Callus induction from leaf base explants occurred in the dark on three media with MS mineral solution containing 4.52 μM dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4.83 μM naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 0.46 μM kinetin (Kin), 5% sucrose and 200 mg L-1 casein hydrolysate. The media differed only in vitamin and/or proline content. Calli from ovary culture were achieved on MS medium contain- ing 45.25 μM 2,4-D. The mean percentage of callus induction from leaf base explants was 18.9%, with no sig- nificant differences between media, and 27.3% from ovary sections. All embryogenic calli were formed on MS media containing 0.45 μM 2,4-D, 4.44 μM benzyladenine (BA) and 0.49 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) under low light intensity (25 μE m-2s-1). -

Iris for the Home Gardener A Rainbow of Colors in Many Shapes and Sizes Bob Lyons FEW PLANTS HAVE AS MUCH HISTORY and affection among gardeners than iris. In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the Gods, and indeed, Iris appear in many magical colors—a large and diverse genus. Some have large showy flowers, others more I. ‘Black Gamecock’ understated; some grow in clumps, others spread; some prefer I. ensata ‘Angelic Choir’ it dry, others are more partial to moist, even wet conditions; and some grow from bulbs, while others return each year from rhizomes just beneath the soil surface. How does one tell them apart and make the right choice for a home garden? Fortunately, horticulturists and iris enthusiasts have developed a system of organization to make sense out of the vast world of irises. Three groups that account for more than 75% of the commercial iris market today are the Bearded Iris, Siberian Iris, and Japanese Iris. Each group recognizes the best of the best with prestigious national awards, noted in the descriptions that follow. The Dykes Medal is awarded to the finest iris of any class. Former manor of famous nobleman Juozapas Godlevskis in Aukštoji Freda near Kaunas was chosen as a place for the Garden. Creation of the manor started at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding park was landscaped to adjust the ponds to the form of J and G letters. With only slight changes they have still remained. Presently, Kaunas Botanical Garden of VMU occupies the area of 62.5 hectares. Approximately 10864 different plants comprise the collections and expositions. HORTUS BOTANICUS KAUNENSIS UNIVERSITATI VYTAUTI MAGNI SECTORS OF PLANT COLLECTIONS AND DISPLAYS Sector of Medicinal, Aromatic Plants and Spices At the present time there are 786 cultivated examples of medicinal plants, aromatic plants and spices and 49 examples of Humulus lupulus. Collections are planted according to bioactive plant compounds classification. 26 species belong to the category of protected and rare plants. Sector of Dendrology There are 1367 cultivated examples in this sector. In 2011 extraordinary B. Galdikas oak grove was planted. It is comprised of 50 genetic clones of 31 famous Lithuanian oaks – nature monuments. -

A Horticulture Information article from the Wisconsin Master Gardener website, posted 21 May 2007 Iris pallida This species iris, also know as Zebra Iris, Sweet Iris, or Dalmatian Iris, is a very old garden plant. Native to rocky areas of northern Italy and the Eastern Mediterranean (including Dalmatia, a province of Croatia, hence one of the common names), it was one of the primary species used in the development of the tall bearded iris. Its dried root (along with other species of Iris) is a source of orris root powder that was used medicinally or for its supposed magical and alchemical properties in medieval times, as well as a per- fume and potpourri fi xative for many centuries. It may take several years of drying for the root to fully develop its fragrance. Orris oil, derived from the fresh root, is used as a fl avoring Iris pallida ‘Aurea-variegata’ in bud in soft drinks, candies and chewing gum. The low clumps of sword-like leaves remain nearly evergreen in mild winter climates, but in Iris pallida ‘Argentea Variegata’ at cold areas the plant dies back to the ground like RHS Garden Wisley in England. other irises do. The thick foliage of the cultivars commonly offered as garden plants has elegant vertical stripes of blue-green and either silvery-white (‘Alba-vareigata’ or ‘Argentea Variegata’) or creamy yel- low to pale gold (“Aurea-variegata’ or ‘Variegata’), depending on the cultivar. The aforementioned species is included in numerous national Red Books or Lists due to the progressive decrease of stands. The present paper reviews the factors threatening the occurrence and condition of Gladiolus imbricatus populations in natural localities. The largest threat is connected with transformation of meadows and expansion of urban areas. Keywords: Sword lily; Natural localities; Population abundance; Threatened species; Molinion. Introduction Progressive anthropopressure is leading to huge changes in the natural environment, which are recognised at various levels of its organisation: they are both global and also locally recognised by changes in the areas covered by particular types of ecosystems, extinction of species and expansion or invasion of new species for a given area. -

