Solartechnik in Afrika Mama Afrika e. V. ist ein gemeinnützig anerkannter deutsch-afrikanischer Verein, welcher vorantreiben, da noch sehr viele Dörfer dort ohne Strom leben. Die Modeschöpferin Rama Diaw aus Saint Louis (Senegal) entwirft seit einigen Jahren moderne afrikanische Mode und Accessoires und verwendet hierbei einheimische Techniken und Mate- rialen wie Batik und Indigostoffe. Alle Materialen die sie verwendet, werden im Senegal, Maure- tanien und Mali eingekauft. Aus ihrer Leidenschaft für Mode ist die Vereinigung „Aissaitou“ ent- standen, die benachteiligte Schneiderinnen, Näherinnen und Stofffärberinnen auf dem Lande zusammenbringt und für Arbeit sorgt. Zur Unterstützung dieses Projektes stellt Afro Project wieder ein kostenloses Zelt mit Laufsteg zur Verfügung und organisiert eine Modenschau mit den Kreationen von Madame Rama. Durch die Kombination von afrikanischem Wax (einem modernen Material) und Rabal (einem traditionellen Stoff) verbindet Diaw die Einfachheit der Formen und die Robustheit des Mate- rials miteinander. Senegalesische und afrikanische Frauen sind feinsinnig und beharrlich. Mit ihrer neuen Modenschau „Perseverance” (Beharrlichkeit) will Madame Rama den Stellenwert der afrikanischen Frauen in der Gesellschaft betonen. Die Modenschau vor dem Zelt von Madame Rama findet Freitag, Samstag und Sonntag um 14:30 Uhr und um 16.30 Uhr neben dem Havana Club statt.

All materials she uses are purchased directly from Senegal, Mauretania and Mali. Because of her passion for fashion she created the federation “Aissaitou”, which brings together underprivileged dressmakers, sewers and cloth dyers in the countryside to offer them work. In order to support this project, Afro Project again provides a tent and catwalk free of charge and organises a fashion show with the creations of Madame Rama. By mixing wax (a modern fabric) and rabal (a traditional fabric) Diaw combines the subtlety of forms and the robustness of matter. Senegalese and African Women are subtle and persevering. With her new fashion show “Perseverance“ Mad- ame Rama wants to emphasize the status of African Women in society. Ein wichtiger Programmpunkt, den wir auch dieses Jahr weiterhin verfolgen, ist das Thema „Afro Deutschland“. Im letzten Jahr konnte sich unter anderem der ISD („Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland e.V.“) als Anlaufstelle für Fragen und Probleme vorstellen, die besonders den täglich selbst erlebten Rassismus betrafen. Diesmal möchten wir mit dem Stichwort „Afro Deutschland Positiv“ Menschen vorstellen, die positiv mit dieser Thema- tik ihren Alltag bewältigen und so neue Weg im Mitei- nander aufzeigen.

Wie Sie wissen, haben wir internationale Stars zum Festival eingeladen, die einen hohen Sicherheitsstandard von uns verlangen. Deshalb sind wir verpflichtet, am Eingang zum Zirkuszelt Taschen etc. nach Waffen zu durchsuchen. Je weniger Sie am Abend mitbringen, desto schneller können Sie eingelassen werden. Sie können auch Ihre Sachen in unsere neuen Schließfächer am Eingang einschließen. Des Weiteren sind Film-, Foto- und Tonbandaufnahmen für Besucher im Zirkuszelt nicht erlaubt.

Nachdem wir von der Stadt Würzburg die Genehmigung bekommen haben, den Havana Club bis 2:00 Uhr nachts zu öffnen, bitten wir alle Besucher sich auf dem Heimweg ruhig zu verhalten. Damit sich unsere Gäste wohlfühlen, behalten wir uns das Recht vor, stark alkoholisierten und aggressiven Besuchern den Zugang zum Festivalgelände zu verwehren. Das Festival war immer ein friedliches Festival und soll es auch bleiben. Die Fahrer des Taxi- standes am Haupteingang werden Sie sicher nach Hause bringen.

We kindly ask you to observe a few rules to ensure a pleasant stay for you and for all our guests:

The smoking ban applies to all tents on the festival ground. Please use the outdoor ashtrays!

Due to security reasons, access to the circus tent can only be allowed for children from the age of 12 years on, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and with a ticket. We kindly point out to our daily free of charge children’s programme and the large sourrounding programme, which offers each child great opportunities to enjoy the festival throughout the day. Parents are personally responsible for supervising their children.

This year again dogs are not allowed on the festival ground. This regulation was requested especially by parents of young children and has proven to be of great help for the peaceful run of the festival.

As we have to finance the surrounding programme of the festival and still want to keep the entrance fee low, we depend on the drinks turnover. For this reason, it is not allowed to bring own beverages to the festival except for children’s drinking bottles. Please dispose of your beverage bottles before entering the festival site. The security is told to search bags and backpacks. There’s a marked place for drinking water at the festival site. Please help us keep the festival site clean and the enormous costs of waste disposal as low as possible!

Advertisements of any kind, especially flyers and leaflets, are not allowed on the festival ground. Please use the trashcans located all over the festival site and do not litter.

We also ask for your fairness towards the security staff at the entrances. They are doing a job which is not always easy. We have invited many international stars to the festival and they require high standards of security. We are therefore obliged to search bags etc. for weapons at the entrance of the circus tent. The less items you bring, the quicker you will be given admittance. You can also use our new lockers at the entrance to store your valuables. Please note that recordings of any kind or taking pictures is not allowed in the circus tent at any time.

The city of Würzburg has given permission to extend the opening hours of our Havana Club to 2:00 am in the morning. We kindly ask all our guests to leave quietly afterwards. In order to make sure that everybody has a good time at the festival and feels safe, we reserve the right to deny drunken and obnoxious guests admittance to the festival ground. The festival has always been known for being a peaceful festival and we would like to keep it that way. There will be a cab stand at the main entrance of the festival. Please do not drink and drive.
