GOOD TACKS – are smooth Well practiced, well timed tacks! DON’T JAM THE TILLER OVER move tiller smoothly, consistently don’t put breaks on DON’T rock the boat, keep heel consistent UPWIND – THE LIFTED TACK • Lifted tack: there will always be one tack taking you closer to the mark • If you see your bow dropping against the shoreline – you are being headed – BAD! • If you see and feel you boat pointing close to the windward mark – you are being lifted – GOOD! UPWIND LEG – PLANNING • Look up the lake – look for dark water • Where are the WIND SHIFTS? Be deliberate when you tack Don’t tack too often Tack in a smooth arc to maintain speed; sharp tacks are car breaks, slow you down WINDWARD MARK Entering the circle - 3 boat lengths from the mark, Boats overlapping and on the inside at 3 boat length have right-of-way Three boat lengths circle BAD: boat A did not complete its tack GOOD: A has reached the 3 boat (before the three boat lengths zone), it lengths circle and completed its tack has no rights and has fouled B. onto starboard gaining overlap on B. Boat A must spin to exonerate itself. B must give A room to round the mark. mark offset DON’T UNDERSTAND the line. Too far below, must pinch to the mark, slow, don’t make it. Who has the layline? Who will have rights? • Get to layline too late and you are stuck below a line of starboard tackers Don’t run into the mark or the off set! RUNNING DOWNWIND DOWNWIND LEG • HEEL YOUR BOAT, DON’T ROCK YOUR BOAT • Low wind – sit on same side as sail • Med/high wind – sit opposite sail, hike GIVE WAY TO BOATS GOING UPWIND WINDWARD/LEEWARD RULES DOWNWIND LEG Don't sail straight down wind on long course. It's faster to sail slightly off the wind wind LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING Three boat lengths rules apply at the leeward mark as well - Inside and overlapped has rights. LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING • WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE HEADING UPWIND? • PRACTICE ROUNDING – WIDE IN AND LEAVE CLOSE LEEWARD MARK ROUNDING Prep to round with a soft arc to keep momentum: start wide and then finish close to the mark Sheet in as you are rounding up to mark: After you round the mark, review position and then readjust your upwind course plans; sail fast! 2nd Upwind Leg • Watch the wind shifts – where are the wind shifts up the lake? • Where is everyone going? • How can I keep John behind me?
