Curators Report Spring Flowering Once again Fernglen Gardens were left without curator while contract issues were being sorted with the new 2. Pest Free Kaipatiki contracting company to the council. Many thanks to Kelly the Treasurer for her perseverance in ensuring Mal- colm’s contract to maintain the gardens was reinstated. The Kaipātiki Restoration Network brings together volunteer bush restoration groups in Northcote, Birken- Early spring flowering plants such as carmine rata and rangiora have done their dash, but there are lots of head, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Glenfield and other parts of the Kaipatiki Local Board area with support from specimens flowering in their wake. Several Three Kings Islands plants are worth mentioning. The bushy milk specialists in the Parks, Biodiversity and Biosecurity Departments. Fernglen has been participating in the Pest tree, Paratrophis smithii, is sporting a great array of male spikes on its long branches. A bit nearer the road, Free Kaipatiki project. There are more than 160 reserves in the Kaipatiki Local Board area, we have some the rare plant Pennantia baylisiana, is producing buds. Still closer to the road a 4m high hybrid Pennantia is work to do to stay on top of pest populations. Some of our volunteer groups have begun a pest monitoring, covered with inflorescence. Next to this specimen is kaikomako, and setting traps. Another Three Kings plant worth looking at, just below the Alpine House, is Elingamita johnsonii, which is displaying dozens of berries. -

Sockman. iii iv General Abstract Aim The Island Rule refers to a continuum of body size changes where large mainland species evolve to become smaller and small species evolve to become larger on islands. Previous work focuses almost solely on animals, with virtually no previous tests of its predictions on plants. I tested for (1) reduced floral size diversity on islands, a logical corollary of the island rule and (2) evidence of the Island Rule in plant stature, leaf size and petiole length. Location Small islands surrounding New Zealand; Antipodes, Auckland, Bounty, Campbell, Chatham, Kermadec, Lord Howe, Macquarie, Norfolk, Snares, Stewart and the Three Kings. Methods I compared the morphology of 65 island endemics and their closest ‘mainland’ relative. Species pairs were identified. Differences between archipelagos located at various latitudes were also assessed. Results Floral sizes were reduced on islands relative to the ‘mainland’, consistent with predictions of the Island Rule. Plant stature, leaf size and petiole length conformed to the Island Rule, with smaller plants increasing in size, and larger plants decreasing in size. Main conclusions Results indicate that the conceptual umbrella of the Island Rule can be expanded to plants, accelerating understanding of how plant traits evolve on isolated islands. -

Нилова, а. а. оскольский Исследовано анатомическое строение первичной коры, вторичной флоэмы и перидермы представителей родов Griselinia (сем. Griseliniaceae) и Pennantia (сем. Pennantiaceae), т.е. двух монофилетических групп, рано отошедших от основания крупной клады, объединяющей семейства Araliaceae, Apiaceae, Myodocarpaceae и Pittosporaceae (подпорядок Apiineae порядка Apiales). Наиболее существенные различия между родами касаются типа кристаллов и локализации кристаллоносных клеток в коре. Клетки с призматическими кристаллами в первичной коре Pennantia расположены только между группами волокон первичной флоэмы; подобное их распределение впервые отмечено для Apiales. В коре изученных таксонов отсутствуют секреторные каналы или вместилища; вместе с тем в клетках кортикальной паренхимы Pennantia отмечены многочисленные липидные капли, что можно предположительно рассматривать как начальный этап становления секреторной системы, свойственной всем представителям Apiineae. PhytoKeys 155: 15–32. https://doi.org/10.3897/ phytokeys.155.53460 Abstract Pennantia, which comprises four species distributed in Australasia, was the subject of a monographic taxonomic treatment based on morphological characters in 2002. When this genus has been included in molecular phylogenies, it has usually been represented by a single species, P. corymbosa J.R.Forst. & G.Forst., or occasionally also by P. cunninghamii Miers. This study presents the first dated phylogenetic analysis encompassing all species of the genus Pennantia and using chloroplast DNA. The nuclear riboso- mal 18S–26S repeat region is also investigated, using a chimeric reference sequence against which reads not mapping to the chloroplast genome were aligned. This mapping of off-target reads proved valuable in exploiting otherwise discarded data, but with rather variable success. -

