ST MARK’S CHURCH, KEMPSHOTT 6 SEPTEMBER 2020 St Mark’s at home- Creationtide God is with us wherever we are… Provision, striving and gratitude… The wonderful thing about the apple tree in my garden is that every year, without fail, it produces a lovely crop of tasty apples. I do nothing to contribute to this at all. Unlike so much else in my garden (and my life) it does not need me to do anything, and has become a sign to me of the goodness of God which exists quite apart from any efforts that I make. How amazing it is that this world supplies such a spread of nourishment for us- and while I know that much of it does require effort that I have become removed from (I simply go to the supermarket to buy what others have laboured to produce), these things, and the cycles of nature which allow them to flourish, are freely given. How often we strive to find fulfilment for ourselves… In the Old Testament the prophet Jeremiah explores this very human trait using an image of people straining to dig their own wells for fresh water. They dig and dig, but their effort is ultimately wasted when the wells crack and break. The wells are a picture of people’s search for meaning, for the source of life- often dug and re-dug in vain. Jeremiah believed that a fresh supply of life and hope and meaning was already available in God, and I know this to be true for myself. Later we hear Jesus describe himself as the living water- the ‘water of life’. I think about how often I have tried to make something happen for myself, sometimes at the start I don't realise that this is what I'm doing… and having made something happen, having striven, then I feel that what I have achieved is mine to do what I want with… I grasp hold of it with a firm grip and perhaps even find some sense of myself in its achievement… only when I slowly come to the realisation that I am still thirsty and unfulfilled, do I open my hands to receive true life-giving water from God. I pray, as I look at my apple tree, that I might have a more accurate awareness of the source of the goodness around me, that in my gratitude to God I might be less determined to grasp hold of what I think I have achieved and more generous with the blessings I have received. I pray that I would know the life-giving JEREMIAH 2.13, JOHN 4 & source of the Spirit of God flowing within me and through me to bring life to others. May this be true for you also.
