Re: WISBUILD Project Consideration

Dear Sir or Madame:

Please accept this document as my formal letter of interest for consideration for lab planner on state lab projects. I believe that you will find that I have strong business and facilities experience and education to provide an outstanding background for this role as well as the energy and enthusiasm to do it well.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education I have an MBA from the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. This was an outstanding program with emphasis on market research and team case studies. I also have a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree of Architecture from the University of Detroit.

Employment I am a licensed architect with over 20 years in leading architectural academic, governmental and private lab facility planning and design projects as project programmer/planner, project manager or both. I was employed by CRSS in southern California for 2 years, Flad Architects for 17 years and most recently at HOK for four+ years. Earlier I was employed by EDS for 1 ½ years as the manager of Business Planning and Market Research in the Government Systems Division near Washington, DC. Prior to that, I was employed by General Motors in various key planning roles, including Chevrolet Product Planning.

My recent architectural/lab planning work experience includes many chemistry, biology, analytical, research and university labs in fields of energy, pharmaceutical, federal, public health, university and other areas. The following are a few of the projects for which I have provided project management and/or lab planning services:

 University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Energy Institute, Madison, WI 107,000 GSF ‐ Lab planner for a new interdisciplinary, alternative energy research institute.  University of Wyoming, Wyoming Energy Resource Center, Laramie, WY. 55,460 GSF - Lab planner for the planning and design of the new energy resource center. • KAUST, Saudi Arabia. 48,800 GSF – Lab Planner for lab areas within the highly interdisciplinary research lab complex.  US Army Medical Institute for Chemical Defense (USAMRICD), Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. 383,000 GSF ‐ Lab planner for the programming, planning, and schematic design of the chemical agent research facility.  US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine (USACHPPM), Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. 300,000 GSF ‐ Lab planner for the program verification and schematic design of this office, lab, field lab and vivarium facility.  Wyeth R&D Strategic Planning, Various Locations, US and Italy.

My recent business work experience includes a range of renovation, new construction and studies/analysis. Some of the potentially applicable activities include the following:

 While at HOK, I had the opportunity to work with the casework manufacturer to develop a new contemporary designed line of casework for the Wisconsin Energy Institute. Much of this was my design initially to comply with the client needs. Various pieces included the 1’ X 2’ ceiling interface panels (for utilities) that integrated into the acoustical ceiling grid. Another included the heavy duty casework with a high density of power plugs, all meeting standards and codes.  I developed a “Design to Budget” tool while at Flad Architects that we used to help derive the range of preferred cost levels by category of cost.  With others at Flad, I developed an organized lab programming process that leads the client through the steps of programming and design of a highly technical building.  I developed a Drawing Log process for keeping track and quantifying the status of the work that still needs to be done.  I have led countless architectural programming projects, with an interest in developing new and applicable processes that help the client or team to get what is needed out of the process.

Please refer to the enclosed resume and experience summary matrix for more details on project type, project size, my role, and phases of involvement.

Personal Interests

The prospect of working for the State of Wisconsin System is appealing to me after years of working in other states and countries. I would enjoy the opportunity to get to know people in my home state better, and continue to reside in Middleton. I was born in Baraboo, and own part of our family property and cabin north of Baraboo.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response and hope for the opportunity to demonstrate my expertise and professionalism in working for and with the UW System Administration.

Respectfully submitted,
