Atwater-Donnelly; Friday, January 4th; 8pm This duo from Rhode Island has performed throughout the US, and their many albums have received international airplay. Aubrey and Ellwood have presented and researched folk music extensively in New England, Ireland, England, Prince Edward Island, the Ozarks and Appalachia. They perform traditional ballads, original works, dance tunes, gospel and old time songs, including a capella pieces, all with wonderful harmonies. Aubrey Atwater plays banjo, guitar, tin whistle and mountain dulcimer. Elwood Don- nelly plays guitar, harmonica and a variety of percussion instruments including monkey pods, bones, spoons, bodhran and limber jack. They explain song origins and create a humorous and relaxed stage presence. Audience participation is strongly encouraged. Presented with the cooperation of Polytechnic University: Admission: $10 (members, $9, Polytech students & staff free). At: Polytechnic University, Wunsch Hall, just over the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridges in Brooklyn; right off the Tillary St. exit from the BQE. (See map, page 10.) Sunday, February 3 - TBA. Jack Langstaff; Saturday, January 12th; 8pm John ‘Jack’ Langstaff is, even at age 81, one of the great voices of traditional music, in every sense of those words. A genuine love of the old songs, and an understanding of the people from whom they came, radiates through Jack’s singing. But in addition Jack is also a carrier of more than 65 years of the folk music and dance revival, and the people he has known and the places he has been and sung form a major part of the evolution of the revival to its present richness. Jack was born in Brooklyn in 1920. He was already a soloist as a young boy soprano in church choir and had performed in major concerts before he was 12 years old. His parents both sang and had books of folk songs, principally Sharp’s collections, in the home. Music gatherings with folk songs were a regular part of family life, and the earliest songs he remembers were sung to him in his bed by his mother. Jack first heard the living tradition when a teacher took him down to the White Top Festival in North Carolina in 1934. He first came to Pinewoods Camp that same sum- mer, and he started the first Folk Music Week in 1952, out of which grew the Pine- woods Club and so many of the folk societies that are now spreading the music far and wide. He has had a life-long career as an educator as well as a singer, and is a staunch advocate for the power of traditional music, dance, and movement in the growth of children. Through his teaching, his books, through Folk Music Week and the Revels, and through the countless people he has inspired, Jack, perhaps along with Pete Seeger, is probably more responsible for getting people, including many who have never heard of him, involved in the music than anyone alive. It is perhaps unique among concert-trained singers to find someone who can bring the listener into the song and into the tradition in the way Jack can. He carries true magic in his performances. Jerry Epstein will accompany him on concertina, guitar, and piano. Bring your voices and be ready to sing.. You won’t be able to resist. AT: Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway & 93rd St. Members: $11, General Public $15, Seniors/limited income: $11, under 12 $6.

VAUGHN RAMSEY WARD 1939 - 2001 The Club mourns the passing of a friend almost from our beginning, and a leading light in New York State folklore. Vaughn Ward died early in December after a battle with cancer. She was 62. Coming from a white, Methodist, rather uniform melieu in Oklahoma and New Mexico, Vaughn became fascinated with the ethnic diversity to be found in New York State. A real mover and shaker, Vaughn made things happen in the preservation of customs, stories, and songs, producing festivals, conferences, books, and written documents of all kinds which featured the people from the ethnic communities telling their own story for their own community, but to all of us as well. She was a tireless champion for the importance of the old ways, and she understood how critical it was to show to the communities themselves that their customs were a treasure to be kept and should be a source of pride. She also developed a program in which young people would collect the traditions from their own communities, gaining thereby a respect for the old people and their ways that could not be communicated by words from an outsider. She is survived by her husband George, a fine musician, singer and songwriter, and by two sons, Peter and Nathaniel. Our hearts go out to them. -Jerry Epstein
