  • Addams Family Values: a Campy Cult Classic
Addams Family Values: A Campy Cult Classic By: Katie Baranauskas The Addams family is quite the odd bunch. Created by Charles Addams in a 1938 comic strip, the family has received countless renditions of their misadventures, including the 1993 sequel to The Addams Family: Addams Family Values. This is a rare instance in which the sequel is better than the original. The cast is by far one of the best, including greats like Anjelica Huston as Morticia, Christina Ricci as Wednesday, and Christopher Lloyd as Fester, as well as so many others. Every actor plays to their strengths, as well as their character's strengths, to craft a wonderful mix of comedy and drama. Some characters such as Fester and Gomez Addams have extreme slapstick comedy, whereas other characters such as Wednesday and Morticia Addams have a dry humor that also makes the audience chuckle: no laugh track needed. Along with all these fantastic characters comes an equally fantastic villain in Debbie Jelinsky, played by Joan Cusack. Debbie is immediately explored as a two-faced black widow, who will do anything to get the wealth and opulence she desires. Joan Cusack did the absolute most in this performance, and she looked fabulous as well. All of this is topped with an amazing script, which produced hundreds of lines I use to this day. A whole other article could be written on the iconic quotes from this movie, but my all-time favorite has to be when Morticia tells Debbie in the most monotone voice, "All that I could forgive, but Debbie… pastels?" This movie has just the right balance of creepiness and camp, reminding me of a Disney story set in a Tim Burton-esque world, where being "weird" is the new normal and everything is tinged with a gothic filter.

DVDs and DVD Extras That Help Teach The Language of Film Copyright 2010, by Frank W. Baker – Media Literacy Clearinghouse This page is not intended to be an exhaustive, all-inclusive list, but rather a list of some DVDs that I am aware of and have watched that I think could be used in classes where “film literacy” and “film fluency” is being taught. There’s nothing like reading a book about film, but viewing, analyzing and deconstructing are best when you have access to films, and extras, that will help your students better understand the languages of film. • Sawbones 335: Grounded for Life Published 14Th August 2020 Listen Here on Themcelroy.Family
Sawbones 335: Grounded for Life Published 14th August 2020 Listen here on themcelroy.family Intro (Clint McElroy): Sawbones is a show about medical history, and nothing the hosts say should be taken as medical advice or opinion. It‟s for fun. Can‟t you just have fun for an hour and not try to diagnose your mystery boil? We think you‟ve earned it. Just sit back, relax and enjoy a moment of distraction from that weird growth. You‟re worth it. [theme music plays] Justin: Hello everybody, and welcome to Sawbones: a marital tour of misguided medicine. I‟m your cohost, Justin McElroy. Sydnee: And I‟m Sydnee McElroy. Justin: And Sydnee, you wanted to open this week‟s episode talking about animated films. Is that correct? Sydnee: I wanted to, or you wanted to? Justin: You wanted to, you said, “I got a lot to say about these.” Sydnee: I don‟t. Justin: “No one reached out to me about my opinions on watching animated movies.” Sydnee: [laughs] Justin: And you just wanted to really put everybody on blast. Is that how I understand it? Sydnee: No, that is not accurate whatsoever. Justin: You don‟t wanna talk about animated movies. Sydnee: I just— okay. I don‟t, but now you have put me in this position, so now I am forced to. Last week, of course, we reviewed Osmosis Jones, and I would like to— Justin: [snorts] “Reviewed” is quite a choice. Sydnee: Evaluated, explored Osmosis Jones. And I would like to say that my statement that I didn‟t know who this movie was for is not based on a belief that I don‟t think adults should or can or would benefit from watching animated movies at all.

  • 275. – Part One
    275. – PART ONE 275. Clifford (1994) Okay, here’s the deal: I don’t know you, you don’t know me, but if you are anywhere near a television right now I need you to stop whatever it is that you’re doing and go watch “Clifford” on HBO Max. This is another film that has a 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes which just leads me to believe that all of the critics who were popular in the nineties didn’t have a single shred of humor in any of their non-existent funny bones. I loved this movie when I was seven, and I love it even more when I’m thirty-three. It’s genius. Martin Short (who at the time was forty-four) plays a ten-year-old hyperactive nightmare child from hell. I mean it, this kid might actually be the devil. He is straight up evil, conniving, manipulative and all-told probably causes no less than ten million dollars-worth of property damage. And, again, the plot is so simple – he just wants to go to Dinosaur World. There are so many comedy films with such complicated plots and motivations for their characters, but the simplistic genius of “Clifford” is just this – all this kid wants on the entire planet is to go to Dinosaur World. That’s it. The movie starts with him and his parents on an plane to Hawaii for a business trip, and Clifford knows that Dinosaur Land is in Los Angeles, therefore he causes so much of a ruckus that the plane has to make an emergency landing.

EXPOSURE TO SEXUAL MEDIA AND COLLEGE STUDENTS’ SEXUAL RISK-TAKING AND SEXUAL REGRET BY YUANYUAN ZHANG DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Kristen Harrison, Chair Professor David Tewksbury, Director of Research Professor Barbara J. Wilson Professor Travis L. Dixon, University of California, Los Angeles Abstract Sexual risk-taking represents a significant health problem among college students. Although media may play an important role in college students’ sexual risk-taking, research in this area has been sparse. Using social cognitive theory as the theoretical framework, this dissertation aimed to achieve three goals. First, the study sought to examine how exposure to sexual content in six media (i.e., television, songs, music videos, movies watched at home, movies watched in the theater, and magazines) might be related to college students’ sexual risk-taking. Second, the study investigated a list of moderators that might influence the relationship between media exposure and sexual risk-taking. Five moderators (i.e., gender [femaleness], race [whiteness], sensation seeking, positive premarital sexual attitudes, and endorsement of the sexual double standard) were proposed to strengthen the relationship, and three moderators (i.e., school performance, religiosity, and parental monitoring) were proposed to weaken the relationship. Lastly, the study explored whether sexual media exposure may be linked to sexual regret indirectly through its effect on sexual risk-taking. The main project was an online survey completed by 561college students. To assist the investigation, three subprojects were conducted beforehand.
