Casting on February 8, 2011, TVLine reported that Rachel Bilson is nearing a deal to star in the series. Her role was later confirmed by The CW in a press release. Shortly thereafter, Wilson Bethel joined the cast as Wade Kinsella, zoe's neighbor for The Magnificent Bad Boy. Hart's reception of the first season of Dixie received mixed reviews, scoring 43 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic. TVGuide.com described the show as Southern Exposure and said in a later review that the actors are better than cutesy material, although Bilson is not as convincing as a heart surgeon. Both TVGuide.com and Robert Bianco of USA Today said the show is potentially offensive to the South. Bianco also wrote that the show was shallow and with Bilson giving an unconvincing performance, such as acting surprised by calling himself a doctor. Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter said the series is predictable and superficial but surprisingly touching. Writing for The New York Times, critic Neil Genzlinger wrote: The premiere, at least, has not found a convincing way to balance the conflicting threads: the disorientation of the mouse city, medical emergencies, the maidens, the problems with the pope, the young beautiful and accessible things. Los Angeles Times reviewer Mary McNamara described the show as a stack of familiar scripts stitched together to form a pretty, if not very substantial blanket. TVLine described the show as Everwood-esque. TVLine later stated, Beautifully shot with warm, cozy tones, the southern setting completely envelops the glowing Bilson, adding that Porter's appearance defeats us and makes us forget that clumsy intro and, despite the cliche of rom-com, the pilot is super-ectiven, introducing us to someone who will be a key player in the story of zoe, laying the groundwork for the narrative.
