The faunistic study of the family Phoridae carried out in northwestern of Iran during 2013–2017. Five species (Conicera tibialis Schmitz, Received: 1925, Dohrniphora cornuta (Bigot, 1857), Gymnophora arcuata (Meigen, 1830), 06 August, 2018 Metopina oligoneura (Mik, 1867) and Triphleba intermedia (Malloch, 1908)) are newly recorded from Iran. The genera Conicera Meigen, 1830, Dohrniphora Accepted: 14 November, 2018 Dahl, 1898, Gymnophora Macquart, 1835 and Triphleba Rondani, 1856 are reported for the first time from the country. INSECTS OF MICRONESIA Diptera: Phoridae By ERWIN M. BEYER BONN, STIFTSGASSE 8, WEST GERMANY INTRODUCTION G. E. Bohart was the first to report on phorids of Micronesia. In his study on the Phoridae of Guam [1947, U. S. Nat. Mus., Proc. 96 (3205): 397-416, figs. 33-48] he dealt with five genera and 11 species; one genus (Para fannia Bohart) and nine species were described as new. C. N. Colyer [1957, Hawaiian Ent. Soc., Proc. 16 (2) : 232] synonymized Parafannia Bohart with Gymnoptera Lioy. In our recent study on the Phoridae of Hawaii (Insects of Hawaii 11, 1964) D. E. Hardy and I recognize M egaselia stuntzi Bohart as a synonym of M. setaria (Malloch). In this present study, Pulici phora nigriventris Bohart is shown to be a synonym of P. pulex Dahl. Bohart's descriptions of his new species are inadequate and not always based upon the most reliable characters; the illustrations are sometimes inac curate. I am unable, therefore, to include Chonocephalus species in this study. In the Micronesian material before me, three members of this genus are rep resented; none of these can, however, be identified as any of Bohart's species. M egaselia setifemur Bohart, which also needs redescription, is not repre sented in this material. At present, seven genera, two subgenera, and 24 named species of Phori dae, including the two species of ChonocephalusJ are known to occur in Micro nesia. Ten species are new to science, one tribe (Beckerinini) and five species are recorded for the first time in Micronesia. When considering the Micronesian phorid genera, it is evident that only genera of worldwide distribution are represented. -

Email: [email protected] 3 Email: [email protected] Abstract Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA gene sequences supports the monophyly of the Phoridae. Within this family the Phorinae clade includes two aberrant termitophilous subfam- ilies, the Thaumatoxeninae and the Termitoxeniinae, which cluster with Dohrniphora and Diplonevra. These two genera include termitophiles and parasitoids of termites, so we hypothesize that these termitophilous phorids are a monophyletic group. While the data neither refute nor sup- port the assumed monophyly of the Metopininae, the genera of this subfamily were not monophyl- etic in our analysis, but fell into two subclades that correspond with the tribes Metopinini and Gymnophorini. Biodiversity Data Journal 3: e4299. doi: 10.3897/BDJ.3.e4299 Abstract The genus Dohrniphora is a hyperdiverse group of phorid flies, a family whose species are commonly characterized as generalized scavengers. The lifestyle of most species of Dohrniphora is unknown, although one cosmopolitan, synanthropic species, D. cornuta (Bigot) fits the general scavenger mold. Here we show that flies of the D. longirostrata species group exhibit highly specific “headhunting” behavior in which injured Odontomachus ants are decapitated, the heads dragged away, and females either feed on their contents or lay an egg nearby. Since most females studied lacked eggs in their ovaries, we conclude that this bizarrely specialized feeding is necessary to provide nutrients for reproduction in these flies. Our study provides further evidence that injured ants are a common, stable resource in tropical ecosystems that support a wide array of phorid flies. Such narrowly constrained lifestyles, as exemplified by exclusively feeding on and breeding in the head contents of certain ponerine worker ants, could allow the co- existence of a huge community of saprophagous flies. -

Duquette Department of Biology, California State University, Bakersfield Abstract With over 1,300 known species, the genus Megaselia Rondani is the largest phorid genus, largely the result of high cryptic diversity and a past tendency for researchers to lump species into the genus that defied convenient classification. For many of these species, little information is available beyond one or two morphological characters. The first molecular study of such a species, Megaselia sulphurizona Borgmeier, is presented here. New sequence data from two mitochondrial loci (cytochrome oxidase, COI; NADH 1 dehydrogenase, ND1) for a total of 792 bp were obtained from 22 M. sulphurizona specimens collected from four populations in California, plus 12 other phorid taxa using standard DNA extraction and PCR techniques. Neighbor-joining, maximum likelihood, and maximum parsimony analyses revealed M. sulphurizona to be a cryptic species complex, constituting three distinct species in the Riverside, Monrovia, and Bakersfield/Tehachapi areas. Six species are recognized, five of which are new to science: D. ereba, D. goliatha, D. hypermeka, D. truncatiseta, and D. gnoma. The sole described species, D. setigera (Malloch), is found to be a senior synonym of the North American D. gaudialis (Cockerell) and the Brazilian D. impressa (Borgmeier), both new synonyms. Although the greatest species richness so far recognized is in the Palearctic Region, much of the Neotropical fauna is still to be assessed. These flies are prominent in the phorid catches from middle elevation sites throughout Central and South America, but so far only 15 Neotropical species have been recognized, and none have been described since the latest review of the fauna (Borgmeier, 1969). Forty-one new records of Phoridae are recorded for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and the species Eibsfeldtphora cumsaltensis Disney 2009, Megaselia (M.) gracilipalpis Borgmeier 1969, Megaselia (Aphiochaeta) latimanus (Malloch, 1914), Melaloncha curvata Brown, 2005, and Trophodeinus vicinus (Borgmeier, 1963) are recorded for the first time in Brazil. Species are distributed in 18 genera and 3 subfamilies. The total known diversity of phorids in the state is augmented from 10 to 51 species.
