ANNUAL REPORT 2015 16_A70_TV_Acad_Ad.qxp_Layout 1 7/8/16 11:43 AM Page 1 PROUD MEMBER OF »CBS THE TELEVISION ACADEMY 2 ©2016 CBS Broadcasting Inc. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AS THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF CONTENT HAVE INCREASED in what is widely regarded as television’s second Golden Age, so have employment opportunities for the talented men and women who create that programming. And as our industry, and the content we produce, have become more relevant, so has the relevance of the Television Academy increased as an essential resource for television professionals. In 2015, this was reflected in the steady rise in our membership — surpassing 20,000 for the first time in our history — as well as the expanding slate of Academy-sponsored activities and the heightened attention paid to such high-profile events as the Television Academy Honors and, of course, the Creative Arts Awards and the Emmy Awards. Navigating an industry in the midst of such profound change is both exciting and, at times, a bit daunting. Reimagined models of production and distribution — along with technological innovations and the emergence of new over-the-top platforms — have led to a seemingly endless surge of creativity, and an array of viewing options. As the leading membership organization for television professionals and home to the industry’s most prestigious award, the Academy is committed to remaining at the vanguard of all aspects of television. Toward that end, we are always evaluating our own practices in order to stay ahead of industry changes, and we are proud to guide the conversation for television’s future generations. -

As an interactive bonus, the photos with red borders have embedded links, so click on the winner photos to sample the program. — Amy Maclean, Editorial Director Best Overall Content by Genre Comedy African American Winner: The Conners — ABC Entertainment Winner: Walk Against Fear: James Meredith — Smithsonian Channel This timely documentary is named after James Meredith’s 1966 Walk Against Fear, in which he set out to show a Black man could walk peace- fully in Mississippi. He was shot on the second day. What really sets this The Conners shines at finding ways to make you laugh through life’s film apart is archival footage coupled with a rare one-on-one interview with struggles, whether it’s financial pressures, parenthood, or, most recently, the Meredith, the first Black man to enroll at the University of Mississippi. pandemic. You could forgive a sitcom for skipping COVID-19 in its storyline, but by tackling it, The Conners shows us once again that life is messy and Nominees sometimes hard, but with love and humor, we persevere. -
Rachel Bilson and Scott Porter Dish on Love Triangle on ‘Heart of Dixie’
Rachel Bilson and Scott Porter Dish on Love Triangle on ‘Heart of Dixie’ By Jennifer Ross In the season finale of Hart of Dixie, Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) and Wade Kinsella (Wilson Bethel) finally have their love affair. However, the show didn’t end like that. Soon after, George Tucker (Scott Porter) decides to call off his wedding to Lemon Breeland (Jaime King) and confesses his love to Dr. Hart. What’s a girl to do? Bilson, 30, tells UsMagazine.com that although she does not know who her character will end up with, she thinks the love triangle will continue for awhile. As if that was not enough to keep you waiting for next season, poor Lemon will battle with maintaining her perfect image before society. How will she handle the humiliation? Will she fight to get her man back? Will she go back to her former lover, Lavon Hayes (Cress Williams)? What do you do if you’re caught in a love triangle? Cupid’s Advice: Whether you are torn between two lovers or happen to be one of the two hanging on, being in a love triangle is exactly like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. There really is nowhere to turn and no matter if you believe they love you, you are ultimately alone. When you are ready to move forward to a better relationship, here are a few tips to get you going: 1. Be honest: One of the main reasons you got yourself into this mess is because you were not honest with yourself in the beginning. -

Wilburn 1 Ryan Wilburn Capstone Bednar 1 April 2021 First Full Draft
Wilburn 1 Ryan Wilburn Capstone Bednar 1 April 2021 First Full Draft For the December 2020 issue, Harry Styles, ex-boyband heartthrob, appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine in a blue, lacey, floor length Gucci dress. The cover received attention from far and wide, especially on social media. Vogue and Styles tweeted the cover image and a link to the cover article on November 13th, 2020 (Figure 1), sparking conversation among Twitter users, both fans of Styles and those who found issues with the cover. I analyzed a set of responses on Twitter to Harry Styles’ Vogue magazine cover photo and the ensuing controversy over gender performance and masculinity. I followed Gillian Rose’s method of discourse analysis, Discourse I, and worked through the lenses of hegemony, hegemonic masculinity, and gender performativity to answer the following research questions: 1. How does hegemonic masculinity shape the way Twitter users respond to non-normative presentations of masculinity, like Harry Styles wearing a dress for Vogue? 2. What does hegemony look like on Twitter and how might that differ from society as a whole? What is dominant in this particular space? In my experience as a Twitter user, the platform is used in an incredibly unique way. As a social media site, it affords a possibility of wide reach for posts, allowing people to connect with posts from users they have no previous connection with, even no mutual friends with. The short, quick post style allows users to post their responses to an original post with lighting speed and share that thought with their followers. -
