Laser Class Rules - One Design One of the attractions of the Laser for most owners is that the class rules are very strict and that the boat is one design. The Laser philosophy incorporated in the rules is that we want to go sailing, not waste time fddling with boats. We want to win races on the water using our skill, not by trying to fnd a way round the rules that will give us an advantage. The class rules are written to prevent any changes from the standard boat that might affect performance, so that on the water each boat is the same. The few changes to the standard boat that are allowed are minor and only to allow for a few options that make racing the Laser more comfortable and enjoyable. Over the years the class has refused to make changes to the rules that allow more expensive or complicated equipment or which makes older boats redundant. If you feel you want to change something on a Laser - STOP. Ask yourself why you want to do it? If the answer is “to make me go faster” there is a very good chance the modifcation or addition is illegal! Take a look at the Laser Rules. • Part One explains the Fundamental Class Rule which covers the philosophy and any item not specifcally written into the rules. • Part Two tells you what you must do to have a legal boat. • Part Three details a few optional changes and additions you can make. If Part Three does not specifcally allow a change or addition - IT IS ILLEGAL! If you race a Laser that has a change or addition not allowed by the class rules you will be disqualifed from the race. -

Aerodynamics of High-Performance Wing Sails J. otto Scherer^ Some of tfie primary requirements for tiie design of wing sails are discussed. In particular, ttie requirements for maximizing thrust when sailing to windward and tacking downwind are presented. The results of water channel tests on six sail section shapes are also presented. These test results Include the data for the double-slotted flapped wing sail designed by David Hubbard for A. F. Dl Mauro's lYRU "C" class catamaran Patient Lady II. Introduction The propulsion system is probably the single most neglect ed area of yacht design. The conventional triangular "soft" sails, while simple, practical, and traditional, are a long way from being aerodynamically desirable. The aerodynamic driving force of the sails is, of course, just as large and just as important as the hydrodynamic resistance of the hull. Yet, designers will go to great lengths to fair hull lines and tank test hull shapes, while simply drawing a triangle on the plans to define the sails. There is no question in my mind that the application of the wealth of available airfoil technology will yield enormous gains in yacht performance when applied to sail design. Re cent years have seen the application of some of this technolo gy in the form of wing sails on the lYRU "C" class catamar ans. In this paper, I will review some of the aerodynamic re quirements of yacht sails which have led to the development of the wing sails. For purposes of discussion, we can divide sail require ments into three points of sailing: • Upwind and close reaching. -

I’m here to talk about a belief in and a passion for shoal-draft boats, particularly the development of the Round Bottomed Sharpie. I started sailing in centreboard dinghies and that excitement has returned with these boats. As you’ll see these 2 boats have become known as Presto Boats. NEW HAVEN OYSTER- TONGING SHARPIE By definition a Sharpie is a flat-bottomed boat and a New Haven oyster-tonging sharpie looked like this. They were easy to build with their box shape & simple rigs but the boat is an ingenious piece of function and efficiency. The stern is round so the tongs don’t snag on transom corners; the freeboard is low so it’s easy to swing the tongs on board and the long centreboard trunk stops the oysters from shifting SEA OF ABACO 3 under sail. NEW HAVEN SHARPIE RIG The unstayed masts rotate through 360 degrees so the oystermen would sail to windward of the oyster beds and let the sails stream out over the bow while drifting over the beds tonging away. The sails are self-tending and self-vanged so handling is very easy. The boats are fast when loaded so you can get the oysters fresh to market. Oyster bars in big cities were the Starbucks of the late 1800s. You’d pop in for a ½ dozen as a pick-me-up. 4 On the right is an Outward Bound 30 to our design. With our contemporary Sharpies we’ve retained the principles of the traditional rig; it works as well today as it did in the 1800s. -

