London Marathon On Sunday 24 April 2018, Señor Hornsby took part in the Elite Championship Race at the 2018 London Marathon, alongside the likes of Mo Farah. On the hogest London Marathon day on record, with temperatures at 23C, Señor Hornsby finished the 26.2 mile course in 273rd place in 2 hours 44 minutes. Señor Hornsby said aerwards ‘I was just pleased to complete the distance, which I had never run before. I was already suffering badly at the half way mark and had developed painful blisters on the soles of both feet. However, I just told myself to keep pung one foot in front of the other and tried to block out the pain. The marathon is a real test of your physical and mental resilience, a bit like the new GCSE exams! I would strongly urge pupils at Haughton Academy to enter the London Marathon in the future as it is a very rewarding experience.’ Señor Hornsby has again qualified for the race in London in 2019 and has his sights set on a top 50 finish. Purple Summer On Friday 15 June 2018 staff and pupils from across Haughton Academy took part in Darlington Borough Council’s ‘Purple Summer Day’, with the aim to raise awareness of Child Sexual Exploitaon (CSE) and child abuse. All pupils were shown a CSE presentaon in tutor groups of what CSE means, what signs to look out for and how to keep themselves safe. There are key staff members in school for pupils to report any concerns; Mrs Gill, Mrs Gregg and Laura Wilson (Counsellor). All pupils were encouraged to bring an extra purple item to school and staff were asked to wear purple. All pupils contributed towards our ‘Stop CSE’ campaign where pupils were encouraged to write down the signs of CSE and what to do if they suspect themselves or others to be a vicAm of CSE. We have proudly displayed these in the Village Street. Thank you to each pupil and member of staff who got involved. North East Book Awards Year 7 pupils from Haughton Academy have been busy reading and judging the shortlisted books for this year’s north East Book Award, which is now in its 13th year. More than 25 schools from across the whole of the north East region regularly sign up to read, discuss, debate and ulAmately vote for their winner. Each year the shortlist is carefully chosen by a team of school librarians and past student judges to offer something for everyone and to help pupils to break out of their reading comfort zone and try somethimg new. The highlight of each year’s award process is the announcement event at the Centre for Life in newcastle when all the young people gather together to meet the shortlisted authors and to hear first-hand about their ideas, inspiraon and wriAng experience. The Big Stch On admiring the Art displays around school, I thought it would be nice to have something in the Science corridor and came up with the idea of a sAtched Periodic Table. To do this myself would take months so aer Easter I asked for volunteers. To my great appreciaon, people from the whole Haughton community came forward to help with the project and I am pleased to say it will be finished this term.
