View All Critic Reviews May 02, A gambler takes a hapless fellow under his wing, but when he falls for the wrong woman, their lives could be threatened. Paul Thomas Anderson's feature film debut is a slow-moving but compelling drama. Phillip Baker Hall and John C. Reilly, who would later become PTA alums, play characters reminiscent of their careers as a whole -- Hall a tough, restrained fatherly figure and Reilly a dumb, doe-eyed everyman. Usually these characters are confined to the background, but when PTA focuses on them, they are compelling. The plot isn't much to write home about, and the last-act reveal isn't terribly surprising, but the film marches along inoffensively. Overall, PTA's debut wasn't the harbinger of greatness that one might expect, but it's certainly worthy of his oeuvre. Jim H Super Reviewer. Jul 13, A solid first feature from the praised P. Anderson concerning a mysterious figure named Sydney Phillip Baker Hall who shows compassion to two aimless young people John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow by taking them in under his wing, who in turn get him in the middle of a big mess involving an assault of a stranger. Hall has been one of those actors who pops up seemingly everywhere as a supporting piece, but there is no doubt that this is his show, and perhaps his finest hour, as he keeps the audience guessing as to what he is going to do next all while maintaining a composed demeanor. While far from Anderson's best film, that is a simple story that is very well acted and well-written. It is far from a masterpiece as it tends to drag in sections, but Hall's character makes this worth a view alone. Dan S Super Reviewer. Nov 19, Hard Eight is Paul Thomas Anderson's first and most underatted film. Expanded from a a short he shot several years earlier. The story focuses on a down on luck loner John C. Reilly who meets a professional gambler Phillip Baker Hall , they soon become partners and have some neat tricks when making easy money, But is not always a pleasure when you've other to care for. Anderson competently wrote and directored the low key drama with some first rate perfomances from Hall and Reilly and some great supports from Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Its definitley an essential film if your a lover of Paul Thomas Anderson's films. Luke E Super Reviewer. He offers to give him a cigarette and buy a cup of coffee. He offers to drive John to Las Vegas and teach him how to gamble and survive. Although John is skeptical at first, he agrees to Sydney's proposal. Sydney is calm and reserved, and displays a fatherly care for John, who is unsophisticated and not overly intelligent. John has a new friend named Jimmy, who does security work, and he is attracted to Clementine, a cocktail waitress in Reno. Sydney meets Clementine, and learns that she moonlights as a prostitute and is much less sophisticated than John. Although Clementine believes that Sydney might want to sleep with her, Sydney wants to build a connection between her and John. Sydney invites Clementine and John to spend a night together. John reveals that he and Clementine had impulsively gotten married, and she then sold herself to the tourist for sex. The tension is heightened, because John and Clementine have already called the hostage's wife, threatening to murder him if they do not get the money. They do not have a plan after killing the hostage. Sydney manages to calm the situation, advising John and Clementine to leave town and go on honeymoon. After the two leave, Sydney removes the evidence from the motel room. Jimmy then points a gun at Sydney, threatening to kill him. They go to Sydney and John's suite, where Jimmy explains that he is from back east, where he heard stories of how Sydney killed John's father in Atlantic City. John calls from a roadside phone to update Sydney regarding the honeymoon journey. During the call, Sydney tells John that he loves him like a son. Menu - Hard Eight BBQ Release Dates.

Anderson‟s Dilemma: the Limits of Surrogate Paternity JULIAN MURPHET A while ago now, Fredric Jameson located the Utopian dimension of Coppola‟s first Godfather film (1972) in „the fantasy message projected by the title of this film, that is, in the family itself, seen as a figure of collectivity and as the object of a Utopian longing‟.1 In a late-capitalist America beset by an irreversible „deterioration of the family, the growth of permissiveness, and the loss of authority of the father‟, Coppola‟s Sicilians „project an image of social reintegration by way of the patriarchal and authoritarian family of the past‟. (33) To be sure, the ethnic group may preserve within its anachronistic familial webs a relatively untarnished „Name of the Father‟, that can be trotted out for nostalgic wish-fulfilment on celluloid; but it goes without saying that commercial American cinema has always turned on the institution of the family, to the extent that „in a typical Hollywood product, everything, from the fate of the Knights of the Round Table through the October Revolution up to asteroids hitting the earth, is transposed into an Oedipal narrative‟. 2 Jameson‟s Utopian account of the „ineradicable drive towards collectivity‟ (34) betokened by the family drama in American mass culture surely overlooks that most stubborn obstacle to its realization, both within any given plot, and more practically in everyday life: namely, the father himself.

