February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. This study is the third annual study of diversity of characters in prime time television programming. The study examined the first two episodes of each prime time entertainment series airing on the six broadcast networks. The findings indicate that despite ongoing emphasis, encouragement, and pressure on the part of media advocates, civil rights groups, government officials, and even some entertainment industry leaders, the networks have yet to produce a prime time

    • 35 YE 21 AR 0 S 2 BERKSHIRE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the Berkshire Jewish Film Festival. The brainchild of Dr. Zev Raviv, the festival was led by Margie Metzger for 30 years. For the first 20 years, the films were shown on a 16mm projector at Knesset Israel in either the Sanctuary or the Social Hall. At the very beginning, a crowd of 25 was considered a success. Amy Abramovich helped run the concession where people could buy ice cream and other goodies. Because it was (and still is) a fundraiser for the Knesset Israel Hebrew School, it was important to involve the students, and each year a contest was held to design the program cover. The tide turned with the screening of the documenta- ry, The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg. There was stand- ing room only and it was then that public perception of the film festival changed. And the rest is history! Over these past 35 years, the BJFF has shown hundreds of films to thousands of people. Last year with the pan- demic forcing us to close the theater doors, we were able to continue as a virtual festival showing films online and engaging our audience members with Zoom talkbacks. This year we are celebrating with a full seven weeks of programming. Including the five short films being shown on August 9th, we are offering eighteen films in total. Our films range from political documentaries and biographies to comedies, heartfelt family stories, and animation. We couldn’t run this festival without our loyal volunteers.

  • CPYU Trend Alert
CPYU Trend Alert: TV for Tweens by Chris Wagner Television programs produced specifically for the tween demographic are taking off. Cable television is beginning to find a niche among tween viewers by focusing on live-action shows. Evidence of this can be seen in the recent success of Disney’s High School Musical franchise and Hannah Montana , as well as Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh and The Naked Brothers Band . Tweens, of course, have always watched television. However back in the late 1990’s, a gradual shift began occurring among broadcast networks that largely neglected this age group. Dan Schneider, creator of past and present Nickelodeon hits such as Zoey 101 and The Amanda Show says that networks used to air family shows during primetime hours. As of recent years, these time slots have become edgier and racier and as a result, young children and tweens (with diligent parents) were left to view shows elsewhere. Because cable channels had been marketing shows to tweens for many years already, they were primed and ready to step in and fill the programming void. Tweens are in a stage of their lives where they’re no longer beginning to think of themselves as kids. They have not reached full-fledged adolescence, yet are beginning to test their independence and find their individuality. Gary Marsh, the Disney Channel’s president for entertainment says, “[Tweens] are trapped between the cocoon and comfort of being a child, and the rebellion and independence they want as a teenager. So your goal is trying to satisfy all those needs that kids have.” Though differing opinions exist, cable companies generally categorize the tween demographic as being between 9 and 14 years old.

Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. The variety of options offered by digital platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube introduces new competitors to physical entertainment venues, such as comedy clubs. IBIS World Report suggests that the comedy club industry generates $315.1 million annually in the United States. However, while the industry itself is growing, digital entertainment venues (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and YouTube) threaten the future of physical stand-up clubs (Edwards, 2015). This potential substitute has left stand-up comedy clubs, like the Texas Improv Comedy Clubs, questioning if they can maintain their brand identity, while potentially leveraging new media to their advantage. Overview In 1963, the Improvisation Comedy Club, or Improv, started in New York City by Budd Friedman as a venue for Broadway performers to relax after their shows.
