Pada awal Mac 2014, saya dijemput oleh sekumpulan NGO Melayu / Islam yang diketuai oleh Dato' Ibrahim Ali, yang menentang pemansuhan Akta Hasutan 1948 dan kelulusan apa yang dikenali sebagai Bil Harmoni, untuk mengetuai sebuah jawatankuasa bagi menyediakan memorandum untuk dikemukakan kepada Dato’ Seri Najib, Perdana Menteri BN pada masa itu. Saya berbahas sendirian sama ada hendak menerimanya atau tidak, kerana apabila saya dilihat duduk disamping Dato' Ibrahim Ali, Presiden Perkasa itu pun sudah cukup untuk menarik kritikan daripada kumpulan bukan Melayu yang memperjuangkan pemansuhan Akta Hasutan dan menjadikan bil Harmony sebagai undang-undang. Saya memutuskan untuk menerimany atas syarat saya, yang saya nyatakan di mesyuarat pertama pada 14 Mac 2014, iaitu: 1. Tugas saya hanya untuk membantu jawatankuasa itu mengenai aspek undang-undang dan perlembagaan dalam merangka memorandum. Empat hari lalu, sekumpulan orang ramai mengadakan perhimpunan di hadapan kediaman rasmi Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman ekoran keresahan berhubung peningkatan insiden jenayah di Johor Bahru. Ekoran itu, mesyuarat kabinet semalam meluluskan penghantaran tambahan 200 kereta peronda polis ke Johor Bahru bagi memantapkan lagi tugas rondaan pencegahan jenayah di Johor Bahru, demikian menurut laporan Bernama. Di samping itu, Najib yang mempengerusi mesyuarat kabinet semalam berkata, jemaah menteri juga bersetuju dengan langkah polis menambah 400 lagi anggota bagi daerah Johor Bahru menjelang Ogos nanti. "Usaha penambahan anggota ini hendaklah dibuat dengan seberapa segera yang boleh," katanya kepada pemberita di Kuala Lumpur semalam. Menurutnya, mesyuarat kabinet telah meluluskan tiga tindakan segera bagi menangani masalah jenayah di Johor Bahru termasuk meluluskan peruntukan RM6 juta bagi pihak polis menyewa rumah kedai untuk dijadikan ibu pejabat polis daerah yang baru secepat mungkin. Timbalan Perdana Menteri berkata, kabinet bersetuju penubuhan tiga daerah polis yang baru itu dilaksanakan dengan segera tanpa perlu menunggu pembinaan bangunan tetap. Tiga IPD baru yang akan ditubuhkan itu ialah bagi kawasan Johor Bahru Timur, Nusa Jaya dan Kulai. They were all on law-related topics. During the first few years of my retirement, due to my involvement in those areas, I started writing and speaking on the legal aspects of Islamic banking and finance. Besides, I used to get invitations to speak on such subjects as integrity, corruption and others. They were all uploaded on my websites. The number of visitors kept increasing, beyond my expectation. I used to receive congratulatory emails from readers, but never a criticism. In early March 2014, I was invited by a group of Malay/Muslim NGOs led by Dato’ Ibrahim Ali, who were resisting the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948 and the passing of what became known as the Harmony Bills, to chair the committee to prepare a memorandum to be submitted to Dato Seri Najib, the then BN Prime Minister.     Umno meeting focused on ‘red shirt’ rally, Bersih 4, says source The Malaysian Insider Sept 8, 2015 By Md Izwan Umno's political bureau meeting yesterday steered clear of hot-button issues, a source said, despite being the first meeting after deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal were sacked from the Cabinet. The meeting, chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak, focused on the Bersih 4 rally and the looming September 16 "red shirt" rally by Malay rights groups. He said the meeting went well even though he expected the situation to heat up due to the presence of Shafie and Muhyiddin, both of whom have been critical of the prime minister of late. "The meeting went on smoothly. However, Muhyiddin and Shafie did not actively participate in the discussions," the source told The Malaysian Insider on condition of anonymity. "The situation was calm; those present raised current national issues." Najib did not touch upon rumours that Muhyiddin and Shafie will be sacked from the party, said the source. "What concerned members was the red shirt rally. Some members of the political bureau did not agree with it." He said their contention was over the rally location and the fact that it had not received the police's permission. "They questioned why the rally must be held near Low Yat," the source added. Low Yat Plaza, located in Kuala Lumpur's shopping district of Bukit Bintang, was the scene of fistfights on the night of July 12. The brawl took on a racial tinge after around 200 people from Malay groups gathered in front of the mall to protest a storekeeper's arrest of a Malay youth who allegedly stole a smartphone.

FoAA online refers to the exercise of civil rights in peaceful assembly and association enhanced by the use of ICT (Venkiteswaran, 2016). There are three objectives of this report: First, it seeks to deepen understanding about the context in which FoAA online in Malaysia exists. For this, some background is provided on the historical context of FoAA in Malaysia and its transition towards the digital realm, as well as the legal restrictions on FoAA online. Secondly, it aims to capture the creativity and richness of campaign strategies enhanced by the use of ICT in civil society movements in Malaysia. Lastly, it relates the exercise of FoAA online to the broader struggles of human rights in the country, through deriving observations from the campaign case studies as well as challenges and threats faced by the cyber activists in Malaysia.
