  • A Taxonomic Survey of Lotus Section Pedrosia (Leguminosae, Loteae) Graeme Sandral, Margarita V

Remizowa & Dmitry D. Sokoloff Summary: A taxonomic review of the section Pedrosia (excl. sect. Rhyncholotus) is presented. Members of the section occur in the Macaronesian Islands, north-western part of Africa and in the Mediterranean region. Centers of diversity are Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and Morocco. Twenty nine species of the section are recognized; their diagnostic characters are discussed and extensively illustrated. An identifi cation key to species of the section is given as well as morphological descriptions of species and subspecies. Leaf morphology was found to be a particularly useful character in species discrimination. Many species are quite variable, and their identifi cation is only possible using a suite of several characters. Furthermore, various morphological characters have different taxonomic weight in different regions (e.g. Cape Verde and Morocco). The following taxonomic decisions are adopted: (1) Lotus azoricus is synonymous with L . argyrodes; (2) L . tenellus is accepted as a species distinct from L . glaucus, with an area covering Tenerife and Gran Canaria; (3) all material examined from Hierro (Canary Islands) is identifi ed asL . sessilifolius; (4) L . hillebrandii is treated as a subspecies of L . campylocladus; (5) L . spartioides is synonymous with L . holosericus. Representatives of the section Pedrosia from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are closer to those from Madeira than to plants from other Canary Islands. Keywords: Fabaceae, Leguminosae, Loteae, Lotus, Pedrosia, taxonomy, determination key, typifi cation, comb.

Abstract. The use of plants to treat chronic diseases is part of an ancient Moroccan tradition. This study will present the first relevant documentation on medicinal plants used in the treatment of hypertension in Tarfaya province. This study aimed to collect and document information on medicinal plants traditionally used by the local population of Tarfaya province for the treatment of hypertension. Ethnobotanical surveys were conducted using 150 questionnaires in the study area. Documented data were evaluated using the quantitative ethno-botanical indices of frequency citation (FC) and Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC). The results obtained allowed to inventory 52 species of medicinal plants belonging to 29 families traditionally used against hypertension. The species were rich in diverse chemical constituents. The most cited families are Lamiaceae (9 species), Apiaceae (5 species), Compositae (3 species), Leguminosae (3 species) and Myrtaceae (3 species). Ten plants are reported for the first time as used in the treatment of hypertension.

  • NOSTALGIC LIVES: MEMORY and PLACE in SIDI IFNI a Dissertation
NOSTALGIC LIVES: MEMORY AND PLACE IN SIDI IFNI A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Annarose Yamuna Pandey February 2010 © 2010 Annarose Yamuna Pandey NOSTALGIC LIVES: MEMORY AND PLACE IN SIDI IFNI Annarose Yamuna Pandey, Ph. D. Cornell University 2010 This dissertation is about the role of space and memory in Sidi Ifni, Morocco. Through analysis of stories I was told during my stay, I argue that multiple temporal frameworks can coexist in the present as a way of reproducing the past and re-conceptualizing the future. These stories are the product of a dialectic that is itself structured by such social structures as kinship and gender. I use personal accounts of townspeople to discuss the ways that social identity is produced and contextualized in this town. Sidi Ifni’s history is located in the nexus of Moroccan nationalist goals, Spanish colonial ideals, and local Berber ways of life. Beginning with nostalgic memories of a particular Spanish woman, Maria, I work to show the ways that people’s imaginings of the past are quite present in quotidian life. The second chapter is an exploration of the construction of “otherness” in the context of multiple readings of history and memory. People’s control of authority and power is reproduced through the work they do to establish meaning and memory. The third chapter is concerned with a polyvocal historical account of Sidi Ifni’s relationship to the Western Sahara. King Hassan II’s claim to “Greater Morocco” was in direct opposition to Franco’s notion of a Spanish “embrace of Africa”.