We’re thrilled to have Martin McDonagh’s Irish yarn, The Cripple of Inishmaan, on our stage as the second show of our 2018/19 season. The play is set in a tiny and remote Irish village where everyone is keen to know everyone else’s business, where gossip is a major part of daily life and the truth becomes harder and harder to glean. It’s a dark and funny tale that is perfect for our own fact-challenged time. We think of the Antaeus community as a village, too (albeit a much healthier and vibrant one than windswept Inishmaan!) and a big change is coming our way: our Co-Artistic Director Rob Nagle will be stepping down from this position in February. It’s not possible to fully express the gigantic impact Rob’s leadership has had to Antaeus.

GOD ONLY KNOWS: FAMILY IN THE FILMS OF PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON A Thesis Presented to the Faculty Of The Lee Honors College at Western Michigan University By Jordan Rossio December 2013 Rossio 2 Gamblers, pornographers, motivational speakers, oilmen, cult leaders, and the dark side of Adam Sandler's comic persona. These are the topics that are explored by one of the greatest of the modern day American filmmakers, Paul Thomas Anderson. Through each of these unique and interesting film subjects, Anderson is able to explore the theme of family and the importance of the ones that we create for ourselves. From Sydney's diner conversation with John in Hard Eight up to the final goodbye between Lancaster Dodd and Freddie Quell in his most recent work The Master, Anderson's films have delved deep into this theme of family and how those surrogate families that people create can be more meaningful than the biological ones.

  • God Only Knows: Family in the Films of Paul Thomas Anderson
God Only Knows: Family in the Films of Paul Thomas Anderson An Honors Thesis by Jordan Rossio My Thesis • In his six film career, director Paul Thomas Anderson has made films which deal with the theme of family. All of Anderson’s films feature characters who are lonely or from broken home lives. These characters often come together to form surrogate families. These surrogate families give the characters the companionship and positive human connections that they desperately need. This is especially true of his first three, heavily personal films. My Motivation • When I came to Western Michigan University as a freshman, I was astounded by the amount of text and books related to the study of cinema in Waldo Library. • There were countless scholarly works on many of the major directors, yet I could not find any major works or essays written about Anderson, who is my personal favorite filmmaker. • I chose to do my thesis on Anderson because I feel that he has a unique and interesting voice that deserves to be academically studied just as much as some of the greats of filmmaking. My approach • I chose to look at the first three films directed by Anderson: – Hard Eight – Boogie Nights – Magnolia • These three films were intensely personal for Anderson • There is a quote by Anderson where he says that the first three films “reflected his life in small and intimate ways”, followed by there “is a lot of my dad in these movies” My research approach • Since Anderson is a relatively new director there is not a lot of major academic writing on him (compared to Hitchcock or even one of Anderson’s contemporaries Quentin Tarantino) • That is why I used interviews and personal comments by Anderson himself • These come mostly from newspaper and magazine interviews • One of the most useful tools for my research was the P.T.

