In one tradition the farmer, his family and friends would eat hot cakes and drink cider before going after dark to the orchard for the ceremony. A tree was chosen, usually the oldest, and the good spirits were greeted by putting a piece of toast or cake soaked in cider among the brances. To scare off evil spirits, the men fired guns into the boughs and banged on kettles and pots while the others in the party would bow and sing the Wassail Song: Here's to thee, old apple tree, Whence thou may'st bud and whence thou may'st blow! And whence thou may'st bear apples enow. Hatsfull! Capsfull! Bushel – bushel – sacksfull! And my pockets full too! Huzza! Another version of the tradition has the best or oldest tree chosen to represent them all, known as the Apple Tree Man. This was feted as a guardian of the orchard.     KFOR CHRONICLE COMKFORCOMKFOR letterletter forfor ChristmasChristmas 20052005 Dear KFOR members, dear friends, In almost any of our home-countries, whatever our faith may be, Christmas time is always a period of serenity, joy, hope and of family reunions. I truly believe that you, KFOR soldiers, are fully successful in helping all Kosovo people to spend these holidays in that serene, peaceful and joyous way they deserve. But I also understand what it means for you to be away from your families during this special time. I know well because, in 40 years of military service, it has happened to me so many times. Therefore, remember that, here in Kosovo, the whole KFOR is now your large family, and we will spend these days sharing the same feelings that families share. Finally, please pass my best wishes to your families and all loved ones. While it is hard for us to be away from home, it is even harder for them to bear our absence, although I am sure they all know how valuable your tour of duty in Kosovo is, as a member of a Peacekeeping force, giving to people the greatest of the gifts: the opportunity for Kosovo families to gather in security, peace and hope.
