Broad-scale phylogenetic analyses of the angiosperms and of the Asteridae have failed to confidently resolve relationships among the major lineages of the campanulid Asteridae (i.e., the euasterid II of APG II, 2003). To address this problem we assembled presently available sequences for a core set of 50 taxa, representing the diver- sity of the four largest lineages (Apiales, Aquifoliales, Asterales, Dipsacales) as well as the smaller “unplaced” groups (e.g., Bruniaceae, Paracryphiaceae, Columelliaceae). We constructed four data matrices for phylogenetic analysis: a chloroplast coding matrix (atpB, matK, ndhF, rbcL), a chloroplast non-coding matrix (rps16 intron, trnT-F region, trnV-atpE IGS), a combined chloroplast dataset (all seven chloroplast regions), and a combined genome matrix (seven chloroplast regions plus 18S and 26S rDNA). Bayesian analyses of these datasets using mixed substitution models produced often well-resolved and supported trees. -

The New Zealand Rain Forest: A Comparison with Tropical Rain Forest! J. W. DAWSON2 and B. V. SNEDDON2 ABSTRACT: The structure of and growth forms and habits exhibited by the New Zealand rain forest are described and compared with those of lowland tropical rain forest. Theories relating to the frequent regeneration failure of the forest dominants are outlined. The floristic affinities of the forest type are discussed and it is suggested that two main elements can be recognized-lowland tropical and montane tropical. It is concluded that the New Zealand rain forest is comparable to lowland tropical rain forest in structure and in range of special growth forms and habits. It chiefly differs in its lower stature, fewer species, and smaller leaves. The floristic similarity between the present forest and forest floras of the Tertiary in New Zealand suggest that the former may be a floristically reduced derivative of the latter. Gardner (Alseuosmiaceae Airy Shaw) from the Volcanic Plateau, North Island, New Zealand is described and illustrated. A. linariifolia A. Cunn. is reduced to a variety of A. banksii A. Cunn. and A. quercifolia A. Cunn. is given hybrid status (=^4. banksii A. Cunn. x A. macrophylla A. Cunn.). A key to the four Alseuosmia species, synonymy, and a generalised distribution map are given. A. pusilla Col. is illustrated for the first time. H. & SEPPELT, R. D. 2002. Resupinate fungi (Basidiomycetes, Aphyllophorales) of Macquarie Island, Australia. Hikobia 13: 745-750. Fourteen collections of resupinate higher fungi in the order Aphyllophorales (Basidiomycetes) were made on Subantarctic Macquarie Island (54°30'S, 158°57' E) in 1995. Of the 14, three proved to lack species-determining characteristic basidiospores and 12 were determined to belong to three species in two genera; Athelopsis lembospora (Bourdot) Oberwinkler, Athelopsis subinconspicua (Lirschauer) Julich, the first report of this species from the Southern Hemisphere, and Epithele galzinii Bres., the first reportr of E. galzinii from an Australian territory and also representing a southern range extension by several hundred kilometers. None are endemic and all are suspected to have reached the Island by long-distance transoceanic wind dispersal from other southern continental sources. Their habitats are restricted to old and clustered culms, frond bracts, and leaf petioles of the fern Polystichum vestitum (G. Forst.) C. Presl, the raised pedestals of old giant russock grass stem bases of Poa foliosa (Hook. f-) Hook. f., and the woody, but thin, stems of Acaena magellanica (Lam.) Curators Report Spring Flowering Once again Fernglen Gardens were left without curator while contract issues were being sorted with the new 2. Pest Free Kaipatiki contracting company to the council. Many thanks to Kelly the Treasurer for her perseverance in ensuring Mal- colm’s contract to maintain the gardens was reinstated. The Kaipātiki Restoration Network brings together volunteer bush restoration groups in Northcote, Birken- Early spring flowering plants such as carmine rata and rangiora have done their dash, but there are lots of head, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Glenfield and other parts of the Kaipatiki Local Board area with support from specimens flowering in their wake. Several Three Kings Islands plants are worth mentioning. The bushy milk specialists in the Parks, Biodiversity and Biosecurity Departments. Fernglen has been participating in the Pest tree, Paratrophis smithii, is sporting a great array of male spikes on its long branches. A bit nearer the road, Free Kaipatiki project. There are more than 160 reserves in the Kaipatiki Local Board area, we have some the rare plant Pennantia baylisiana, is producing buds. Still closer to the road a 4m high hybrid Pennantia is work to do to stay on top of pest populations. Some of our volunteer groups have begun a pest monitoring, covered with inflorescence. Next to this specimen is kaikomako, and setting traps. Another Three Kings plant worth looking at, just below the Alpine House, is Elingamita johnsonii, which is displaying dozens of berries. -

Breeding systems and reproduction of indigenous shrubs in fragmented ecosystems A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy III Plant Ecology at Massey University by Merilyn F Merrett .. � ... : -- �. � Massey University Palrnerston North, New Zealand 2006 Abstract Sixteen native shrub species with various breeding systems and pollination syndromes were investigated in geographically separated populations to determine breeding systems, reproductive success, population structure, and habitat characteristics. Of the sixteen species, seven are hermaphroditic, seven dioecious, and two gynodioecious. Two of the dioecious species are cryptically dioecious, producing what appear to be perfect, hermaphroditic flowers,but that functionas either male or female. One of the study species, Raukauaanomalus, was thought to be dioecious, but proved to be hermaphroditic. Teucridium parvifolium, was thought to be hermaphroditic, but some populations are gynodioecious. There was variation in self-compatibility among the fo ur AIseuosmia species; two are self-compatible and two are self-incompatible. Self incompatibility was consistent amongst individuals only in A. quercifolia at both study sites, whereas individuals in A. macrophylia ranged from highly self-incompatible to self-compatible amongst fo ur study sites. The remainder of the hermaphroditic study species are self-compatible. Five of the species appear to have dual pollination syndromes, e.g., bird-moth, wind-insect, wind-animal. High levels of pollen limitation were identified in three species at fo ur of the 34 study sites.