The Straight Story, production by Walt Disney Pictures, distribution by Buena Vista Productions; The Bridges of Madison County, production by Amblin/Malpaso, distribution by Warner Bros; The Age of Innocence, pro- duction and distribution by Columbia Pictures; The Insider, production by Touchstone Pictures, distribution by Buena Vista. 2. Online and newspaper film reviews often provide such assertions about modern works. On The Last King of Scotland’s (Kevin Macdonald, 2006) depiction of Idi Amin, Chad Webb (2008) claims that ‘Despite its uncanny brutality, The Last King of Scotland is a severely intimate picture. Director Kevin Macdonald devises this tale in a way that impeccably displays the dictator’s development from enchanting to malicious’. Film critic of The Evening Standard Derek Malcolm (2008) praises Atonement ( Joe Wright, 2007) from a similar perspective, declaring that ‘[A]n intimate portrait of three intertwining lives is its ultimate triumph’. For a persuasive study of the viewer’s close relationships with people in film, see Murray Smith (1995) and Jens Eder (2006). 3. The source for The Insider is Marie Brenner (1996). One report on the factual origins of The Straight Story is provided by Martha P. Nochimson (2000). The source novels for the other two films are by Robert James Waller (1992) and Edith Wharton (1948). For a comparative account of book and film versions of The Bridges of Madison County see Richard Alleva (1995) and Walter Metz (1997). When mainland lobstermen brazenly stray into waters reserved for Islanders, threatening their already tenuous livelihood, Eben loses his temper. Dire consequences result and the fisherman is forced to leave the island. Ian McCrudden’s emotionally charged feature follows Eben upon his return home five years later. The community that Eben left has changed, and he is no longer wanted there; his presence opens old wounds that most would prefer to forget. But Eben is ill equipped and unwilling to start again somewhere else, and patiently begins trying to reestablish a claim to the only life he has ever known. Synopsis in Detail On a small fishing island off the coast of Maine, families have lived and worked off the sea for generations. Everyone knows each other. Birthright is akin to law and men inherit their fishing territories. Eben Cole, like the other fishermen, continues his family’s legacy of harvesting lobsters from the waters surrounding the island. Every year, the lobstermen’s catch gets smaller, thanks in no small part to the Mainlanders encroaching on the local claim.

The Best of the Whitesell Prize Competition 2006–2007 The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes for Expository Writing in General Education 4th Edition, Summer 2007 The Writing Center @ Franklin and Marshall College Lancaster, PA 17604-3003 717.291.3866 Preface The Writing Center’s Phyllis C. Whitesell Prizes honor excellent student writing in Franklin and Marshall’s General Education curriculum. Each year the Writing Center invites submissions and awards a prize for the best essay written in a course that fulfills the First-Year Writing Requirement and for the best essay from a Foundations course. This booklet contains the prize-winning and honorable mention essays from this year’s competition. Named for the emeritus Director of F&M’s Writing Center, the Whitesell Prizes serve several goals. In addition to honoring both Phyllis’s dedication to teaching writing and the achievements of the College’s students writers themselves, the Whitesell Prizes seek to add to the vitality of the College’s General Education curriculum by getting students to think of their intellectual efforts as ongoing enterprises (revision, often after the essay has been graded and the class is completed, is a requirement of the competition). Also, by involving faculty and Writing Center tutors in the judging of the essays—and by making this booklet available to the College community, the Whitesell competition hopes to foster a fuller awareness of the interesting work being done in our Foundations and First-Year Writing requirement courses. My great appreciation goes to this year’s Whitesell Prize judges. Prof. Christie Larochelle, Prof.

  • Inconsistent Cinema: Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood and the Postmodern Filmmaker
Inconsistent Cinema: Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood and the Postmodern Filmmaker BY KYLE BARRETT | University of Waikato, Aotearoa ABSTRACT Paul Thomas Anderson’s early work up to and includingThere Will Be Blood (2007) are examples of incoherent, postmodern cinema. Anderson’s formative years produced four critically acclaimed features, Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), and Punch-Drunk Love (2002), all of which presented related themes and aesthetics. ThoughThere Will Be Blood does depict a complex father-son relationship similar to that found in Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and Magnolia, the film is stylistically a radical departure for Anderson. While certain experimentation occurred inPunch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood is the start of the next phase of Anderson’s career, one which reflects a meditative sensibility. For instance, in place of kinetic cinematography, rapid cutting, and multiple narratives are longer takes, extended tracking shots, and a leisurely editing style. Finally, contextualizing Anderson’s career within the era of “Indiewood,” a fusion of studio and independent filmmaking, key visual techniques employed during his early work emphasize the shift in his aesthetics, high- lighting a singular, postmodern voice in Hollywood cinema. INTRODUCTION Fredric Jameson wrote that postmodernism is a concept this notion is applicable to Anderson’s filmography.
