Señor Hornsby said aerwards ‘I was just pleased to complete the distance, which I had never run before. I was already suffering badly at the half way mark and had developed painful blisters on the soles of both feet. However, I just told myself to keep pung one foot in front of the other and tried to block out the pain. The marathon is a real test of your physical and mental resilience, a bit like the new GCSE exams! I would strongly urge pupils at Haughton Academy to enter the London Marathon in the future as it is a very rewarding experience.’ Señor Hornsby has again qualified for the race in London in 2019 and has his sights set on a top 50 finish.

The Big Stch

On admiring the Art displays around school, I thought it would be nice to have something in the Science corridor and came up with the idea of a stched Periodic Table. To do this myself would take months so aer Easter I asked for volunteers. To my great appreciaon, people from the whole Haughton community came forward to help with the project and I am pleased to say it will be finished this term.

Stascs There are 110 squares each consisng of 400 stches! Each square took on average an hour and a half to stch then the element details were stched on. Including the tles there are approximately 54 641 stches!

I’d also like to say a big thank you to the following people for their me and effort, I’m sure you’ll agree it was all worth it when you see the final product.

We are delighted to include in this edion of the Haughton Newsleer the final secon of our two part series where we introduce our Governors.

Jenny Gregg - Support Staff Governor Link Governor for SEN

I have worked at the Educaon Village since June 2007 and I have a good understanding of how all three schools on the Salter’s Lane site operate and work together, through my role as Cover Co-ordinator.

I regularly cover across all departments in Haughton Academy, so this gives me an insight into the day-to- day running of departments. I also work with challenging and vulnerable pupils who may not be able to succeed in mainstream educaon and need to be educated through an alternave provision. This has enabled me to establish very strong links with other seconday schools across Darlington. I am also a member of the safeguarding team.

I have three grown up children and two granddaughters that I love to spend my spare me with.

Michael Longstaff - Board appointed Governor Link Governor for Curriculum

I started teaching Design and Technology in 1994 at a secondary school in South Bank in Middlesbrough. The area was tough but the pupils were fantasc and I enjoyed every minute; it was a great place to start my teaching career. I moved to St Bede’s in Lanchester where I became Head of Department and then Curriculum Director on the LEAD team. I also looked aer GTP and SCITT trainees as well as NQTs. Whilst I enjoyed my leadership responsibilites, one of the best parts of the job was being in the classroom with the pupils and I connued to be heavily involved with GCSE and A Level teaching.

In 2012, I was appointed as Course Director at Durham SCITT in Newton Aycliffe. Training teachers is hugely rewarding and has enabled me to see lessons and pupils in a wide variety of schools and contexts. Durham SCITT has worked closely with The Educaon Village for many years and it felt right, when asked, that I should support the school by becoming a Governor. I hope I can contribute, even in a small way, to the success of the pupils and the school. Andy Sco - Chair of Governors Link Governor for Leadership and Management/Safeguarding

I have been a Governor since 2003, joining the Governing Body of Springfield School when my daughter started at the school. Being a Governor is oen challenging but very rewarding. It gives a great sense of achievement to see strategies and ideas put into acon, that produce improved results and a beer school experience for our children. I’m also a local Councillor in the area and I want to see us have the best local school that we can for all of our kids.

Shortly aer I started as a Governor, the Educaon Village concept was developed, amalgamang three schools into one new building. This was a challenging me and the Educaon Village now is very different from how it was in the beginning. I progressed from a Primary School Governor to serving on the Governing body covering all three schools. I’ve learned a huge amount in that me and it has been worth the effort to see the schools go from strength to strength.

More recently the Governing body structures have changed when the Educaon Village became an Academy. We now have seperate Governing Bodies for each school. We call them Educaon Standards Commiees (ECS). The main focus of the ESC is the issues and challenges that each school presents in regards to Educaonal Standards. We are making excellent progress and it has been a privilege for me to have led the Haughton Academy ESC as the Chairperson for the last five years.

Sadly I have now decided to stand down from the Governing Body due to a change in my work and family commitments. I will forever be grateful to the school for giving me the experience and the chance to make a difference. I know Haughton School will connue to improve. We have an excellent management team and some of the most dedicated teachers that you could ever meet. I highly recommend being a Governor. It is a rewarding role and Haughton Governors are a supporve and inclusive group.

Davina Jones - Board Appointed Governor Link Governor for Teaching and Learning

I worked in Educaon for nearly 37 years, firstly as a teacher and leader for Mathemacs and laerly as part of the advisory team for the local authority. Having thoroughly enjoyed my career in teaching, on rerement I felt that I sll wanted to be involved in some way. I am delighted to be part of the governing body of Haughton Academy as I started my teaching career at Haughton School in 1976 - it feels like I have come ‘full circle’. I believe passionately in state educaon and that all children should be able to aend their local school, secure in the knowledge that they will reach their full academic potenal. I will strive to support the school to ‘set the bar high’ for all its pupils.

My rerement has allowed me to spend more me outdoors, fell walking and cycling, and I am a regular volunteer at out local hospice. I am also a ‘very proud mum’ to 2 daughters in their 20s, who were very happy, successful and fulfilled aending the local comprehensive school.

If you are interested in Governance and would like to know more about the opportunies across any of the five schools in the Trust then please email EVAT’s Governance Support and Development Officer, Alana Mackenzie at amackenzie@educaonvillage.org.uk Geography: An Update
