Research conducted under INPUT is generously sup¬ported by the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) through a grant to the Climate Policy Initiative. www.inputbrasil.org 3 The Causes and Consequences of Agricultural Expansion in Matopiba∗ Arthur Bragançay CPI July 2016 Abstract This paper examines the causes and consequences of the agricultural expansion in Matopiba (Brazil) over the past two decades. It documents that agricultural expansion in this region is concentrated in municipalities in the Cerrado biome. The estimates indicate that since the late 1990s agricultural output is increasing faster in municipal- ities in this biome when compared to municipalities outside the biome. Agricultural expansion led to increases in GDP per capita. The increase in GDP per capita is a re- sult of direct effects on the agricultural sector as well as indirect effects on services sector. The estimates also suggest that municipalities in the biome experienced larger gains in the access to durable consumer goods such as TV and refrigerator and in ba- sic infrastructure such as access to electric power. However, the results do not indicate differential changes in migration and human capital investments between Cerrado and non-Cerrado municipalities. -

Agriculture intensification population growth and cropland expansion: evidence from post- Green Revolution Andhra Pradesh Amarendra Pratap Singh1 and K Narayanan2 Abstract Increasing food demand due to rising population and urban growth may distort earth’s natural landscape unless technology driven intensification helps to spare land for alternative activities. Technological intervention in agriculture has not only increased agricultural yield which reflects land saving aspect of technology but it has also reduced fallow period substantially to increase effective supply of land which mirrors land augmenting aspect of technology. Here, we examine the impact of these two aspects of technology on cropland expansion for Andhra Pradesh using district level data over the period 1970-2009. Along with it, we also investigate the impact of growth in population, urban population and literate population on cropland expansion. We use a regression model based on the IPAT framework to measure the relative impact of affluence, population and technology on resource use. Results reject land sparing hypothesis in the state since the inception of new technology. However, population pressure on cropland seem to have declined. Other important result highlights the negative impact of urban growth on cropland expansion which implies that loss of prime cropland due to urban expansion cannot be refuted. Introduction Population driven cropland expansion has been a major driver of land use change both at global as well as regional level (Ramankutty et al. 2002). BRIEFING Desertification and agriculture SUMMARY Desertification is a land degradation process that occurs in drylands. It affects the land's capacity to supply ecosystem services, such as producing food or hosting biodiversity, to mention the most well-known ones. Its drivers are related to both human activity and the climate, and depend on the specific context. More than 1 billion people in some 100 countries face some level of risk related to the effects of desertification. Climate change can further increase the risk of desertification for those regions of the world that may change into drylands for climatic reasons. Desertification is reversible, but that requires proper indicators to send out alerts about the potential risk of desertification while there is still time and scope for remedial action. However, issues related to the availability and comparability of data across various regions of the world pose big challenges when it comes to measuring and monitoring desertification processes. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the UN sustainable development goals provide a global framework for assessing desertification. The 2018 World Atlas of Desertification introduced the concept of 'convergence of evidence' to identify areas where multiple pressures cause land change processes relevant to land degradation, of which desertification is a striking example. Desertification involves many environmental and socio-economic aspects. It has many causes and triggers many consequences. A major cause is unsustainable agriculture, a major consequence is the threat to food production. To fully comprehend this two-way relationship requires to understand how agriculture affects land quality, what risks land degradation poses for agricultural production and to what extent a change in agricultural practices can reverse the trend. -

69972 Options for Preparing a Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Program in Mali Consistent with TerrAfrica for World Bank Engagement at the Country Level Introduction Public Disclosure Authorized 1. Background and rationale: 1. One of the most environmentally vulnerable areas of the world is the drylands of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the Sahel, the Horn of Africa and Southeast Africa. Mali, as with other dryland areas in this category, suffers from droughts approximately every 30 years. These droughts triple the number of people exposed to severe water scarcity at least once in every generation, leading to major food and health crisis. In general, dryland populations lag far behind the rest of the world in human well-being and development indicators. Similarly, the average infant mortality rate for dryland developing countries exceeds that for non-dryland countries by 23% or more. The human causes of degradation1 and desertification2 include direct factors such as land use (agricultural expansion in marginal areas, deforestation, overgrazing) and indirect factors (policy failures, population pressure, land tenure). The biophysical impacts of dessertification are regional and global climate change, impairment of carbon sequestation capacity, dust storms, siltation into rivers, downstream flooding, erosion gullies and dune formation. The social impacts are devestating- increasing poverty, decreased agricultural and silvicultural production and sometimes Public Disclosure Authorized malnutrition and/or death. 2. There are clear links between land degradation and poverty. Poverty is both a cause and an effect of land degradation. Poverty drives populations to exploit their environment unsustainably because of limited resources, poorly defined property rights and limited access to credit, which prevents them from investing resources into environmental management. -

Industrialization of agriculture correlates with an explosive enlargement of human population, during XX and at the beginning of XXI centuries. An ongoing process of environmental erosion has been speeding up during that period, not only in our physical surrounding, but also in biodiversity. A new direction in agricultural food production is in demand. Organic food production has been recognized as the way of providing safety and quality food, preserving the environment in the same time. In the other hand new land areas have to be explored for agricultural use, in order to enhance food quantity to meeting the increasing demand for food. These targets set new requirements in plant breeding. To fulfill these requirements the genetic variability harbored in genetic resources has to be preserved, examined and put to good use. Despite the homogeneity of maize landscapes, alternative models of maize production exist. This comparative study is based on farmers collectives from Aquitaine (France) and Veneto (Italy) that manage maize landraces. Since the early 2000s, the Aquitaine group adopted maize landraces from different regions of the world while Veneto groups recovered the "historical" and local maize landraces. In Italy, maize landraces are mainly used for human consumption while in France animal feed represents their principal usage. Each group has developed different strategies to define, distinguish and legitimatize their work on maize landraces within a broader context dominated by commercial hybrids. The Aquitaine and Veneto groups display very different organizational functions, practices, and visions. This diversity reflects different productive systems and priorities. The Aquitaine group focuses on the development of maize diversity and related knowledges.