Iris Sibirica and others Iris Albicans Known as Cemetery Iris as is planted on Muslim cemeteries. Two different species use this name; the commoner is just a white form of Iris germanica, widespread in the Mediterranean. This is widely available in the horticultural trade under the name of albicans, but it is not true to name. True Iris albicans which we are offering here occurs only in Arabia and Yemen. It is some 60cm tall, with greyish leaves and one to three, strongly and sweetly scented, 9cm flowers. The petals are pure, bone- white. The bracts are pale green. (The commoner interloper is found across the Mediterranean basin and is not entitled to the name, which continues in use however. The wrongly named albicans, has brown, papery bracts, and off-white flowers). Our stock was first found near Sana’a, Yemen and is thriving here, outside, in a sunny, raised bed. Rhizomes from various Iris species have been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments since ancient times and many constituents isolated from different Iris species demonstrated potent biological activities in recent studies. All research findings besides the increasing demand for natural ingredients in cosmetics and market demand from industries like alcoholic beverages, cuisine and perfumery indicate a promising future for cultivation of irises for rhizomes, various extracts but most importantly for high quality orris butter. Romania is situated in a transitional continental climate with suitable conditions for hardy iris species and thus with good prospects for successful cultivation of Iris germanica, Iris florentina and Iris pallida in conditions of economic efficiency. Key words: Iris, medicinal plant, orris butter, rhizomes Introduction The common word “iris” that gave the name of the genus, originates from Greek designating “rainbow” presumably due to the wide variety of colors that these flowers can have (Cumo, 2013). The genus reunites about 300 species (Wang et al., 2010) with rhizomes or bulbs (Cantor, 2016). Pašnjačka zajednica poznata pod imenom »Festuco-Koe- lerietum splendentis« u obliku kako ju je opisao i definirao Horvatić nije prema važećim propisima sintaksonom- skog kodeksa validno opisana. Novija su taksonomska istra živanja pokazala da ni njezine karakteristične vrste nisu ispravno određene. Tako takson »Festuca duriuscula var. pallens subvar. curvula« odgovara vrsti F. lapidosa Deg., a takson »Festuca pseudovina« vrsti F. illyrica Markgraf- -Dannenb. Zbog toga je izvršena sintaksonomska revizija zajed nice »Festuco-Koelerietum splendentis« i raščlanjena na dvije samostalne asocijacije — as. Koelerio-Festucetum illy- ricae Trinajstić, nom. et. comb. nov. i ts. Bromo-Festucetum lapidosae Trinajstić, ass. nov. Uvod Od vremena kad je Horvatić (1963) iz široko shvaćene asocijacije » Asphodelo-Chrysopogonetum grylli« izdvojio as. Festuco-Koelerietum splendentis, skupilo se je mnogo podataka i znanstvenih informacija, pa je potrebno izvršiti reviziju nekih prvotnih Horvatićevih postavki. Najprije je Braun-Blanquet (1964:136) argumentirano osporio razred Brachypodio-Chrysopogonetea riječima: »Auch die Selbständigkeit ACTA BOT. CROAT. VOL. 51, 1992. 103 I. TRINAJSTIC der von Horvatić (1957) aufgestellten mediterranen Klasse Brachypo- dio-Chrysopogonetea erscheint ungenqgend. Von den 13 Klassenkennarten sind 11 auch in den Thero-Brachypodietea Südfrankreichs reichlich ver treten.« Nešto kasnije Ilijanić (1970: 24) također stavlja pod upitnik razred Brachypodio-Chrysopogonetea, a nakon toga suBarbero i L o - i s e 1 (1971), vjerojatno potaknuti argumentima Braun-Blanqueta, također podvrgli kritičkoj analizi taj vegetacijski razred.