Photo: Jeremy Rolfe. New Zealand Threat Classification Series is a scientific monograph series presenting publications related to the New Zealand Threat Classification System (NZTCS). Most will be lists providing NZTCS status of members of a plant or animal group (e.g. algae, birds, spiders). There are currently 23 groups, each assessed once every 3 years. After each 3-year cycle there will be a report analysing and summarising trends across all groups for that listing cycle. From time to time the manual that defines the categories, criteria and process for the NZTCS will be reviewed. Publications in this series are considered part of the formal international scientific literature. This report is available from the departmental website in pdf form. Threatened Plants of Northland
Sicyos australis sensu lato mawhai At least two distinct species appear to exist in this taxon: S. australis sensu stricto and S. aff. australis (AK 252822; New Zealand). Status Sicyos australis sensu stricto – Nationally Critical; S. aff. australis – Serious Decline. Description Recent record Historic record A sprawling, cucumber-like vine with small (8–12 mm diameter) prickly fruit. Stems are up to 4 m or more long, with long, branched, spirally coiled tendrils. Leaves have toothed edges and five prominently pointed lobes. The hairs on the stems and leaf stalks are bristle-like and stick out from the stem or stalk. Plants bear either male or female flowers. Flowers are small, white or greenish, up to 10 mm diameter and on short stalks; males in spikes of more than 10 flowers and females in clusters of up to 14. Fruits are 8–12 mm long, oval and compressed in shape, covered with sharply barbed, spiny bristles which it is best to avoid contact with. Flowering occurs in January-February. Sicyos aff. australis is distinguished by having leaves with 5–7 rounded lobes, finer marginal teeth; hairs on the stems and leaf stalks are curved downwards (sometimes abruptly) and shaggy in appearance; stems are slightly thicker; flowers that are slightly larger and can number up to 20. Fruiting occurs in January and there are differences in the chromosome number (Delmiglio & Pearson 2002). Similar species None Habitat Coastal scrub. Distribution Sicyos australis sensu stricto occurs on mainland New Zealand from Northland to the Bay of Plenty. Sicyos aff. australis occurs on islands from the Three Kings to Mayor Island. -

E-NEWSLETTER: NO 80. JULY 2010 Deadline for next issue: Monday 16 August 2010 Message from the President I’m pleased to see some excellent articles in this month’s newsletter. Please keep sending them in. It is good news that the government has decided not to mine the lands protected by Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act. We have recently written to the Minister of Conservation, asking to meet with her to discuss the legal protection of New Zealand’s threatened plant species. As you will be aware, a number of animal species, such as katipo have been recently granted legal protection, but we have yet to get any legal protection for our plant species that are on the brink of extinction. As an adjunct to last month’s editorial focus on ecosourcing, an interesting tool to assist in determining how “original” a patch of vegetation may be, is being developed by an invertebrate scientist. Sourcing seed can be a problem where much of the original vegetation has been cleared and seed collectors can be unsure as to whether or not their source vegetation has been planted. Nicholas Martin has been working on developing fact sheets for herbivorous invertebrates that could be used for such purposes. Some invertebrate herbivores of our native plant species are quite immobile (as a population) and their presence is a good indicator of the “originality” of the vegetation patch. Nicholas has said that he will write something on this topic for the next newsletter. PLANT OF THE MONTH – MERYTA SINCLAIRII Plant of the Month for July is Meryta sinclairii (pukanui or puka). -

Because of this, it and all other indigenous myrtle species have been designated as Threatened in this assessment.