Spring 1991 $1.50 Pennsylvania • The Keystone States Official Boating Magazine Viewpoint Recently we received a letter suggesting that we were being contradictory in Boat Pennsylvania. According to one reader, we suggested that boaters wear personal flota- tion devices, but that the magazine photographs don't always show their use. Obtaining photographs for a magazine can be a difficult proposition. Sometimes we stage situations and take the photographs ourselves. More often, we rely on photographs submitted by contributors. Photos that depict the general boating public often do not show people wearing PFDs simply because the incidence of wearing them is so low. If we were to say that we would only use photos that showed boaters wearing PFDs, we would have a difficult time fmding acceptable photos. Generally, we try to show people wearing PFDs in small boats in situations in which devices should obviously be worn. On large boats, people most often do not wear their PFDs. Should people wear PFDs? Statistics show that wearing a PFD can save your life. Are PFDs needed all the time? Because accidents happen when they are least expected, wearing a PFD all the time is a good idea. Practically, however, as comfortable as the newest PFDs are, they can be excruciating on a hot July day. Many boaters also want to get a little sun. We accept this and our statistics show that the chances of having an accident where a PFD would have been a factor are much lower in the summer months. Ofcourse, circumstances do exist in which wearing a PFD,even on the hottest day, is warranted. -

Day two of sailing at the 2004 Olympics started out just like day one: sunny and gaspingly hot, with only about three knots of wind. And just like the day before, I called up to the committee boat, “Good morning—USA.” At this regatta, I checked in not as myself or as the skipper of a three-person team, but as an entire country. What a rush. I remember that moment perfectly, but it’s taken me 10 years to swallow my pride enough to write about what followed. And I’m only going to do it once, so listen up. Day two started out very light and ended up very windy. Fortunately our Olympic branding held up to the change in conditions better than we did. Photo: ©DanielForster STARTING STRONG Th e Saronic Gulf rippled and heat-shimmered beneath the light easterly, which we hoped would build to meet the fi ve-knot minimum in time for racing. In similar conditions the day before, we’d fi nished second in the very fi rst race of our week-long event. So I’d chosen the same clothing: white long-sleeved shirt, light-colored leggings, white USA hat. Liz had gone with short sleeves and Nancy sported a tank top, but we were unifi ed by our Team USA regatta pinnies. And in case we forgot our last names, all we had to do was look up—they’d been stuck on the mainsail in bold letters, just below a large American fl ag. -

The boat reluc- tantly responds, the mast tilting skyward, rising from the sea. I taste the salt of ocean spray that catches me unaware after so many years of sailing fresh-waters. Equilibrium restored, seawater emptying through the automatic bailers, our sailboat moves across the water in ecological tension between human, craft, wind, and geography. Martin tends to the navigation, attentive weight- ing of hand on tiller, as I set the jib and cleat the sheet. Shifting body weight, secured by the trapeze,I feel the arc of body, an embodied inter- pretation of movement in response to the wind’s presence in the tautness of the sails. 1998 Lake Michigan Crew Over Board Study Provided by the Lake Michigan Sail Racing Federation (LMSRF) This is an effort to encompass Offshore Racing Sailing stories from crew over boards during racing, on the way in or to the race course, delivery trips before or after a race along with Lake Michigan boats that attend races away from Lake Michigan. As these stories developed, it became clear that when a boat sank, the entire crew was then "over board". This simple fact, originally not considered, added greatly to the database. Many stories contain just the cold hard facts. The emotions and anxieties were removed to keep the possibility of a libel suit to a minimum, since these are stories typically told of others on board. The range of emotions in the stories include shrieking of women who believe they are seeing someone drown, foul language amongst crew accusing others of not pulling their weight, accusations that certain people are short of brain power or just plain stupid. Some involve crew mad at skipper, skipper mad at crew and crew mad at crew. Much of this type of anger seems to come out just at the stressful time of recovery and diffused quickly thereafter. Put yourself on board in each story and imagine how you would react in the situation. LM Case 1 As reported by Alan R.
